Chloride volatility processes for purifying actinide and rare earth elements have historically required the use of Cl2 tanks. To minimize the hazards associated with these processes, an apparatus was designed to produce Cl2 via molten salt electrolysis. Within this apparatus, one can generate Cl2, chlorinate metals, and consume excess Cl2. Here, electrode materials were tested for their ability to generate Cl2, the composition of the gaseous electrolysis product was evaluated using a quadrupole mass spectrometer, and a Ce foil sample was successfully chlorinated using the electrochemically generated Cl2.

Investigation Of Fault Detection And Redundant Control Strategy For Model Predictive Control Of Distillation Column, Rajalakshmi R

Theses and Dissertations

Model Predictive Controller (MPC) is one of the industrial-ready control systems and an ideal choice for complex, slow-varying, and energy-intense Distillation Columns (DC). However, MPCs are subjected to failures and their performance degrades with faults and disturbances. Hence, there is a need for a redundant control strategy to ensure the continuous operation of MPC-controlled DC, which is investigated in this work.

A pilot-plant binary DC used to separate methanol and water is implemented with a computer-controlled system and is subjected to Pseudorandom Binary Excitation Signals (PRBS). The output response acquired is used to develop a MIMO (Multi-Input Multi- Output) state-space …

Cost Estimation Proxy Models For Economic Evaluations In Petroleum Projects: A Case Study From The Onshore Gas Field In The Southern Coastal Tanzania Basin, Fulmence Kaborogo

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Petroleum economic evaluation involves estimating revenues from forecasted production profiles and field costs including capital expenditures (CAPEX), drilling expenses (DRILLEX), and operating expenses (OPEX). The existing cost-estimating tool requires several inputs making it time-intensive and difficult to use with few data during the early stages of projects. Majority of the previously developed time saving cost estimations proxy models rely on unrealistic assumptions that include uniform operational costs for different fields with a different number of wells, casings, and drilled depths. This work focused at developing proxy models that consider the variability of the development costs with different parameters. The developed …

Design And Development Of Deep Eutectic Solvent Assisted Pressurized Liquid Extraction Of Nutraceuticals, Harish Babu B 2024 SASTRA Deemed to be University

Design And Development Of Deep Eutectic Solvent Assisted Pressurized Liquid Extraction Of Nutraceuticals, Harish Babu B

Theses and Dissertations

Over recent decades, the usage of nutraceuticals has been exponentially increasing as alternates to pharmaceutical drugs. However, extraction of these therapeutically significant compounds from their corresponding sources requires the use of volatile organic solvents like hexane, ethanol and chloroform which increases the global warming potential. This problem has been overcome in recent decades by the use of supercritical carbon dioxide (SCO2) as the extraction solvent. Since SCO2 is non-polar in nature, the extraction of polar compounds with better efficiency is questionable.

On the other hand, modernization in solvent engineering has created generations of green solvents like ionic liquids (ILs), deep …

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have the potential to tackle major challenges associated with fossil fuel-sourced energy consumption. Nafion, a perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membrane that has high proton conductivity and good chemical stability, is a standard proton exchange membrane (PEM) used in PEMFCs. However, PEM degradation is one of the significant issues in the long-term operation of PEMFCs. Membrane degradation can lead to a decrease in the performance and the lifespan of PEMFCs. The membrane can degrade through chemical, mechanical, and thermal pathways. This paper reviews the different causes of all three routes of PFSA degradation, underlying mechanisms, their …
