This autoethnography tells my story as a French American woman who lives in the United States and worked with hundreds of school leaders in five African countries over a period of six years. Using a cultural proficiency continuum, I illustrate my learning and changing frames of references pertaining to cultural differences. Movement along the continuum indicates an alteration in thinking that progresses from marginalization to inclusivity. Many universities, however, seek National Science Foundation Institutional Transformation awards to change processes, procedures, and cultures to make science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) departments more inclusive. Undergraduate students’ cocurricular involvement and academic motivation have previously been shown to separately have a positive correlation with such outcomes. This correlational study aimed to investigate the relationship directly between undergraduate students’ academic motivation and cocurricular involvement. In this grounded theory study, qualitative data from 11 educators in six diocesan high schools in the New England region revealed an interrelated framework for lay educator faith formation. Dimensions of that framework include the educator’s relationship to the Church, interconnected processes of prayerful reflection and personal encounter, formative experiences with the lives of students, and formation in service as an outward expression of Catholic school identity.
