Cyclones And Vortices: Alejo Carpentier's Reasons Of State As Cartesian Discourse, Joseph F. O'Neill Jan 1978

Cyclones And Vortices: Alejo Carpentier's Reasons Of State As Cartesian Discourse, Joseph F. O'Neill

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Alejo Carpentier's Reasons of State is a reconstruction of Cartesian discourse that is paradoxically both fantastic and baroque in its implications. Building upon the assumption that Cartesianism is typically baroque and therefore a dynamism, rather than a dichotomy of subject and object, the novel proceeds in the form of a retrospective deathbed narrative to suggest the radically anti-Cartesian polarization of subject and object in fin de siècle Latin America by portraying its dictator/narrator as a man whose world-view, like his culture's, is schizophrenically divided between magical realism and positivist progressivism. This ambiguous narrative perception is comparable to that of the …

Fernando Arrabal's "Ars Amandi": The Theme Of Love In Selected Plays, Peter L. Podol Sep 1977

Fernando Arrabal's "Ars Amandi": The Theme Of Love In Selected Plays, Peter L. Podol

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The evolution in Arrabal's treatment of the theme of love reflects both the development and enrichment of his dramatic techniques and the resolution of his own deep-seated psychological conflicts. Arrabal's theater utilizes his concept of dramatic ceremony to project his intense desire for personal, political and artistic liberation. Psychological and social forces combine to frustrate the fulfillment of love in his early theater (Fando and Lis, 1956) but ultimately love functions to obviate both internal and external constraints. Sexual union, which receives its most rapturous affirmation in Arrabal's plays written during the late 1960's (The Law of …

Points South: Ambrose Bierce, Jorge Luis Borges, And The Fantastic, Howard M. Fraser Jan 1977

Points South: Ambrose Bierce, Jorge Luis Borges, And The Fantastic, Howard M. Fraser

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

The debt of Borges's "A Secret Miracle" to Ambrose Bierce's "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" both in theme and technique has been noted in recent criticism. However, a careful study of the two works reveals striking differences, particularly with respect to the treatment of time. Based on Todorov's study of the fantastic, this article attempts to show how Bierce's influence on Borges parallels the general development of psychological realism and its transformation into surrealism. While it is true that the allusive qualities of Borges' work recall thematic and technical aspects of Bierce, nonetheless the American Hispanophile is a precursor …

The Prose Poem At The Outset Of The Modernist Period In Latin America, Jesse Fernández Jan 1977

The Prose Poem At The Outset Of The Modernist Period In Latin America, Jesse Fernández

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The main purpose of the study is to trace the beginnings of the "prose poem" in the works of the first generation of modernist writers in Latin American letters. The origins of the new literary genre, conceived as such by its authors, go back to the nineteenth century in France, where several writers experimented with a kind of "poetic prose" that was to culminate around the middle of the century in the works of Aloysius Bertrand and Charles Baudelaire.

It became necessary, therefore, to dedicate the entire first chapter to examine the more influential French authors of the period, as …

Miguel Delibes' Parábola Del Náufrago: Utopia Redreamed, H. L. Boudreau Jan 1976

Miguel Delibes' Parábola Del Náufrago: Utopia Redreamed, H. L. Boudreau

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

Delibes' anti-utopian novel is analyzed from a triple perspective: its internal exegesis, the author's literary development, and the three-phase Utopian genre. Artistic versus thematic orientation is examined via parabolic technique, linguistic characterization, and Parábola's internalization as its author's nightmare. The latter facilitates novelistic exposition through the control and order inherent in the associative language and logic of the dream. Delibes frees his Utopian world from the perquisites of reality by creating an estetic dimension and psychological verisimilitude uncommon in the genre.

The Orderly Chaos Of Camilo José́ Cela, Christian William Hearon Jul 1972

The Orderly Chaos Of Camilo José́ Cela, Christian William Hearon

Master's Theses

Camilo José Cela, a philosopher and a consummate artist, has produced a series of works which individually and as a group, are a careful combination of idea and form. One work cannot adequately be understood unless it is also seen in context with Cela's other works. Each of the novels, short stories, essays and travel books, is united to the others by Cela' s overall existential philosophical outlook, and each rests on and at the same time illuminates the others.

An Annotated Critical Edition Of También Tiene El Sol Menguante By Luis Vélez De Guevara And Francisco De Rojas Zorrilla, James Stone Rambo

Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs

También tiene el sol menguante is a refundición of Mira de Amescua's two-part drama, La próspera y la adversa fortuna de don Bernardo de Cabrera, concerning the famous fourteenth-century favorite of Pedro IV of Aragon. The purpose of this dissertation is to provide a clear text of the play, along with thorough textual notes.

There are four extant versions of the play in question: 1) a handwritten, censored manuscript whose censures are dated 1655, 2) a printed version from a collection published in 1666, 3) a handwritten manuscript of the eighteenth century (probably dating from before 1735), and 4) …

Análisis De Formas Interiores Y Exteriores De La Novela El Día Señalado De Manuel Mejía Vallejo, Elisa Dávila.A Jan 1972

Análisis De Formas Interiores Y Exteriores De La Novela El Día Señalado De Manuel Mejía Vallejo, Elisa Dávila.A

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

A Study Of Image, Symbol, And Theme In La Casa De Bernarda Alba, Iris Scribner Bird

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The tragedy, La casa de Bernarda Alba, by Federico Garcia Lorca is generally recognized as one of the finest poetic tragedies of the Twentieth Century, yet it has not drawn the critical attention afforded the plays of Lorca's contemporaries, such as 'Tennessee Williams, for example. Ironically, Williams' early plays evince a definite. Lorquian influence. Close attention has been paid to the poetic texture of.Williams plays, providing an important contribution to understanding the art of his poetic tragedy. The same has not been true of Lorca. This may he due partly to the fact that Lorca's ·tragedies have not played very …

A Comparison Of The Heroines In Three Representative Novels Of Concha Espina, Barbara Harris Dennis Aug 1970

A Comparison Of The Heroines In Three Representative Novels Of Concha Espina, Barbara Harris Dennis

Masters Theses

It has been the intent of this study to present a closely referenced comparison of the heroines of three representative novels by Concha Espina.

Through the use of developmental analyses and plot summaries of La esfinge maragata, El metal de los muertos and El Caliz rojo it has been possible to obtain a valid assessment of the similarities and contrasts found in the respective protagonists. In spite of the obvious differences in environmental, social and circumstantial elements, the three women evidence essentially the same basic personality traits, attitudes and reactions.

The personal tragedy in the lives of the three women …

The Dominative Woman & Blasco Ibáňez, Joseph Mills

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Although certain critics have mentioned Blasco Ibáñez’s women characters in their writings, they often relegate these persons to a subordinate role relevant to the development of the plot and of the philosophy of the author. Many of the earlier critics have mentioned the importance of the setting in Blasco Ibáñez’s novels, as did James O. Swain when he wrote in 1935, “Especially in his Valencian novels, Arroz y Tartana, Flor de Mayo, La barraca, and Cañas y barro, does the setting play an important role.” As recently as 1961, Sherman Eoff has pointed out how characterization is secondary to …

The Generation Of '98 With Emphasis On Miguel De Unamuno, Kathy Harness

Honors Theses

The generation of '98 is a name given to certain individuals united in their literary efforts to better Spain politically, socially and culturally. The date of the group is significant since it symbolizes the transformation of Spanish life as a result of Spain's war with the United States. This group of young non-conformists consisted mainly of Valle Inclan, Azorin, Benavente, Maeztu, Baroja and Unamuno. All were characterized by their protest against Spain's immediate past, demanding new precedents to be set for future action and tradition.

Ibsen’S Influence On The Spanish Dramatist Jose Echegaray, Isabel Alvarez Jan 1968

Ibsen’S Influence On The Spanish Dramatist Jose Echegaray, Isabel Alvarez

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

In the history of literature there are certain writers who owe their importance not only to their creative stature, but to the fact that they give life or incorporate ideas and ideals of their times that had hardly registered in the intellectual sensibility of the elite. Such men represent the new stages in the awareness of men’s condition. One of them was the playwright José Echegaray y Eizaguirre (1832-1916). This thesis records in a modest way some aspects of a renovated consciousness.

Several dramatic critics have pointed out that the Norwegian Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906), influenced the plays of Echegaray; but …

My purpose has been to give a historical description of the Libro de buen amor . This I have it expedient to do by creating four broad categories: First, a brief introduction to the author and book; second, generalities about Juan Ruiz' attitude toward love; third, illustrations in respect to characterization, human behavior, local color, proverbs, and apologues; and fourth, a classification of the comedy of the work.

The Southwest is a region and a concept. New Mexico is an integral part of it...The Spanish folk heritage of the Southwest is a cultural resource that is highly important in the regional complex...My attempt here, then, has been to clarify and make available to more people one feature of this cultural heritage--the nativity plays.
