Teachers’ Perceptions On Effective Strategies To Retain Black Ninth-Grade Students, Jackie Lanette Mcfarland

The purpose of this qualitative narrative study was to examine teachers’ perceptions on effective strategies to retain Black ninth-grade students Data was collected from 10 ninth-grade teachers who have at least three years of teaching experience of ninth-graders. The ninth-grade teachers shared their experiences of working with Black ninth-grade students while reflecting and sharing their perceptions on strategies they have implemented to prevent these students from dropping out of school. The study was grounded in Critical Race Theory (CRT). Eight major themes emerged from the interviews: (1) Positive behavior interventions and supports (PBIS), (2) parent/community involvement, (3) student voice, (4) …

The purpose of this photovoice study was to better understand how the recent COVID-19 global health pandemic has professionally and emotionally impacted current school leadership. Educators faced varied challenges during this unprecedented time with a rapid shift from in-class to online or hybrid learning and often back and forth between both. The findings identified three overarching themes as major challenges faced by school leaders and professional school counselors during this pandemic: problem solving, emotional brutality, and exhaustion. The findings inform education stakeholders and policymakers about the experiences of educators in times of crisis, specifically during the recent global health pandemic. …

This content analysis aims to investigate the effectiveness of a job-embedded principal residency program in addressing special education needs within schools. By analyzing various sources such as action plans, participant reflections, and student outcomes, this research seeks to provide insights into the impact of the program on improving special education practices, fostering inclusive environments, and enhancing overall student achievement. The findings of this study have the potential to inform principal preparation programs, school administrators, and educators about the benefits and challenges of implementing best practices to support support students with special education students.

This research proposes a new model for Educational Leadership and Teacher Preparation Programs through a “Practitioner-Based Mentor-Teacher Candidate Model”, which is intended to be beneficial to both the aspiring school leader as the evaluator and mentor and the preservice teacher as the recipient of the feedback. With the shift to virtual and hybrid learning during the recent global health pandemic, methods to classroom observational-based supervision were challenged to adapt appropriately. The problem addressed in this study is the decline in the number of teachers in the field of education due to teacher attrition in the first five years of teaching. Teacher attrition can be caused by several factors. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the perceptions regarding overall preparedness of novice teachers in Arkansas. Ten Arkansas novice teachers were recruited. One-on-one interviews explored new teachers’ perceptions of self-efficacy in regards to classroom management, curriculum and instruction, and communication with families. Text-to-speech technology is a common accommodation available for students with disabilities. Despite the ubiquitous nature of text-to-speech, this technology has not been explored in laboratory settings for neurodiverse college students. This study explores the adaptability of laboratory accessible text-to-speech technology (originally developed for blind/low vision (B/LV) students) for neurodiverse students. Students were asked to provide general feedback about the usability and effectiveness of the technology using Likert surveys. The students also answered open-ended questions about how the technology could be adapted to be more neurodiverse friendly. While two-thirds of Black principals are female, the extant research on Black female principals is almost entirely qualitative. Using data from the 2017–2018 National Teacher and Principal Survey (n = 7,170 with 450 Black female principals) and the 2011–2012 Schools and Staffing Survey (n = 7,510, with 360 Black female principals), we quantitatively examine the career paths, reported influence, and reported time use of Black female principals compared to other principals. Black female principals are relatively less likely than Black male principals to have experience as athletic coaches, and less likely to have non-education management experience. Relative to …

What opportunities and challenges arise when an equity-focused educational organization aims to support employee’s individual equity practices while simultaneously developing the organization’s equity practice? In this study, employees of a non-profit educational organization were asked what rationales and expectations played a role in their decision to volunteer in an equity working group. Their responses were used to understand whether Perry’s (2000) process theory of Public Service Motivation helped describe their decision. This quantitative correlational study investigated the potential impact of technostress on rural high school teacher burnout. The purpose of this study was to determine the possible correlations between the five techno-stressors that make up technostress and the burnout experienced by rural Arkansas high school teachers. The person-environment fit theory was the guiding framework for this study, which states that stress is a result of the interaction between a person and their environment. This research focuses on the history of one small nursery school to analyze the factors that influenced the school: the labor unionists founders, the changing neighborhoods of the Bronx, the Progressive Education Movement and the Women's Leadership Movements that helped define and support the school. Recent policy changes have had impact on this school and on all early childhood programs in New York City.

The problem that was addressed in this study is that lockdown drills are regularly being conducted at public high schools, but it was not known how teachers perceive their role in safety and emergency preparedness, which is important to teachers’ sense of security.
