The Importance Of School District Quality In The Columbus Real Estate Market, Ryan Karapas

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects

Using a random sample of 100 houses sold between the months of October 2018 and January 2019 in the greater Columbus, Ohio area, this paper investigates the relationship between school district quality and the selling price of houses. The results show that school district quality has a positive and statistically significant influence on the Columbus real estate market. An increase of one letter grade in school district quality (calculated using output-related factors such as student performance) leads to a 13% increase in the selling price of a house. When using the average house price in my data set of $254,000, …

Strategic Audit Of Proxibid, Maxim Van Klinken

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Proxibid is a platform for connecting buyers and sellers of high-value items. As part of their continued growth, they are running into issues with the categorization of their goods into their hierarchy since the classification of these items is becoming a monumental task that will become unreasonable for humans to do. They have dedicated employees to manually classify well over 10,000 incoming items into over 2000 categories every week. The bulk of those items come in the later half of the work week. This paper will focus on how to tackle this problem while remaining competitive and preventing future growth …

The Unfree Space Of Play: Emergence And Control In The Videogame And The Platform, Logan Brown Mar 2019

The Unfree Space Of Play: Emergence And Control In The Videogame And The Platform, Logan Brown

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

This article attempts to understand the economic and informatic ramifications of the convergence between increasingly connective games and massive online platforms by considering recent trends in both that center around designing for emergence. Scholarship on emergence as a property of games overwhelmingly treats emergent design as a liberating force that privileges player agency in a virtual space. Yet, as games fuse with surrounding platform ecosystems like Steam, Facebook, and Google, those emergent behaviors are subject to vast systems of inscription that analyze user behavior in order to reshape the free space of emergence and extract greater social and financial capital. …

Dos And Don'ts Of Data Science, Ryan Burton

SDSU Data Science Symposium

In an ideal world, we avoid all mistakes in our work. Some mistakes are preventable and others are unavoidable. A few common mistakes in data science that can be minimized include assuming correlation implies causation, modeling with an unrepresentative sample, and focusing on the mean without understanding the distribution. This talk will give an overview of some of the simple yet common mistakes in data science and guidance on how to avoid them.

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Participatory Modeling (PM) is becoming increasingly common in environmental planning and conservation, due in part to advances in cyberinfrastructure as well as to greater recognition of the importance of engaging a diverse array of stakeholders in decision making. We provide lessons learned, based on over 200 years of the authors’ cumulative and diverse experience, about PM processes. These include successful and, perhaps more importantly, not-so-successful trials. Our collective interdisciplinary background has supported the development, testing, and evaluation of a rich range of collaborative modeling approaches. We share here what we have learned as a community of participatory modelers, within three …

A Product Affinity Segmentation Framework, Lili Zhang, Jennifer Priestley, Joseph Demaio, Sherry Ni Feb 2019

A Product Affinity Segmentation Framework, Lili Zhang, Jennifer Priestley, Joseph Demaio, Sherry Ni

Published and Grey Literature from PhD Candidates

Product affinity segmentation discovers the linking between customers and products for cross-selling and promotion opportunities to increase sales and profits. However, there are some challenges with conventional approaches. The most straightforward approach is to use the product-level data for customer segmentation, but it results in less meaningful solutions. Moreover, customer segmentation becomes challenging on massive datasets due to computational complexity of traditional clustering methods. As an alternative, market basket analysis may suffer from association rules too general to be relevant for important segments. In this paper, we propose to partition customers and discover associated products simultaneously by detecting communities in …

Regional Integration, Multinational Enterprise Strategy And The Impact Of Country‐Level Risk: The Case Of The Emu, Jenny Hillemann, Alain Verbeke, Won-Yong Oh Jan 2019

Regional Integration, Multinational Enterprise Strategy And The Impact Of Country‐Level Risk: The Case Of The Emu, Jenny Hillemann, Alain Verbeke, Won-Yong Oh

Management, Entrepreneurship and Technology Faculty Research

The European Monetary Union (EMU) provides a new macro‐level, institutional setting for multinational enterprises (MNEs). The authors investigate the impact of regional integration on MNE strategy by analysing Belgian firms’ entry‐mode choices in foreign markets, both EMU and non‐EMU ones, with a focus on what impact remains of country‐level risk. They demonstrate that regional integration has altered the impact of country‐level institutional risk on MNE entry‐mode choices inside the EMU. The conventional predictions of international business theory have been reversed, with higher country‐level risk inside the EMU driving a preference for wholly owned subsidiaries. Within the integrated region, insider firms …

Improving Vix Futures Forecasts Using Machine Learning Methods, James Hosker, Slobodan Djurdjevic, Hieu Nguyen, Robert Slater

SMU Data Science Review

The problem of forecasting market volatility is a difficult task for most fund managers. Volatility forecasts are used for risk management, alpha (risk) trading, and the reduction of trading friction. Improving the forecasts of future market volatility assists fund managers in adding or reducing risk in their portfolios as well as in increasing hedges to protect their portfolios in anticipation of a market sell-off event. Our analysis compares three existing financial models that forecast future market volatility using the Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index (VIX) to six machine/deep learning supervised regression methods. This analysis determines which models provide best …

Ample Provision: A Preliminary Study Relating Budget Composition And High School Graduation Rates In Select Washington State Public School Districts, Gregory P. Gadow Jan 2019

Ample Provision: A Preliminary Study Relating Budget Composition And High School Graduation Rates In Select Washington State Public School Districts, Gregory P. Gadow

All Undergraduate Projects

How to allocate scarce resources for an optimal outcome is of keen interest to those who set the budgets in public education. Simply throwing money at schools is not enough; it is important that money is spent where it will do the most good. This study considers Washington State public school districts and examines how the share of per-student expenditures in seven budget categories relates to on-time high school graduation rates. It is an investigative study, exploring whether there is enough evidence to merit further, more in-depth research. Using budget and graduation information from academic years 1997-98 through 2016-17 for …

From Photoshop® To Photoshop: Knowing How And When To Protect Your Brand Name, Joseph M. Dery

2019

Forbes Magazine's 2018 publication of "the World's Most Valuable Brands" illustrates a dramatic statistic: of their 100 top ranked brands, each had an estimated brand value of over $7B! In the US, however, the very legislation that protects brands from dilution also contains language on how to cancel a trademark that has become generic. This phenomenon is known as Brand Genericide. To best equip marketers with the ability to strategically influence this phenomenon, I offer an explanation as to "why" it exists, a detailed a methodology for tracing it, a series of strategic interventions for influencing it, and a …

Land Art : True Capitalist Art, Annie Gustafsson Jan 2019

Land Art : True Capitalist Art, Annie Gustafsson

MA Theses

Land art is known to exist in remote locations, are immense in scale, are site specific and are incredibly costly to create. All of these traits make Land artworks inherently resistant to conservation and the secondary market.

If these artworks do not present an obvious investment opportunity, how then can an art movement like Land art even exist? What is its role in a capitalist driven society, if it cannot perform as a financial asset? Where then does the value in Land art lie?

This paper will attempt to explore the cultural effects on the movement, the subsequent methodologies developed …

The Demand For Women Who Painted: Recent Art Market Trends For Female Artists Of The Premodern Era, Cristina Demiany Jan 2019

The Demand For Women Who Painted: Recent Art Market Trends For Female Artists Of The Premodern Era, Cristina Demiany

MA Theses

A number of events highlighting female artists who lived and worked before the year 1900 are currently appearing in the art world. In consideration of this expanding cultural activity, this paper explores recent art market behavior around premodern female painters by examining sales of their work at auction between the years 1998 and 2019. The larger questions around such an analysis include assessing if the work of premodern female artists presents a new investment opportunity for collectors, and if it could also provide a means of invigorating the Old Master market. Three case studies representing female artists from different locations, …
