It was the purpose of this study to investigate and explore the use of the human image as a compositional element in a series of original prints. All of the available printmaking techniques within the knowledge of this artist were called upon to best express concepts and forms which he desired to portray. There is a wealth of printed material on intaglio printmaking techniques and history, but there is relatively little printed material or work directed towards the inclusion of intaglio printmaking in the secondary school art curriculum. It is my basic assertion in this thesis that intaglio printmaking can be taught with success at the secondary level.

The purpose of this thesis was to document and evaluate experimentation in color collagraphs using combination printmaking techniques. The text deals with the emergence historically of the collagraph, the technical procedures involved in the making of a collagraph, and the results obtained in color collagraphs using combined printmaking techniques. The plates, original color collagraphs, demonstrate visually specific technical processes. Original collagraph prints are on file with the Department of Art, University of Northern Iowa.
