The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically changed the job requirements of school leaders and has negatively impacted the academic outcomes for students (Kuhfeld et al., 2020). As a result of the ongoing demands and stress caused by this pandemic, school leaders are at an increased risk for physical and mental health problems (Boyatzis & McKee, 2005; Brackett et al., 2018; Murphy, 2011; Sorenson, 2007) and, as a result, are less likely to continue in their profession long-term (Brackett et al., 2018; Farrace, 2020).

This project is an in-service professional development to prepare teachers for implementing effective strategies for raising minority test scores on standardized tests. These strategies focus on the development of vocabulary and on students’ self-efficacy. The literature shows that the failure for African American and minority students to be successful on standardized test is likely due to lack of support, resources, and adequate preparation. Furthermore, the literature reveals that most of these tests are probably biased toward these students’ cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. The purpose of this study was to better understand the relationship between novice teachers’ context-specific self-efficacies and stresses and whether these constructs differed from the self-efficacies and stresses of experienced teachers in middle school and early high school. Novice teachers, or teachers in their first 5 years of teaching, are most susceptible to attrition and turnover, which research indicated is sometimes brought on by stress. Research also showed self-efficacy consistently had a negative correlation to stress. There is a dearth of literature on how social work faculty manage controversial conversations in the classroom. This qualitative study addresses the deficit in the literature by using Deardorff’s (2008) Intercultural Competence model, the literature on the role faculty social identity plays during teaching, and the lived experiences of eight social work faculty at a four-year public research university. The four themes that emerged in this study’s findings are: 1) preparation, 2) interactions during discussions, 3) engagement, and 4) social identity. English language learner (ELL) students account for 19.6% of the Texas public school system (Texas Education Agency, 2019). National and state assessment data showed a learning gap between ELL students and their non-ELL counterparts, specifically in science (Texas Education Agency, 2017a; United States Department of Education, 2015). This qualitative study was conducted to examine how teachers of ELL students in a dual language program perceived the educational supports they received affected student achievement in science. The relationship between socio-economic status (SES) and achievement is well documented. While federal and state accountability systems have attempted to close achievement gaps for economically disadvantaged students, underlying neoliberal assumptions of fair evaluation through ranking lead to a disregard for this context. Within this framework, better measures of SES are needed, as current measures such as free- and reduced-price lunch (FRL) lack the nuance to distinguish between levels and aspects of poverty. Conventional language learning theory, which holds that learning outcomes are solely associated with learners’ competencies, has begun to be disputed in the dynamic learning environment. This study used English learners’ academic characteristics from the 2014 cohort in a private university in Shanghai, China, to explore the relationship between language learners’ academic characteristics and their learning outcomes in a national standardized English examination. Via the collection of extant data, 3,580 cases were included for logistic and multiple regression analysis.
