Etymolgy And Phallocentrism, Renae Redling
Student Scholar Symposium
Historically, linguists view etymology as a distorted and frivolous practice. In the past, Etymology was used irresponsibly to devalue current usage. Etymology reveals the formation of words over time, providing context for language’s current meaning. The history of words, their etymology, has created the words we use today, curating present usage. Words are not simply signs but formed symbols with significance and history. The association of the English language with structures of power, and its firmly rooted context in a patriarchal culture has resulted in limited access to linguistic study for women. Epistolary activity dates to Ancient Greece in affinity with the Roman tradition in which the missive was the most efficient means of communication at a distance. An erudite knowledge of the subject was required since the content would be recorded in posterity. Polymathy and epistemology were therefore required in daily practice of writing encyclicals from the society of Medieval era up to the pinnacle of the epistolary genre during Humanism. The letter, therefore, implied the fact that the writer was out from the territory of the point of departure and the recipient of the correspondence was distant. This exegesis focuses …

Mazahua is an indigenous language of Mexico that currently has about 100,000 speakers. What this language and many other indigenous languages need are literacy curricula and materials to help speakers of this language learn to read and write in their first language. Research has demonstrated that students who learn to read and write in their home language will be more successful when it comes to learning to read and write in the language that is dominant in society (in this case, Spanish in Mexico). Amid concerns for the coming enrollment cliff as well as enrollment attrition in humanities programs, one sector of higher education that continues to grow is international students. In view of growing concerns about enrollment attrition and shrinking resources for sustainable international learning experiences, short-term programs grounded in institutional partnerships may offer opportunities of mutual benefit to international participants and domestic stakeholders. This exploratory case study examines the effects of a six-weeks English language learning program in which seventeen German adults participated in Spring semester 2024.
