The Comedia As Playscript, Matthew D. Stroud Jan 1989

The Comedia As Playscript, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

The relationship between literary text and theatrical performance is the subject of intense discussion and occasional animosity between those who believe that performance is only the faithful translation of the text from one medium to another and those for whom a playscript is only a starting point or a secondary element to performance. We do know, however, that the comedias were written to be performed, that there are performance signs imbedded in the texts themselves, and that if we ignore performance altogether we end up teaching the literary texts as though they were novels or poems. The problem that this …

Review Of German Poetry: An Anthology From Klopstock To Enzensberger. Edited By Martin Swales, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Oct 1988

Review Of German Poetry: An Anthology From Klopstock To Enzensberger. Edited By Martin Swales, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Noted Germanist Martin Swales offers a volume designed to introduce English speakers to German lyric poetry from the mid-eighteenth century to the present. Seventeen poets are included, each represented with several poems (between six and eight is the norm, with Goethe at the high end with eighteen, and Novalis at the low, with two). The poems are in German only; Swales' intrduction and notes (an intrductory paragraph on each author and brief synopses of each poem along with some formal observations) are in English. Swales' historical schema lends this book of poetry a degree of thematic coherence unusual for a …

Review Of Christa Wolf "Nachdenken Über Christa T." By Wolfram And Helmtrud Mauser, Robert K. Shirer Oct 1988

Review Of Christa Wolf "Nachdenken Über Christa T." By Wolfram And Helmtrud Mauser, Robert K. Shirer

German Language and Literature Papers

Nachdenken über Christa T. is one of the most widely discussed novels in GDR literature, and a reviewer therefore approaches a new book-length interpretation with some trepidation. However, Wolfram and Helmtrud Mauser's study is fresh, insightful, and clearly written. The volume simultaneously does justice to a very difficult text and situates it intelligently in the context of GDR literature of the 1960s and 1970s. While their interpretation is not exhaustive, the authors demonstrate familiarity with the large body of Wolf literature, and their notes point the reader to other interpretative approaches.

Review Of Uwe Johnsons Frühwerk: Im Spiegel Der Deutschsprachigen Literaturkritik By Nicolai Riedel, Robert K. Shirer Oct 1988

Review Of Uwe Johnsons Frühwerk: Im Spiegel Der Deutschsprachigen Literaturkritik By Nicolai Riedel, Robert K. Shirer

German Language and Literature Papers

Nicolai Riedel has once more performed a valuable service for Uwe Johnson scholars. With this volume he provides a documentary complement to his excellent bibliographies and his useful analyses of Johnson reception. Riedel has collected seventy short newspaper and magazine pieces about Johnson's early work, many of which have been hitherto virtually inaccessible. There are six general features, twenty-two reviews of Mutmassungen über Jakob, twenty-two reviews of Das dritte Buch über Achim, and twenty reviews of the posthumously published first novel Ingrid Babendererde.

Hallucination And Point Of View In La Tentation De Saint Antoine, Marshall C. Olds Sep 1988

Hallucination And Point Of View In La Tentation De Saint Antoine, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

Over the past twenty-five years, as readings of Flaubert's texts have become increasingly concerned with the definition of various narrative structures, the study of point of view has been inextricably tied to determining how his narratives generate (or, to some minds, subvert) meaning. Thus it is that almost all hermeneutical approaches have been concerned with point of view in one way or another, the procedure usually being to establish the principal or authoritative narrational axis (or perhaps a pseudo-authoritative one) and then to plot and analyze the departures from it. Point of view is not a new concern, of course, …

Review Of Eric L. Santner, Friedrich Hölderlin: Narrative Vigilance And The Poetic Imagination., Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy Apr 1988

Review Of Eric L. Santner, Friedrich Hölderlin: Narrative Vigilance And The Poetic Imagination., Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

Eric Santner's study, "intended both as a 'revisionist' reading of Hölderlin's later poetry and an introduction to a larger study of issues concerning narrative theory," interprets formal aspects of the later poems—what has traditionally been called their harte Fügung—in terms of narrative parataxis, i.e. a breakdown in the Idealist "narrative of redemption." Santner begins with a theoretical discussion of narrative drawn chiefly from Hayden White and Roland Barthes (especially from Camera Lucida). Opposing "narrative vigilance," that potentially pathological compulsion to comprehend particulars within a hypotactic, overarching narrative structure, is a strategy of parataxis whereby narrative vigilance is released …

Flaubert's Dis/En Closures, Marshall C. Olds Jan 1988

Flaubert's Dis/En Closures, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

The topos of the window and analogous framing devices is one of the recurrent characteristics of Flaubert's work, and, as examples of this discretionary practice, one need recall only some of the many scenes that are framed by windows: the view of Yonville through the carriage window or the stainedglass window that is, very nearly, La Légende de Saint Julien l'hospitalier. But windows are only incidentally our concern, for as the views of Yvetot and Constantinople equally signify something beyond themselves, so does this topos tie into a larger question, which is the evolution of Flaubert's practice of closure.

The …

Uses And Misuses Of Language: Uwe Johnson’S Ingrid Babendererde As A Gdr Novel, Robert K. Shirer Jan 1988

Uses And Misuses Of Language: Uwe Johnson’S Ingrid Babendererde As A Gdr Novel, Robert K. Shirer

German Language and Literature Papers

Uwe Johnson is seldom discussed as a GDR author, for it was not until after his 1959 decision «to relocate,» as he put it, to the West that Johnson became established as a literary force. Literary historians often mention Johnson along with Gunther Grass and Martin Walser when they discuss the important novelists that burst onto the literary scene in West Germany at the end of the 1950’s. But Johnson’s work—from Mutamaßsunmgen über Jakob to Jahrestage—is unthinkable without his education and experiences in the Soviet Occupation Zone and the GDR. With the posthumous publication of his first novel Ingrid …

Noise And (In)Coherence In Le Roman Comique, Nina Ekstein Jan 1988

Noise And (In)Coherence In Le Roman Comique, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Noises play an unusually large role in Paul Scarron's Le Roman Comique (1651, 1657): there are over three hundred explicit references in the novel to some form of noise. Although noise is not commonly assigned a significant role in prose fiction, its substantial presence suggests that it may indeed have functions in Le Roman Comique beyond simply being a realistic or comic feature. I intend to show how noise is part of the narrative structure, and, furthermore, how it exemplifies and reinforces the tension between coherence and incoherence in the novel.

Review Of Mallarmé And The Sublime By Louis Wirth Marvick, Marshall C. Olds Nov 1987

Review Of Mallarmé And The Sublime By Louis Wirth Marvick, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

In this comparative study, it is Louis Marvick's aim to read Mallarmé’s prose writings in light of the historical discussion of the sublime as a category of esthetic experience. Understanding of the sublime comes primarily from Longinus and the English tradition (Burke, Dr. Johnson, Hazlitt, Coleridge), filtered through Kant's "Analytic of the Sublime." Except for a few brief references to French writers other than Mallarmé (Boileau, the seventeenth-century critic René Bary, Baudelaire), Professor Marvick eliminates from his study any discussion of the French literary tradition, preferring to focus on a body of essays specifically on the subject of the sublime. …

Review Of Mlchal Peled Ginsburg, Flaubert Writing: A Study In Narrative Strategies, Marshall C. Olds Sep 1987

Review Of Mlchal Peled Ginsburg, Flaubert Writing: A Study In Narrative Strategies, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

This study starts from the premise that the young Flaubert had difficulty sustaining his narratives, that once underway, the opposing efforts of both narrator and character to promote their individual interests within the text led to an impasse, a kind of narrational death, which required a particular strategy (presumably on the part of the author) to circumvent the difficulty and keep things going. For Ginsburg this "stammering" (1) was a problem that Flaubert never quite outgrew. Consequently, she invites us to read his development as a novelist in terms of the different solutions the various works bring to the problem …

Review Of Reinhard Breymayer, Ed., Hölderlin, Friedrich (Zuschreibung). Hymne An Die Heiterkeit. Ein Unbekanntes Lied “Gesungen Bei Der Einweihung Eines Gartenhauses Das Zur Aufschrift Hat: Serenity’, Priscilla A. Hayden-Roy

German Language and Literature Papers

On August 31, 1984, the Tübingen Germanist Reinhard Breymayer published an article in the Stuttgarter Zeitung announcing his discovery of a poem with the heading “Gesungen bei der Einweihung eines Gartenhauses, das zur Aufschrift hat: SERENITY,” which he believed could be ascribed conclusively to Friedrich Hölderlin. The announcement sparked off a minor controversy among several Germanists which was documented in the European press, the most critical voice being that of Jochen Hieber (FAZ, September 17, 1984; FAZ, October 22, 1984). Breymayer came across the poem over a year prior to his announcement while reading through the volumes …

Review Of Marthe Robert, En Haine Du Roman, Marshall C. Olds Apr 1987

Review Of Marthe Robert, En Haine Du Roman, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

En haine du roman is a lively and well-written discussion with the stated objective of wanting to account for the near religious veneration with which Flaubert viewed his activity as a writer. The answer is that Flaubert's exclusive devotion to writing was a retreat from life, indeed a hatred of it and particularly of the drives towards social success and power and, at root, sexual conquest and procreation. Yet the very fact that he wrote, and that he wrote books like Madame Bovary when he (as he sometimes said) preferred writing books like La Tentation de saint Antoine, points to …

Further Considerations Of History And Law In The Wife-Murder "Comedias", Matthew D. Stroud Jan 1987

Further Considerations Of History And Law In The Wife-Murder "Comedias", Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Those who, like Américo Castro and Arnold Reichenberger, assume a great similarity between historical fact and dramatic action, use literary texts to posit speculations about historical fact and historical fact to assert the realism of literary situations. Despite the potential tautology inherent in such arguments, these scholars have attempted to prove their cases by bringing to bear the following evidence: 1) real wife murders documented in Spanish history; 2) laws regarding the punishment of an adulterous wife 3) Spanish social history and the formation of a national Spanish personality; 4) contemporary concepts of honor, some fictional and some didactic, that …

Review Of The Apocalyptic Vision: A Thematic Exploration Of Postwar German Literature, By Alan Frank Keele, Robert K. Shirer Feb 1986

Review Of The Apocalyptic Vision: A Thematic Exploration Of Postwar German Literature, By Alan Frank Keele, Robert K. Shirer

German Language and Literature Papers

Alan Frank Keele sets out to identify an "apocalyptic vision" of German society in postwar German literature and to describe the literary figures who see it and spread their warnings about it. The vision consists of runaway technology, evil toys, aborted children, and "de-humanized robot/citizens" (p. 125). Those who see and seek to share this vision are the physically and psychologically walking wounded, refugees from a war-torn world, who reject the values of postwar society.

Before examining the author's argument and evidence, it is important to point out two serious terminological weaknesses. Whereas the subtitle promises an exploration of "postwar …

Review Of Richard E.Goodkin, The Symbolist Home And The Tragic Home: Mallarmé And Oedipus, Marshall C. Olds Jan 1986

Review Of Richard E.Goodkin, The Symbolist Home And The Tragic Home: Mallarmé And Oedipus, Marshall C. Olds

French Language and Literature Papers

In this comparative study, it is Richard E. Goodkin's subtly argued project to discuss dramatic tragedy and poetic symbolism as two responses to the problem of establishing what is most human in language, what Goodkin calls home. To be sure, Heidegger lies behind part of the author's development of this image. Yet, the principal force of the metaphor comes from a close reading of the texts under study, where the concept of home is tied to human attempts to exceed human limits, leading to self-recognition. Thus, he brings together tragedy and symbolism and shows their common vocabulary and concerns.

La Literatura Y La Mujer En El Barroco: Valor, Agravio Y Mujer, De Ana Caro, Matthew D. Stroud Jan 1986

La Literatura Y La Mujer En El Barroco: Valor, Agravio Y Mujer, De Ana Caro, Matthew D. Stroud

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Voltaire's Fables Of Discretion: The Conte Philosophique In Le Taureau Blanc, Thomas M. Carr Jr. Oct 1985

Voltaire's Fables Of Discretion: The Conte Philosophique In Le Taureau Blanc, Thomas M. Carr Jr.

French Language and Literature Papers

Le Taureau blanc (1774) offers remarkable insight into Voltaire's use of the conte as persuasive discourse for two reasons. First, as the purest example of the genre among his last contes, it is in many ways the quintessence of his talents as a conteur. This tale does not cover any new ideological territory in its treatment of the Old Testament, a preoccupation found in much of his production of the Ferney period; nor does it introduce any technical innovations. But unlike Voltaire's last tragedies, where his reworking of the themes and dramatic conventions of his dramatic successes of the 1730s …
