The works in my thesis exhibition have all been made within my three years attending The University of Mississippi and relate to my experiences traveling around South America and various places in North America, where I observed how different cultures view power and how it serves them. In this body of work, I looked for meaning in the process of discovery, whether it is found in a personal, social, or regional background. Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s Ecstasy of St Teresa for the Cornaro Chapel (1647–52) is perhaps the artist’s most sensually charged creation, and the apparently physical nature of Teresa’s ecstasy is today even acknowledged in survey textbooks. Teresa herself opened the door to this reading when, in describing her spiritual ecstasy, she admitted that ‘the body doesn’t fail to share in some of it, and even a great deal’. Yet the balance between sense and spirit in the sculpture emerges somewhat differently if it is viewed (literally and figuratively) in context: as an altarpiece in a chapel where its presentation is structured …

This series of abstracted landscapes is a visual representation of a challenge to step outside of my comfort zone. The paintings are an expression of emotions never before presented in the artist's work. The series expresses the visceral sensation of isolation, anger, and solace experienced throughout the creation of the work. The abstracted landscapes are an expression of the journey from anger and frustration to a path towards understanding and enlightenment. The exhibition worked to demystify artistic practice by revealing parallels between art and scientific research and methodology. Tethered addresses the innate fear of forgetting where an individual's family originates, both physically and historically. Not long after discovering that part of my family was almost completely annihilated during the Holocaust, I produced Tethered as visual documentation of the long-term effects of families of survivors. The exhibition is also influenced by my grandmother's experiences as a Mauthausen concentration camp survivor and my own experiences being raised by a survivor.

AUCTUS: The Journal of Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship

Lili Un, a Painting and Printmaking major at VCU’s Monroe Park Campus in Richmond, collaborated with Rana Rwaished, an Interior Design graduate from VCU in Qatar, to explore the translation of two-dimensional painting into three-dimensional interior design elements. Since they were physically separated, Un and Rwaished maintained a vigorous dialogue through Skype. Once one collaborator finished a project, she would send detailed images to the other, who would then create a new work based on those designs. The paintings were scanned into Adobe Illustrator, and the lines were extracted to form a separate file. Both the qualities of these lines …

Isabella d'Este's activities as an art collector and patron are richly documented and have received a correspondingly large amount of art historical attention in the modern era. Yet Isabella--and the studiolo she had created and decorated in the Mantuan Palazzo Ducale--have gotten mixed reviews in this scholarship; the former has historically emerged as difficult, irrational, and acquisitive rather than discerning, while the paintings done for the latter by Andrea Mantegna, Perugino, Lorenzo Costa, and Correggio between 1497 and 1530 are often treated as curiosities-stilted in style and didactic in subject-within the larger scope of the artists' careers. Renaissance engravings are objects of exquisite beauty and incomparable intricacy that are composed entirely of lines. Artists began using this intaglio process in Europe as early as 1430. This captivating catalogue focuses on the height of the medium, from 1480 to 1650, when engravers made dramatic and rapid visual changes to engraving technique as they responded to the demands of reproducing artworks in other media. The Frontiers in Printmaking conference at Illinois State University took place October 3-5, 2007. The conference featured the 30th anniversary celebration of Normal Editions Workshop (NEW) and was held in conjunction with the sesquicentennial year of the University. Frontiers in Printmaking featured discourse on various historical topics, highlighted current developments, and explored future directions while focusing attention on the contemporary contributions and rich heritage of printmaking and related subjects to the overall visual culture.

Jerry Bywaters – Lone Star Printmaker chronicles the printmaking career of Texas regionalist artist Jerry Bywaters (1906 – 1989). In 1935, Bywaters began recording the prints he made, primarily lithographs, when he noted ‘“Gargantua” First litho made (1935)’ on the first page of his print notebook. This study is based on that notebook and places Bywaters’s printmaking career within the context of art developments in Dallas through the 1940s. It includes a catalogue of his prints, information regarding the history of each print, and reproductions of his known illustrations and ephemera.

Introduction

Most Turkish names have functional meanings. By an auspicious quirk of chance, occasionally by determinism, some names provide an apt characterization of the bearer's talents or personality. So it is with the artist llgim Veryeri-Alaca, whose given name signifies "mirage" and married name denotes "speckled" or "spectral." Her variegated pieces, embracing such norms and techniques as collage, lacework, engraving, ebru (marbled paper), and watercolor, wondrously integrate her Middle Eastern (or specifically Turkish) aesthetics with her mastery of Western craftsmanship.

The Present Past: A Survey Of Work By David Leach, David Leach, Robert And Elaine Stein Galleries

In 1982 printmaker and painter David Leach created a photo intaglio print titled Broken Line (fig .1) that records an illusion, a seeming change in angle of a twig partly immersed in water, an effect resulting from light refraction. The image might almost serve as commentary on Leach's production as artist. He has stated that in 1982 he realized he was not a "post-studio" artist. 1 That conclusion caused him to move away from the conceptualist investigations that had become the focus of his art by the later 1970s and for which work he had established a reputation.
