Inspire-On: Stereotype Threat Taught As A Motivation For College/Success, Benjamin Concepcion, Coral Maack
Inspire-On: Stereotype Threat Taught As A Motivation For College/Success, Benjamin Concepcion, Coral Maack
Senior Honors Projects
Stereotype threat refers to being at risk of confirming, as self-characteristic, a negative stereotype about one’s group (Steele & Aronson, 1995). Stereotype threat is the idea that a person from a stereotyped identity needs to conform to stereotyped behaviors of their identity group. The identities one holds may hinder or enhance performance in many aspects of life.
According to Collegeboard.org, “The gap between earning the opportunity and seizing it is most pronounced among traditionally underserved minority populations. For example, only 3 out of 10 African-American students with high potential for success in AP science course work take an AP science …

Passion And Purpose In Advocacy: Portraits Of Educational Leaders, Maureen D. Brown
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
As the public education system becomes more diverse, voices of advocates who positively support students and optimize student outcomes are essential. This qualitative multicase case study focused on the perspectives of five educational leaders who advocated in a public school district in Texas. A brief overview of historic voices in education advocacy gave way to the advocacy-based voices heard from educators, school counselors, and principals. Answering the central research question of how educational leaders maintain their passion for advocacy while overcoming obstacles related to change, each participant shared the personal experiences that paved the way for a passion in advocacy. …

The Relationship Between Reading Fluency And Lexile Measures, Joshua Purvis
The Relationship Between Reading Fluency And Lexile Measures, Joshua Purvis
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
With increasing emphasis being placed on teachers to show an improvement in student achievement, schools are relying on indicators such as reading fluency and reading comprehension to gauge student progress throughout the year. Since the growth on these assessments are used in calculating teachers and administrators’ yearly job evaluations, the significance of these measures has never been higher. Teachers and administrators want to know if the time spent on measures such as reading fluency is worth the sacrifice in the instructional day, when this time could be spent on teaching state mandated standards. The purpose of this quantitative non-experimental correlational …

Lived History Of A Transformative Leader With A Disability: An Evocative Autoethnography For Social Justice, Sofia Vergara
Lived History Of A Transformative Leader With A Disability: An Evocative Autoethnography For Social Justice, Sofia Vergara
LMU Theses and Dissertations
Despite legal advancements recognizing the rights of individuals with disabilities, societal barriers are still arising from the medical model of disability. These obstacles have resulted in marginalizing and isolating practices, in turn leading to the underrepresentation of individuals with disabilities in the workforce and, by extension, in leadership positions.
Grounded in the frameworks of critical pedagogy and critical disability studies, this autoethnographic study examines, using my personal experiences as contextual evidence, the determining factors underlying the struggle for equity and leadership, within the hegemonic society that people with disabilities must navigate. The study further explores the issue of empowerment and …

The purpose of this qualitative research study is to describe which methods and strategies can help to improve students’ achievement in mathematics in under resourced urban middle schools. The significance of this study is to develop math instructional skills in urban schools that can help bridge the achievement gap between urban underperforming schools and suburban achieving schools. Urban mathematics educators are content-ready and state-certified, but they lack certain key techniques and strategies that will help teachers succeed and students learn effectively and efficiently. Two questions were answered in this survey: in answer to the first question, the educators characterized conceptual …

High Schools Implementing Bring Your Own Technology: A Phenomenological Study Of Classroom Teachers' Perspectives, Allison Hurston
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Despite the increased unfolding of new Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) initiatives, confusion exists regarding the defining characteristics of a BYOT classroom. Using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study was to investigate how teachers at three different high schools in a southeastern U.S. state define, plan, and implement BYOT within their classrooms. The study took place in a southeastern U.S. state and included 10 BYOT teachers. It was designed to answer four research questions: (a) What are BYOT teachers’ definitions and descriptions of BYOT? (b) What planning and implementation strategies do BYOT teachers …

Effect Of Previous Role And Experience On Principals' Self-Reported Behaviors, Kiffany Pride
Effect Of Previous Role And Experience On Principals' Self-Reported Behaviors, Kiffany Pride
College of Education Dissertations
Leading schools in the 21st Century is not a straightforward matter. Principals are responsible for the bifurcated role of managing and leading instruction in schools. However, many administrators lack the requisite skills to be instructional leaders. There are no national or state mandates designating a continuum of previous roles and experiences essential to being an effective principal. Despite the immense pressure for principals to cultivate effective learning cultures, there is limited research linking principals’ effectiveness or the lack thereof to the progression of their career path. Therefore, this research study was designed to add to the diminutive body of research …

A Universal Design For Robotics Education, Mustafa Şahin Bülbül
A Universal Design For Robotics Education, Mustafa Şahin Bülbül
Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities
In this century technological and educational needs increase drastically. Out of local language, educators need to teach robotic language and use necessary technologies to design robots like Arduino set. This set let users to know less code/computer language and knowledge about electronics. Users may develop their own robots with this set. It also improves design and implementation skills. However, it is not a suitable design for blinds. Universal design approach suggests educators to design courses in a way to meet the needs of all participants. By this approach, learning environments are helpful and useful for participants with special needs. With …

Lincoln’S Legacy And A New Generation Of Leadership, Janet M. Riggs
Lincoln’S Legacy And A New Generation Of Leadership, Janet M. Riggs
From the Desk of President Riggs
One hundred fifty-three years ago our nation was adrift, embroiled in a civil war and grappling with questions about our future. Many had lost hope. In November of 1863 here at Gettysburg, President Abraham Lincoln called upon our nation to rededicate itself to the unfinished work before us—the work of equality, the fulfillment of our democracy, a new birth of freedom. Is Pre-Kindergarten An Educational Panacea? A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Of Scaled-Up Pre-Kindergarten In The United States, Corey A. Deangelis, Heidi Holmes Erickson, Gary W. Ritter
Education Reform Faculty and Graduate Students Publications
We synthesize the existing research and compute meta-analytic averages for the effects of scaled-up, publicly funded pre-kindergarten (pre-K) programs on student pre-kindergarten achievement in math and reading. Other systematic reviews of pre-K programs have focused on the effects for specific groups of students from various types of pre-K programs. We add to the literature by focusing on scaled-up pre-K often provided at the state level, which is of growing policy interest. Scaled-up programs are large state or district run programs that are available to a large portion of children before they enter kindergarten. We limit our analysis to state and …

Mentoring Graduate Students Through The Action Research Journey Using Guiding Principles, Sarina Chugani Molina, Joi A. Spencer
School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship
Our department has adopted action research (AR) projects as the culminating task for our master's degree candidates. This paper presents our work on mentoring our graduate students towards the completion of their final AR research projects and details the deliberate structures we have put in place to guide them through the AR process. These structures include a fullsemester course, individual meetings with an AR Chair, and collaborative facultystudent feedback sessions. These collaborative conversations (between students and faculty) have allowed us to clarify our understandings (as a department) of AR, set standards and goals for AR, and raise our expectations on …
