Codenames For Language Courses, Jeffrey Nolan Mcculley, Chloe Bennett

In this lesson, students deepen their proficiency in the target language by designing and implementing a foreign-language edition of the game Codenames. Drawing on their understanding of vocabulary, semantics, and cultural nuance, students adapt game components and rules to account for language-specific challenges such as word ambiguity, cognates, homophones, and idiomatic meaning. Through collaborative gameplay, students actively apply linguistic knowledge in a communicative, problem-solving context that emphasizes precision and strategic language use. The lesson promotes critical thinking, intercultural competence, and authentic language practice while reinforcing vocabulary acquisition and comprehension in an engaging, student-centered format.

The Russian writer Ivan Shmelyov (1872-1950) is acclaimed not only in Russia, but also widely throughout Europe for his novels, short stories, and fairytales written with a marked depth of meaning, beauty, and expression. He wrote and published throughout his entire life ~ from the pre-revolutionary years in Russia, into the years of the Revolution, and eventually as an émigré in Europe. Although Shmelyov is celebrated throughout Russia and Europe both in academic and public circles, he is little known to the American people, and English-speaking peoples. In academic circles, scholarship on Shmelyov in the English language is extremely limited. …

The Colonial Texts Corpus For The Digital Library Of Old Spanish Texts, Sonia Kania, Francisco Jover

This article offers a detailed description of the Colonial Texts Corpus, one of eleven subcorpora of the Digital Library of Old Spanish Texts published by the Hispanic Seminary of Medieval Studies. Launched in 2018, the corpus allows interactive access to semi-paleographic transcriptions of texts produced in the Americas during the colonial period, a textual type that is under-represented in existing electronic corpora. The rationale of the project is provided, as well as the criteria for the selection of texts to be included and their method of preparation. Finally, the interface of the corpus is illustrated, and its functionality is exemplified.[This …

El objetivo de este artículo es demostrar que parte del legado de José Emilio Pacheco en la poesía mexicana reciente consiste en diversas estrategias discursivas (dicción espuria, cuestionamiento de la autoridad textual, subjetividad descentrada, entre otros) en concordancia con un país continuamente en crisis. Es decir, en la poesía de Pacheco se puede ya ubicar un código de lectura y una política de escritura que convierte el texto en un espacio de reflexión y de resistencia. Con la victoria de los reinos cristianos ibéricos sobre las fuerzas almohades en las Navas de Tolosa en 1212, los cristianos tomaron control de la mayor parte de la Península Ibérica. Para consolidar su control sobre el territorio, los reinos cristianos tuvieron que instalar familias cristianas y lidiar con las poblaciones musulmanas y judías que quedaron. La política acerca de estas poblaciones no-cristianas vacilaba entre tres opciones: la tolerancia, la expulsión y la conversión. El Eros Y Sus Representaciones: Del Modernismo Al Posmodernismo, Alicia Rueda Acedo

In this paper I explore eroticism as a key element in the evolution from modernismo to posmodernismo. If eroticism is a crucial component to understand the binary concept of the world and the universe present in modernist poetry, postmodernist poets distance themselves from this outlook towards a “critic system”. In order to explore this shift, I analyze the works of postmodernist poets such as Baldomero Fernández Moreno, Ramón López Velarde and Regino E. Boti, and vanguardist poet Nicanor Parra, comparing their writing to Rubén Darío’s. I emphasize the evolution from Darío’s conception of the universe where women play an integral …

Duality And The Problem Of Moral Self-Awareness In Dostoevsky's Dvoinik (The Double), Lonny Harrison

This dissertation investigates the problem of duality as it relates to the moral situation of the protagonist of F. M. Dostoevsky's novella Dvoinik (The Double, 1846). Bearing the cultural and literary heritage as well as contemporary social realities of mid-nineteenth century Russia steadily in mind, I analyse the duality motif in Dvoinik in terms of the protagonist's self-consciousness [samosoznanie] and moral perceptions. In particular, the moral ideas that underpin his self-definitions are products of what I refer to as moral selfawareness. In the course of my analysis, I interrogate the modulations of moral reasoning in the mind of the protagonist …
