French History Textbooks As A Tool For Teaching Civilization, Thomas M. Carr Jr. Oct 1985

French History Textbooks As A Tool For Teaching Civilization, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

The recent controversy in France over the new history textbooks based on the reforms promulgated under René Haby in the middle 1970s can serve as a reminder of the many uses such textbooks can have in our civilization classes. In the past ten years the Haby programs have become the symbol for what many observers in France take to be a serious weakening of the teaching of history since the late 1960s. At the primary level, history was joined to geography and the sciences as an activité d'éveil; no longer was it the privileged instrument for fostering national identity as …

Love, Friendship, And Deceit In La Traición En La Amistad By María De Zayas, Matthew D. Stroud Oct 1985

Love, Friendship, And Deceit In La Traición En La Amistad By María De Zayas, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

María de Zayas' play, La traición en la amistad is, like her novellas, a tale of amorous intrigue and conflict between sexes. The plot is based on several triangles made up of three galanes (Gerardo, Juan, and Liseo), four damas (Fenisa, Marcia, Belisa, and Laura), and a pair of servants (Lucía and León). For the most part their relationships are guided by the traditional treatment of love in the comedia. At the outset only Marcia and Liseo love each other, but their love is complicated by other characters. Gerardo also loves Marcia, and he spends a great deal of the …

Martyrs, Martyrdom, And The Comedia, Matthew D. Stroud Jan 1985

Martyrs, Martyrdom, And The Comedia, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Plays about martyrs form a curious subgenre within the comedia. In a direct contradiction of the values normally associated with the comedia, we are asked to accept that dishonor is glorious, that submission is courageous, and that death is a reward because it brings eternal life. The martyrs themselves, however, as presented in the comedia, are not of a single type; the way each comes to his or her final apotheosis is a function of the comedia setting in which the martyr acts. Too, because martyr plays almost always use external source material, a study of the …

The Comic Récit: Les Plaideurs, Nina Ekstein Jan 1985

The Comic Récit: Les Plaideurs, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Récits are a standard feature of the French classical theater. While normally associated with tragedy (e.g. the famous "récit de Théramène"), seventeenth-century comedy adopted the use of dramatic narrative and adapted it for its own ends. In an examination of the comic récit, two questions arise immediately: how is the récit in comedy different from, first the tragic récit, and second other segments of a comedy?

Narrative Reliability And Spatial Limitations In Bajazet, Nina Ekstein Oct 1984

Narrative Reliability And Spatial Limitations In Bajazet, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Récits are a standard feature in the classical theater, commonly used to bring information to an onstage universe which is limited by the unities of time and place. Action which occurs before the opening of the play finds its natural expression, given the convention of beginning the play in medias res, in narrative form. These are the récits of exposition. Bajazet is unusually rich in such récits: Acomat recounts Amurat's actions, Bajazet's youth, Acomat's own past, and how Roxane came to be able to see Bajazet (I, i, ll. 115-42, 145-56); and Atalide explains how she and Bajazet …

Some Practical Thoughts On Producing Calderón’S Court Plays, Matthew D. Stroud Jul 1984

Some Practical Thoughts On Producing Calderón’S Court Plays, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Calderón's comedias de tramoyas present special problems to a modern producer attempting an authentic stage presentation. This article discusses possible answers to questions relating to staging (the theater itself, sets, the length of the performance, funding, etc.), direction, special effects, costumes, hairstyles, and text (cuts, versions, the use of loas and entremeses, etc.). In addition, court plays also require decisions about the music—tessitura, pitch, instrumentation, and orchestration—most of which must rely on conjecture rather than on concrete knowledge of the original. For each problem, it quickly becomes apparent that absolute authenticity is quite impossible. Stated generally, one must simply …

The Comedia As Potboiler: Juan De Cabeza’S Matar Por Zelos Su Dama, Matthew D. Stroud Jan 1984

The Comedia As Potboiler: Juan De Cabeza’S Matar Por Zelos Su Dama, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Of the hundreds of existing comedias, only a very small percentage has actually received critical attention. Those few that have been studied in greatest depth, such as La vida es sueño, El burlador de Sevilla, Fuenteovejuna, and the like, might be said to represent the most interesting, if not the best, plays in the entire body of comedias.1 Nevertheless, for every famous comedia, there are literally scores of lesser known and never read plays. Perhaps their lack of attention is mute testimony to their mediocrity, but they are nonetheless comedias and are of critical interest …

Desire Seeking Expression: Mallarmé'S "Prose Pour Des Esseintes", Marshall C. Olds Oct 1983

Desire Seeking Expression: Mallarmé'S "Prose Pour Des Esseintes", Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

Over the past sixty-five years of Mallarméan criticism, few poems have come to occupy as central a place in the discussion of the poet's work as "Prose pour des Esseintes." While it is generally agreed that, beginning around 1862, the development of Mallarmé's principal conceits and images, of his syntax and his directing ideas, culminates in "Un Coup de dés," "Prose" is often held to be not only Mallarmé's most hermetic poem but also the one that deals most directly with the nature of poetic composition. Commentators have variously called it Mallarmé's ars poetica, a conviction piece, a taking stock …

The Visual Arts In The Civilization Classroom, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

Although the visual arts have long been a feature of civilization courses, instructors do not always exploit their full potential. This paper presents a checklist to help teachers identify the relevant aspects of the arts for study. Its goal is to facilitate comprehensive treatment of works of art by focusing on three areas: the aesthetic dimension, the social context, and the artist’s own experience. The checklist is followed by a series of activities which encourage students to integrate the various aspects of the arts while practicing their language skills.

Tirso's Wife-Murder Play: La Vida Y Muerte De Herodes, Matthew D. Stroud Jan 1983

Tirso's Wife-Murder Play: La Vida Y Muerte De Herodes, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Tirso's La vida y muerte de Herodes is a curious play for a number of reasons. Dating most likely from 1620-21, it is one of several plays based on Herod's life both in Biblical accounts and in Josephus' Antiquities. Lodovico Dolce was the first Renaissance playwright to take advantage of the historical but very dramatic subject matter in his Marianna of 1565, and, closer to Tirso's era, Alexandre Hardy and Tristan l'Hermite created French versions; Hardy's dates from the period 1625 to 1632 and Tristan's was published in 1637. Of course, Calderón published in 1637 the version best known to …

The Functions Of The Récit In L'Ecole Des Femmes, Nina Ekstein Jan 1983

The Functions Of The Récit In L'Ecole Des Femmes, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Since L'Ecole des femmes was first performed in 1662, much mention has been made of the numerous récits in the play. In La Critique de l'Ecole des femmes, Lysidas criticizes the play because "dans cette comédie-ci, il ne se passe point d'actions, et tout consiste en des récits que vient faire Agnès ou Horace.'' Indeed, the entire love intrigue takes place offstage and is reported in the form of récits. Far from being tiresome recitals, these narratives are integrated into the structure of the play on numerous levels.

The Rhetorical Theories Of Malebranche: Persuasion Through Imitation Or Attention?, Thomas M. Carr Jr. Jan 1983

The Rhetorical Theories Of Malebranche: Persuasion Through Imitation Or Attention?, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

France's most prominent philosopher of the second half of the seventeenth century is reputed to be no friend of rhetoric. Bernard Tocanne declares, "C'est chez Malebranche que se mettent en place tous les arguments mis en oeuvre par les adversaires de la rhétorique à la fin du siècle," and Peter France calls him "a philosopher who had no love for rhetoric." The basis of such judgments is the Oratorian's attacks in the Recherche de la vérité (1674) against the use of the imagination and passions in the eloquence of Tertullian, Seneca, and Montaigne. Malebranche's critique is symptomatic of the legacy …

The Resocialization Of The Mujer Varonil In Three Plays By Vélez, Matthew D. Stroud Jan 1983

The Resocialization Of The Mujer Varonil In Three Plays By Vélez, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

When Arnold Reichenberger writes of the tendency in the comedia toward a restored society, he refers to the conservative, patriarchal, ideal society represented by the dramatic works. Characters who exhibit eccentric social behavior are not allowed to remain marginally attached to the society; they are either resocialized into the fabric of the comedia's society or they are expelled. This pattern not only allows for the possibility of an implicit moral lesson, as Alexander A. Parker would assert, but it also creates dramatic tension the resolution of which results in exciting reversals in the plot. As might be expected, the …

Andromaque. V,V: Disorder, Irony, And Progression, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

The denouement of Andromaque (V,v), as is the case in most tragedies, brings with it a return to order, but the impression of order lies off stage with Andromaque's ascension to the throne rather than on stage with Oreste and Pylade. On stage, disorder reigns, and this disorder is a result of several factors: the pressing necessity of a quick departure, Oreste's madness, and, significantly, the ironic instability of language in this scene. This instability takes the form of statements whose meaning later changes in the light of some subsequent action or information. Such shifts in meaning are not uncommon …

The Folklife Expressions Of Three Isle Royale Fishermen: A Sense Of Place Examination, Timothy Cochrane May 1982

The Folklife Expressions Of Three Isle Royale Fishermen: A Sense Of Place Examination, Timothy Cochrane

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Selected forms of three Isle Royale fishermen’s folklife expressions – material folk culture, social folk custom and narrative folklore – were documented and analyzed. The informants are representative of the group of Scandinavian fishermen who operated commercial fisheries on Isle Royale from the 1880s to date. Documentary and analytical emphasis centered on occupational aspects of their folklife expressions and the fishermen’s perception of the island archipelago. Accordingly, special interest was focused on the fishermen’s interplay with the Lake Superior and Isle Royale environs. Selected folklife expressions were analyzed to uncover fishermen’s cognitive and affective responses to their insular environment. Analysis …

Stylistic Considerations Of Calderón’S Opera Librettos, Matthew D. Stroud Jan 1982

Stylistic Considerations Of Calderón’S Opera Librettos, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

The two plays of Calderón that were set to music in their entirety have a number of common characteristics beyond those associated with the mythological plays as a whole. Both of the plays were performed in 1660, La púrpura de la rosa on January 17 to celebrate the marriage of the Infanta María Teresa to Louis XIV of France, and Celos aun del aire matan on December 5 to celebrate the third birthday of the Infante Felipe Próspero. Presented in the Palacio del Buen Retiro, set to music by Juan Hidalgo, staged with the appropriate elaborate machinery, and performed by …

Ilegible, Hijo De Flauta: Guion Cinematorafico De Juan Larrea Y Luis Buñuel, David Bary

Modes Of Being In Gabriel Miro's El Angel, El Molino, El Caracol Del Faro, Robert Johnson

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

El angel, el molino, el caracol del faro is (at least in the first four of its five parts) a kind of modern Calila e Dimna, a collection of fables, parables, fantasies and legends. It contains twenty estampas, five under the heading «Estampas rurales,» three «Estampas de cuentos,» three «Estampas del agua, del rio y del mar,» five «Estampas de un le6n y una leona,» and four «Estampas del faro,» all of which appeared individually in Barcelona's La Publicidad between February 7, 1919 and October 6, 1920. The collection seems to be an anomaly among the other secular works …

Manuel De La Revilla, Crico Literario, Carlos Garcia Barron

Ambivalence And Ambiguity In La Familia De Pascual Duarte, Leon Livingstone

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

When La familia de Pascual Duarte irrupted onto the Spanish literary scene in 1942 it created a furore whose effects have still not subsided. Most particularly is this reflected in the stream of critical surmise that continues to surround the work. The bafflement of interpreters, the «frustrating conjecture» 1 to which they are impelled, centers around the evaluation of the protagonist as good or bad, hero or coward, victim or criminal, and also «difficulties» which «concern certain unexplained mysteries in the narrative. 2Among the latter can be noted the seemingly arbitrary killing by Pascual of his dog Chispa, the …
