Using An Art Therapy Assessment To Screen For Barriers To Learning In The Primary Grades, Carol Ann Beeman
Using An Art Therapy Assessment To Screen For Barriers To Learning In The Primary Grades, Carol Ann Beeman
Theses and Dissertations
The study examined the use of an art-based, art therapy assessment and accompanying survey to test construct validity of the survey instrument, reliability, and effectiveness as a screening tool in the primary grades, K-2, in a public school, a private, parochial school, and with a comparison group of already identified special education students in another parochial school. The goal was to identify children who may need evaluation or intervention to promote success in the learning environment. Art is a simple, natural way to discover mental functioning through the expressive nature of experience and its underlying physiological and psychological processes. The …

Academic And Social Aspects Of Recent Immigrant Children's School Experiences In A Public Elementary School In A U.S.- Mexico Border Town In South Texas, Alicia Judith Bolt
Academic And Social Aspects Of Recent Immigrant Children's School Experiences In A Public Elementary School In A U.S.- Mexico Border Town In South Texas, Alicia Judith Bolt
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
In this study I examined school experiences of recent immigrant students who came to the Ollin South elementary school in Texas, U.S., with prior schooling in Yolitzli, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Using an ethnographic perspective, I analyzed how children and their parents and teachers described children's schooling experiences, challenges, and transition processes. I conducted semi-structured and open-ended interviews with ten students enrolled in 1st through 5th grade in a public elementary school in Ollin, Texas. I also interviewed the parents and teachers of the students to gain a broader perspective of student experiences and schooling processes on both sides of the border. …

Cultural And Linguistic Capital In Early Years Education And Care, Maire Mhic Mhathuna
Cultural And Linguistic Capital In Early Years Education And Care, Maire Mhic Mhathuna
Conference papers
This paper discusses the concept of cultural and linguistic capital in relation to early years education and care (EECE) in Ireland. Bourdieu describes cultural capital as a form of symbolic capital or non-economic asset. Linguistic capital is a subset of cultural capital and refers to linguistic competence and control of linguistic resources. At a time of great change in ECCE it is appropriate to consider the cultural references on which early childhood education and care in Ireland is premised. What is distinctly Irish about ECEC in Ireland? How do we develop an inclusive viewpoint that values the totality of our …

This paper discusses the importance of music in Early Childhood classrooms. It is meant to be a resource for the classroom intended to be used by teachers, however; it can also be used by families and caregivers who want to add more music in to their homes. The songs are organized to follow a typical daily schedule in a classroom. The readers do not need background knowledge of music and can make up their own tunes to most of the songs provided. I have suggested the music to go along with most of the songs however other melodies could work …

Bringing Together Mind And Heart In The Classroom: An Independent Study, Allison Fisch
Graduate Student Independent Studies
The purpose of this thesis is to address the brain research indicating the importance of teaching social and emotional learning and mindfulness within the classroom. Studies denote the possible emotional and social disorders that can stem from a lack of social and emotional awareness. Educators and administrators are provided with activities and techniques that can be adapted into the curriculum with ease. The· activities and techniques reinforce the child's ability to recognize their emotions and gain resilience as well as aiding in their empathy for others. Research supports the concept of mindfulness and how it can be successful in the …

Parents' Access To Information And Ability To Advocate For Their Young Children With Disabilities, Ellen W. Fisher
Parents' Access To Information And Ability To Advocate For Their Young Children With Disabilities, Ellen W. Fisher
Graduate Student Independent Studies
This study was motivated by the fact that there is an overrepresentation of children from minority backgrounds with disabilities in the United States school system (Artiles & Trent, 1994; Cartledge, 1999; Chinn & Hughes, 1987). In considering factors causing the inequality in the special education system, this study explored (a.) parents' access to information regarding the preschool special education system and (b.) how that access to information affects parents' ability to advocate on behalf of their young children with disabilities. Through twelve anonymous surveys and six interviews with parents, information was collected regarding who has and does not have access …
The First Child In A Chinese Family Who Could Read Prior To Entry Into Elementary School: A Qualitative Intrinsic Case Study, Shu Ping Zhang
The First Child In A Chinese Family Who Could Read Prior To Entry Into Elementary School: A Qualitative Intrinsic Case Study, Shu Ping Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study is an account of the literacy-related human environment a Chinese girl experienced as the first person in the history of her family who was able to read prior to entry into elementary school. Temporally speaking, the study spanned more than a decade from the initial, tentative research question to the formal, primary research question. Spatially speaking, it crossed three cultures: the Chinese, Korean, and American cultures. The study was inspired by the Zero Project in China, known as the "Project of Quality Education and Implementation for Children Aged Zero (fetus) to Six." The significance of the content issue …
Preschool Participation And Linguistically Diverse Learners' English Language And Literacy Acquisition, Tara Szabo Maxson
Preschool Participation And Linguistically Diverse Learners' English Language And Literacy Acquisition, Tara Szabo Maxson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Linguistically diverse learners are a rapidly growing subpopulation of the students currently served by schools and future forecasts indicate that population growth is expected to continue. Students who enter school speaking a language other than English need adequate time and opportunity to English. Furthermore, children who attain grade-level literacy by the third grade demonstrate greater achievement in school and life. Because language and literacy acquisition in the early elementary years leads to later success and English language learners (ELLs) need time and opportunity to master both, it is imperative that school systems focus on interventions to ensure both early and …
Some Girls Play With Trains: Negotiating Gender In A Preschool Classroom, Laura Zellerbach
Some Girls Play With Trains: Negotiating Gender In A Preschool Classroom, Laura Zellerbach
Graduate Student Independent Studies
This study examines children's understanding of gender roles within a classroom of three and four-year-olds. Discussions of gender in the classroom were recorded and transcribed over a four month period. In January, children were presented with "The Boys and Girls Book, " a book that discussed gender norms in the language of "Some girls play with trains/ Some boys play with trains." Common themes emerged, including gender-typed play, hair and clothing as signifiers of gender, marketing and material goods as related to gender roles, and the use of conventional and unconventional gender stereotypes. These children's changing understandings and rationales concerning …

The Postmodern Curriculum: Making Space For Historically And Politically Situated Understandings, Veronica Pacini-Ketchabaw, Alan Pence
Education Publications
By engaging poststructural, postmodern and indigenous lenses, this article explores challenges associated with recently developed 'postmodern' early childhood education curricula. The authors propose that curricula should not be seen as neutral, but rather as historically and politically situated documents that require dynamic and critical engagements from educators. We situate our analysis within Canada.

Nomadic Research Practices In Early Childhood: Interrupting Racisms And Colonialisms, Veronica Pacini-Ketchabaw, Fikile Nxumalo, Carol Rowan
Education Publications
This paper considers how research practices on racialization in early childhood education might be reconceptualized when racialization is placed within relational intricacies and affects in multiple encounters. By foregrounding race and its emergence in multifarious, unpredictable ways in everyday encounters between human and non-human bodies, space, and discourse, the paper investigates how a movement toward research analyses that engage with both the materiality of race and its systemic and discursive formations might be used to constantly seek new ethical ways of responding to and acting against racisms and colonialism in early childhood.

Work And Mexican American Parent-Adolescent Relationships: The Mediating Role Of Parent Well-Being, Lorey A. Wheeler, Kimberly A. Updegraff
Work And Mexican American Parent-Adolescent Relationships: The Mediating Role Of Parent Well-Being, Lorey A. Wheeler, Kimberly A. Updegraff
Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications
This study of Mexican American two-parent families (N = 246) examined the role of parents’ well-being (i.e., depressive symptoms, role overload) as a potential mechanism through which parent occupational conditions (i.e., self-direction, hazardous conditions, physical activity, work pressure) are linked to parent-adolescent relationship qualities (i.e., warmth, conflict, disclosure). Depressive symptoms mediated the links between maternal and paternal work pressure and parentadolescent warmth, conflict, and disclosure. For mothers, depressive symptoms also mediated the links between self-direction and mother-adolescent warmth, conflict, and disclosure; for fathers, role overload mediated the links between work pressure and hazardous conditions with fatheradolescent warmth.

Principal And Teacher Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, Carolyn Spears Daugherty
Ed.D. Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the effectiveness of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP) and to provide an annotated bibliography of professional literature related to bullying for professional educators. The OBPP used a whole school approach and taught common vocabulary to define the word bullying. Bullying rose to front-page news in recent years and the events led to injuries, death, and even suicide. Long-term effects were severe and included self-esteem issues. The OBPP was one of the better-known programs; however, there were contradictory reports on its effectiveness. This mixed methods study gauged teacher and principal perceptions of …

Theses and Dissertations in Early Childhood Education
The purpose of this study was to utilize Baumrind's parenting style construct, with early childhood educators, as classroom management styles by assessing the proportion of classroom management styles of Virginia Association of Early Childhood Education (VAECE) educators, and secondly to assess classroom management beliefs and practices of among urban kindergarten teachers in addition to examining whether those differing classroom management styles impacted students' social and academic skills. The study investigated the proportion of classroom management styles of VAECE educators using an online questionnaire and used a case study approach with nine kindergarten teachers to better understand the teachers' classroom management …
Respect For Me But Not For Thee: Reflections On The Impact Of Same-Sex Marriage On Education, Charles J. Russo
Respect For Me But Not For Thee: Reflections On The Impact Of Same-Sex Marriage On Education, Charles J. Russo
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
Examples of the ramifications of same-sex marriage in education are beginning to emerge whether in K-12 public or non-public schools or higher education. In K-12 schools, controversies have surfaced over whether school officials can use gay friendly curricular material for young children, 15 whether religiously affiliated non-public schools are obligated to enroll children who are being raised by couples in same-sex unions, 16 and whether students can bring same-sex dates to proms. 17 In like manner, disputes have arisen in higher education, particularly in the context of graduate counseling programs where two students unsuccessfully challenged their dismissals for professing their …
Investing In Kids: Early Childhood Programs And Local Economic Development, Timothy J. Bartik
Investing In Kids: Early Childhood Programs And Local Economic Development, Timothy J. Bartik
Upjohn Press
Early childhood programs, if designed correctly, pay big economic dividends down the road because they increase the skills of their participants. And since many of those participants will remain in the same state or local area as adults, the local economy benefits: more persons with better skills attract business, which provides more and better jobs for the local economy. Bartik measures ratios of local economic development benefits to costs for both early childhood education and business incentives. He shows that early childhood programs and the best-designed business incentives can provide local benefits that significantly exceed costs. Given this, states and …

Bridging Culture, Research, And Practice In Early Childhood Development: The Madrasa Resource Centers In East Africa, Peter Mwaura, Kofi Marfo
Institute for Human Development, East Africa
The Madrasa Resource Centers in East Africa have adapted features of Euro-American theory and practice into a service delivery system responding to local cultural and socioeconomic realities. After 25 years of implementation in predominantly Muslim communities with high poverty and low literacy rates, the program could serve as a model for other parts of the continent with similar population profiles. This article examines some of the program’s key features and discusses the prospects that the program’s integration of research into service delivery holds for developmental research in the region. It proposes that university partnerships with such programs could yield productive …
