Spanish Language and Literature Papers

Working With Jose, Clayton Eshleman Jan 1982

Working With Jose, Clayton Eshleman

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

José and I would sit together at a table (generally in his kitchen), each of us with a copy of Vallejo-our stump. Although in our case as translators, we were only sometimes talking around Vallejo-more often, we were talking through or with him, as if he were participant as well as obstacle. But Kelly's sense of «the shared preoccupation» leading to meaningful talk holds as a metaphor for our relationship through Vallejo. The often insurmountable difficulties of his text brought about a kind of mountain-climbing friendship. In a magical way, a heart to heart conversation, in fits and starts, before, …

Madariaga E Hispanoamerica, Ruben Benitez Jan 1982

Madariaga E Hispanoamerica, Ruben Benitez

Solitude And Communion In Miau, Eva Margarita Nieto Jan 1982

Solitude And Communion In Miau, Eva Margarita Nieto

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

Miau continues to be a challenging work because of the complexity of its problems and techniques. The symbolic title has been studied as a key to the metaphoric tension of both structure and characterization within the novel; Don Ramón de Villaamil's deplorable economic situation reveals the narrator's and the author's critical perception of the false and hypocritical urban society that surrounds him. Above all, his suicide, constructed as it is within a quasi-heretical (certainly not orthodox) interpretation of the mandate of the Almighty, has both fascinated and puzzled critics.2 Yet all of these problems, character dehumanization and animalization, the …

Cernuda Y Los Romanticos Ingleses, Carlos-Peregrin Otero

Fasismo Y Poesia En España, Julio Rodriguez-Puertolas Jan 1982

Fasismo Y Poesia En España, Julio Rodriguez-Puertolas

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

La Inmortalidad Y La Tradicion Celtica En Rosalia Castro, Eva M. Kahiluoto Rudat Jan 1982

La Inmortalidad Y La Tradicion Celtica En Rosalia Castro, Eva M. Kahiluoto Rudat

Hacia Una Interpretacion De La Ironia En La Regenta De Clarin, Jose Schraibman, Leda Carazzola

Rodrigo Soriano And Galdos: An Uncharted Friendship, Paul C. Smith

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

Since the appearance in 1948 of H. Chonon Berkowitz's PioneeringPerez Galdós: Spanish Liberal Crusader, researchers have slowly been adding new facts to our knowledge of Galdós's life. But measured against major gaps in Berkowitz's information and questionable assumptions he made about Galdós, progress since 1948 towards compiling a reliable and comprehensive corpus of biographical information has been disappointing.

A Sourcebook For The Interpretation Of Traditional Dance By Outdoor Museums And Historic Sites, Jan Alm Sep 1981

A Sourcebook For The Interpretation Of Traditional Dance By Outdoor Museums And Historic Sites, Jan Alm

Library Faculty & Staff Publications

Folklife scholars often produce work which is valuable to outdoor museums and historic sites. Folklife scholars deal with functional, contextual, emic, and interdisciplinary studies--all approaches which produce valuable interpretive data for museums and sites. This thesis is an example of folklife work designed for use in the museum field.

Outdoor museums and historic sites are increasingly involved with the interpretation of social and emotional life. Because it is a social and emotional event, dance can be a valuable part of this interpretation.

Sites and museums developing programs of traditional dance interpretation may find it helpful to follow several steps: 1.) …

François Lamy And The Rhetoric Of Attention Of Malebranche, Thomas M. Carr Jr. Jan 1981

François Lamy And The Rhetoric Of Attention Of Malebranche, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

François Lamy is always mentioned in the lively polemic over rhetoric touched off in 1694 by the attack of Goibaud Dubois against pulpit eloquence. The Benedictine Lamy became the center of the controversy when a 1698 éclaircissement of his De la connaissance de soi-même (5 vols. Paris, 1694-1698) provided the most thorough critique of the ancient art the quarrel produced. Malebranche himself did not participate directly in this dispute, but since he had made similar criticisms in passing in the Recherche de la vérité (1674) his presence was constantly felt in the background. This resemblance is no coincidence. According to …

Los Comendadores De Córdoba: Realidad, Manierismo Y El Barroco, Matthew D. Stroud Jan 1981

Los Comendadores De Córdoba: Realidad, Manierismo Y El Barroco, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

La Funcion De La Ironia En Obras Selectas De Unamuno, John Frederick Day Jan 1981

La Funcion De La Ironia En Obras Selectas De Unamuno, John Frederick Day

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study attempts to point out the abundant irony in four works of fiction by the Spanish writer and thinker, Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936) and explain its function in expressing his thought. An introductory chapter defining irony and differentiating among its various types is applied to each of these four short novels (considered chronologically): Niebla, Abel Sanchez, Nada menos gue todo un hombre, and San Manuel Bueno, Mátir. The definition and classification of irony comes primarily from the work of D. C. Muecke on this subject, and secondarily from that of Wayne C. Booth. The former divides irony into …

Exploring The Cultural Content Of French Feature Films, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

Of the many forms of realia at the disposal of the French teacher, the feature film can be the most engaging and rewarding. Nothing holds students' attention quite like a movie or gives them as vivid an experience of France, short of going abroad. Moreover, movies can furnish glimpses of milieus and personalities the average tourist or student rarely encounters. Instructors have been quick to make use of this potential in the classroom. In literature courses the movie version of a play or novel is compared with the original text. In civilization classes films are used along with supplemental readings …

Linguistic Rhythm And Grammatical Structure In Afghan Persian, Janet Mueller Bing Jan 1980

Linguistic Rhythm And Grammatical Structure In Afghan Persian, Janet Mueller Bing

English Faculty Publications

Afghan Persian has a rhythm rule that shifts a strong stress to the left when it occurs near another strong stress. Metrical theory (see LLBA 12/1, 7800555) states this shift as a change in the configuration of hierarchical values where the relationships "stronger than" & "weaker than" apply not only to adjacent syllables, but also to groups of syllables, words, & phrases. This rule accounts for the differences in stress patterns on words in isolation & in some phrases. By assuming the rhythm rule & a rule of stress assignment, it is possible to account for both word & phrasal …

Job Opportunities In Virginia For Foreign Language Students, Patricia Lightfoot Brown

Master's Theses

A New York City taxi driver loses a fare because he does not know Spanish. A corporate president waits in silence while an interpreter closes a deal with important Japanese investors. A nurse in Maine cannot diagnose a complaint because the patient is French-Canadian. A government scientist learns about the latest breakthrough in solar energy a full year after it happened, because the news first came out in Russian. All of these people could do their work better if they knew a foreign language, yet none of their jobs would seem to require a language.

The connection between foreign languages …

The Influence Of Military Service On Political And Social Attitudes: A Study Of Socialization In The German Bundeswehr, Ekkehard Lippert, Paul Schneider, Ralf Zoll, Robert K. Shirer (Translated By) Feb 1978

The Influence Of Military Service On Political And Social Attitudes: A Study Of Socialization In The German Bundeswehr, Ekkehard Lippert, Paul Schneider, Ralf Zoll, Robert K. Shirer (Translated By)

German Language and Literature Papers

In recent years, one can observe a more intense interest on the part of the academic community and in the general public of the Federal Republic of Germany in questions concerning the Bundeswehr and about problems of the relationship between the military and society. One of the major reasons for the new scrutiny has been the drastic increase in the number of conscientious objectors to military service, occurring at the end of the 1960s. However, questions of the extensive defense- political aspects of the problem were less at the center of this interest than questions of educational and socialization processes …

Social-Comic Anagnorisis In La Dama Duende, Matthew D. Stroud Oct 1977

Social-Comic Anagnorisis In La Dama Duende, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

La dama duende has become quite a puzzle. Barbara Mujica, in her article, "Tragic Elements in Calderón's La Dama Duende," discusses several elements of Calderonian tragedy in a work which she ultimately defines as "comedy in its highest sense," (p. 328) and she finds implicit social criticism in its vaguely happy ending. Robert ter Horst refutes the idea of comedy and tragedy as leading a double life by saying, in effect, that comedy is potential tragedy which is averted by "anticipating or delaying the conclusions to which tragedy leaps," but then he goes on to claim that Don Manuel …

A Psycholinguistic Contrastive Analysis Of The Dialogues Between Tom Jones And Partridge And Between Don Quijote And Sancho, Betty Ann Engelkes Jan 1977

A Psycholinguistic Contrastive Analysis Of The Dialogues Between Tom Jones And Partridge And Between Don Quijote And Sancho, Betty Ann Engelkes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Henry Fielding was greatly interested in the literary works of Cervantes. This interest is reflected in Fielding's writing, especially character development and, to some extent, in his style. There are obvious similarities in thematic content in the dialogues between Tom Jones and Partridge and between Don Quijote and Sancho. There are also obvious similarities in episodes or situations involving these major characters, which are presented and discussed in this thesis. Both major characters, Tom Jones and Don Quijote, leave home to travel with their specific destinations undetermined. Both Tom Jones and Don Quijote have longings for a beautiful woman whom …
