Review Of Renaissance Studies: Articles 1966–1994, By Malcolm Smith., Russell J. Ganim

Malcolm Smith’s untimely death in 1994 left a serious void in French Renaissance scholarship. This loss to the profession has in part been compensated by a remarkable volume that assembles nearly thirty articles written by Professor Smith over a twenty-eight-year period. The volume also includes an extensive bibliography that lists Professor Smith’s books and critical editions. Professor Smith’s essays, published in journals such as Bibliothèque d’Humanisme et Renaissance, Revue de Littérature Comparée, and The Sixteenth Century Journal, reveal a scholar whose meticulousness and originality remain exemplary for those devoted to research in the humanities. This edition of the Méditations is a noteworthy project that will prove a valuable research tool. Part of Lardon’s suc¬cess stems from the fact that she preserves the integrity of the original 1588 La Rochelle edition by making only the slight¬est and most obvious changes in orthography and punctua¬tion for purposes of enhanced readability. The volume is more remarkable, however, for the ways in which it goes beyond Alan Boase’s 1954 and 1978 editions of the Médita¬tions.

Book Review: Sabine Lardon. L’Écriture De La Méditation Chez Jean De Sponde., Russell J. Ganim

Sabine Lardon’s monograph commands attention for the precision with which it analyses Sponde’s rhetorical tech¬nique in his Méditations sur les Pseaumes. Basing the need for her book on the critics’ preference for writing about Sponde’s lyric offerings rather than his prose, Lardon pro¬duces a study that yields great insight into Sponde’s ad¬ap¬tation of language and form within the context of bibli¬cal exegesis. Lardon’s work makes a valuable contribution to Spondian studies, and will no doubt help renew interest in baroque devotional literature.

Review Of Eva Kocziszky, Mythenfiguren In Hölderlins Spätwerk, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

Kocziszky attempts to explicate the function of the Greek myths in Hölderlin’s late writings, primarily the annotations to his translations of Sophocles’s Oedipus and Antigone. She interprets these myths broadly, and in her discussions explores the figures of the centaur (here her textual basis is “Das Belebende,” Hölderlin’s translation and commentary of one of the Pindaric fragments), Oedipus, Antigone, Danae, and the “Muse,” Greece itself, as tragic figures whose significance emerges as one considers their relationship to the poetological, historical, political, and also profoundly personal concerns expressed in Hölderlin’s work. Publishing online is an increasingly prevalent means for scholars to test their ideas. But what of its challenges? Focusing on an ill-fated Web site dedicated to the polemic French writer Louis-Ferdinand Céline, and on a proposed hypertextual edition of his most multilinear and multisequential work, this paper asks how to reconcile the need of academics with the bullheadedness of publishers who resist the renegotiation of copyright and the marketplace it (once) enabled.

The purpose of this study was to examine student perceptions of instructional techniques that promote language learning. The intent of this study was to inform practice for current and future foreign language teachers. Constant comparative analysis was selected to co11ect, codify and analyze the data. Data for this study was supplied through interviews with advanced level foreign language students from throughout central Indiana, citations from expe1t sources and insights from the researcher's nine years of foreign language teaching expe1icnce. Eight major themes emerged: Initial language learning, Instructional games, Classroom atmosphere, Class comradery, Spoken language, Written language, Assessment and Cultural understanding. …

This article examines the way in which the classical rhetorical tradition inspired John Quincy Adams's public life. While rhetorical scholars have probed Adams's role as Harvard's first Boylston Professor of Rhetoric, they have not appreciated how the classical tradition in general, and Ciceronian rhetoric in particular, influenced his political career. Social scientists, on the other hand, have studied Adams's impact on Antebellum America but have not appreciated how his life-long devotion to classical rhetoric shaped his response to public issues. Spanish comedia brims with examples of fluid gender identification. Not only do women frequently dress as men, but other characters almost always accept them as men or women depending solely on the clothes they wear. Is gender so superficial in these plays that it is merely a function of one's choosing the signifiers one wants to wear? Or is there an essentialism to gender that forces each character to assume the gender that corresponds to his or her sex in order to have a happy ending? Of Art And Epithets: Approaching The Poetry Of Olivier Larronde Through His "Alberto Giacometti Dégaine", Brian G. Kennelly

At the relatively early age of 38, the French poet Olivier Larronde died of an epileptic fit in October 1965. At that time, he had only published two poetic collections, Les Barricades mystérieuses (in 1946) and Rien voilà l'ordre (in 1959), with his third collection, L'Arbre à lettres, only appearing in print in 1966. Despite his limited literary output, Larronde had been considered by Paul Guth in September 1959 as "[u]n des sommets de la poésie Française depuis la guerre" ("Olivier Larronde poète" 114) and was hailed one month after his death by Jean Cau as "l'archange poète de l'après-guerre" …

Pastiche is central to the resistant politics of Kathy Acker's writing--yet she would appear to agree with Fredric Jameson's influential critique of pastiche as "the wearing of a linguistic mask, speech in a dead language" (17). Her 1986 novel Don Quixote is all about having to speak "in a dead language" in the absence of a more "healthy" norm. It begins with the death of the protagonist, a female version of Cervantes's knight, who then goes on to narrate much of the subsequent story. In 1990, Francisco Portes brought his Teatro Pequeño to the Chamizal in El Paso and gave the audience his usual high quality performance of Moreto' s El Iindo don Diego. Those who attended the performance or have seen it on videotape know that Portes' s portrayal of Diego was nothing less than magisterial. He minces, he scolds, he blusters, he fusses, completely obsessed with his appearance and his affect on others. Forms Of Address In The Popular Press: A Comparison Of Spain, Mexico And The United States, Laura Callahan

Address pronouns and their semantic implications have been the subject of numerous studies since Brown and Gilman (1960). Forms of address reflect relationships of asymmetry and symmetry, and advertisers' practices in regard to second-person pronoun usage hold interest for at least two reasons. First, they can serve as evidence for changes in speech community norms. Second, they can show how advertisers attempt to manipulate consumers through metaphoric appeals to the domains and contexts associated with each form of address. A comparison of forms of address in magazines and newspapers in Spain, Mexico, and the United States reveals certain correlations with …

This thesis examines the question of determination of transitivity for a verb through a comparison of processes involved in English and in French. It takes in several theories belonging to the area of the syntax-semantics interface in order to understand how a predicate is construed as either intransitive or direct transitive or indirect transitive in either language.The study focuses on a corpus of verbs that present different argument structures in French and in English. It analyses the various factors that determine the choice of a transitivity status for a given predicate. It discusses whether that process of determination lies in …

There is an ever growing body of criticism noting the homosocial underpinnings of comedia society in which women serve primarily to cement the relationships among men. Barbara Simerka, Harry Vélez de Quiñones, and others have convincingly begun to establish the homosocial nature of the stage society in which women, often as objects given signification only when they acquire exchange value, frequently have little say in their marriages or in other important aspects of their lives. With the advent of research on multiple intelligences and individual differences, alternative methods of assessing individual strengths in content areas are needed. An integral part of the process of acquiring a second language involves these alternative methods of evaluating individual strengths. Portfolio assessment offers an alternative to conventional testing strategies for evaluating progress in second language learning. Portfolios provide meaningful methods to actively engage language students in the basic four modalities of literacy: listening, reading, speaking and writing a second language.
