An Integrated Vendor-Buyer Cooperative Inventory Model For Items With Imperfect Quality And Shortage Backordering, Jia-Tzer Hsu, Lie-Fern Hsu
An Integrated Vendor-Buyer Cooperative Inventory Model For Items With Imperfect Quality And Shortage Backordering, Jia-Tzer Hsu, Lie-Fern Hsu
Publications and Research
We develop a model to determine an integrated vendor-buyer inventory policy for items with imperfect quality and planned back orders. The production process is imperfect and produces a certain number of defective items with a known probability density function. The vendor delivers the items to the buyer in small lots of equally sized shipments. Upon receipt of the items, the buyer will conduct a 100% inspection. Since each lot contains a variable number of defective items, shortages may occur at the buyer. We assume that shortages are permitted and are completely back ordered. The objective is to minimize the total …

Global Warming, Extreme Weather Events, And Forecasting Tropical Cyclones: A Market-Based Forward-Looking Approach, Carolyn W. Chang, Jack S. K. Chang, Kian Guan Lim
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Global warming has more than doubled the likelihood of extreme weather events, e.g. the 2003 European heat wave, the growing intensity of rain and snow in the Northern Hemisphere, and the increasing risk of flooding in the United Kingdom. It has also induced an increasing number of deadly tropical cyclones with a continuing trend. Many individual meteorological dynamic simulations and statistical models are available for forecasting hurricanes but they neither forecast well hurricane intensity nor produce clear-cut consensus. We develop a novel hurricane forecasting model by straddling two seemingly unrelated disciplines — physical science and finance — based on the …

Responding To State Sales Tax Laws For Online Retailers - A Case Study Of Amazon And The States, Ross Malaga
Responding To State Sales Tax Laws For Online Retailers - A Case Study Of Amazon And The States, Ross Malaga
Department of Information Management and Business Analytics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
As state budgets have come under increasing pressure, many states have enacted so called "Amazon taxes" that seek to have large online retailers collect state sales tax. States are attempting to expand the concept of nexus to include marketing affiliates and corporate subsidiaries. Amazon and other large retailers have reacted in different ways depending on the state and the specific legislation. This paper discusses the potential impact of these new laws and how both states and online retailers have dealt with the issues involved.

The volatility in today’s financial markets creates challenges but also great opportunities for mergers and acquisitions (M&A). In uncertain times, there is a need to play it safe, but for some it is also the ideal time to seize opportunities to make great deals. As companies find distinctive ways to strategically navigate in these turbulent times, many continue to use a two-fold strategy: cut costs and stimulate growth through diversification, which includes M&A. Global M&A activity increased in 2010 and continues to increase in 2011. In this article, we report on Global M&A activity in the first half of 2011, …
