Modern oil and gas extraction faces challenges, notably from the surplus of produced water, hampering hydrocarbon recovery and raising environmental and economic concerns. A promising solution is the injection of preformed particle gels (PPGs) into the reservoir's fractures and high permeability zones, facilitating production processes. This study introduces a novel class of inorganically cross-linked PPGs with exceptionally high swelling capacities, comprising sulfonated polyacrylamide cross-linked with aluminum attached to acetate, nitrate, sulfate, and lactate anions individually. These PPGs function as superabsorbents, capable of absorbing water at a ratio of 100-700 times their dry weight while maintaining adequate gel strength up to …

This study utilized anthracite coal samples from Zhijin Block and applied NaClO as the oxidant to investigate the effects of oxidation treatment on permeability enhancement and coal fines migration. Subsequent to oxidation treatment, the coal samples demonstrated an average increase of 42.17% in the equivalent hydraulic aperture (EHA). This treatment also resulted in the expansion of fluid flow channels, contributing to an average permeability enhancement of 108.85% in the coal samples. Resulting from the non-uniform dissolution of the oxidant on the fracture surface of coal, self-propping fractures were formed, effectively maintaining the conductivity of fractures. The oxidation treatment converted the …

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a devastating and progressive disease with limited treatment options. Endothelial dysfunction plays a central role in the development and progression of PAH, yet the underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood. The endosome-lysosome system is important to maintain cellular health, and the small GTPase RAB7 regulates many functions of this system. Here, we explored the role of RAB7 in endothelial cell (EC) function and lung vascular homeostasis. We found reduced expression of RAB7 in ECs from patients with PAH. Endothelial haploinsufficiency of RAB7 caused spontaneous pulmonary hypertension (PH) in mice. Silencing of RAB7 in ECs induced broad …

Nanoparticle additives increase the thermal conductivity of conventional heat transfer fluids at low concentrations, which leads to improved heat transfer fluids and processes. This study investigates lignin-coated magnetic nanocomposites (lignin@Fe3O4) as a novel bio-based magnetic nanoparticle additive to enhance the thermal conductivity of aqueous-based fluids. Kraft lignin was used to encapsulate the Fe3O4 nanoparticles to prevent agglomeration and oxidation of the magnetic nanoparticles. Lignin@Fe3O4 nanoparticles were prepared using a pH-driven co-precipitation method with a 3:1 lignin to magnetite ratio and characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron …

Early water breakthrough with high water cut through highly conductive thief zones is a prevalent problem in many water-flooded oil reservoirs. Smart polymers that are sensitive to temperature changes, also known as thermo-responsive polymers, e.g., polyethylene glycol (PEG) have great advantages over conventional polymers that can be exploited to solve the problem of conductive thief zones. Thus, this study aims at designing and synthesizing a thermo-responsive polymer using Gamma Ray Induced radiation with good tolerance against high temperature, and high salinity reservoir conditions with feasible and economic synthesis procedure for application in Egyptian oil reservoirs. That is a combined use …

Bismuth has been investigated as a potential liquid electrode for molten salt electrorefining, but the electrochemical behavior of Bi3+/Bi redox couple has received scant attention in eutectic LiCl-KCl melts and no studies were found in the ternary LiCl-KCl-CaCl2 melts. LiCl-KCl-CaCl2 melts offer some advantages over eutectic LiCl-KCl, such as a lower melting point. Cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry, chronoamperometry, chronopotentiometry and open-circuit chronopotentiometry were used to measure electrochemical parameters, such as diffusivity and standard apparent potential of bismuth electrodeposition, in LiCl-KCl and LiCl-KCl-CaCl2 eutectics. The mean diffusivity values of 6.71 x 10-6 cm2 …

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been identified as promising biomarkers for the noninvasive diagnosis of various diseases. However, challenges in separating EVs from soluble proteins have resulted in variable EV recovery rates and low purities. Here, we report a high-yield ( > 90%) and rapid ( < 10 min) EV isolation method called FLocculation via Orbital Acoustic Trapping (FLOAT). The FLOAT approach utilizes an acoustofluidic droplet centrifuge to rotate and controllably heat liquid droplets. By adding a thermoresponsive polymer flocculant, nanoparticles as small as 20 nm can be rapidly and selectively concentrated at the center of the droplet. We demonstrate the ability of FLOAT to separate urinary EVs from the highly abundant Tamm-Horsfall protein, addressing a significant obstacle in the development of EV-based liquid biopsies. Due to its high-yield nature, FLOAT reduces biofluid starting volume requirements by a factor of 100 (from 20 mL to 200 µL), demonstrating its promising potential in point-of-care diagnostics.

Geodetic data in plate boundary zones reflect the accrual of tectonic strain and stress, which will ultimately be released in earthquakes, and so they can provide valuable insights into future seismic hazards. To incorporate geodetic measurements of contemporary deformation into the 2022 revision of the New Zealand National Seismic Hazard Model 2022 (NZ NSHM 2022), we derive a range of strain-rate models from published interseismic Global Navigation Satellite Systems velocities for New Zealand. We calculate the uncertainty in strain rate excluding strain from the Taupō rift–Havre trough and Hikurangi subduction zone, which are handled separately, and the corresponding moment rates. …

Four developed machine learning algorithms are proposed to prognosticate the CO2 solubility in amino acid salt solutions, blended with amine solutions as additives, in broad ranges of temperature and pressure. From literature 375 experimental data points for CO2 solubility were collected. The results from the applied algorithms indicated that the CO2 solubility is estimated acceptably close to the experimental values. In the best case, the developed network estimates CO2 solubility in the stated solutions with an average relative deviation of 6.53 % and a correlation coefficient of 0.9892.

Nanoporous structures with 3D interconnected networks are traditionally made by dealloy- ing a binary precursor. Certain approaches for fabricating these materials have been applied to refrac- tory multi-principal element alloys (RMPEAs), which can be suitable candidates for high-temperature applications. In this study, nanoporous refractory multi-principal element alloys (np-RMPEAs) were fabricated from magnesium-based thin films (VMoNbTaMg) that had been prepared by magnetron sputtering. Vacuum thermal dealloying (VTD), which involves sublimation of a higher vapor pres- sure element, is a novel technique for synthesizing nanoporous refractory elements that are prone to oxidation. When VMoNbTaMg was heated under vacuum, a nanoporous structure was …

Performance, cost, and safety are vital factors in producing and handling lithium-ion batteries. Using a dry process reduces the cost and environmental impact of producing large-scale lithium-ion battery electrodes significantly as solvents are eliminated. Thus, in this study, solvent-free dry electrostatic spray deposition (ESD) and conventional slurry processes were compared to uncover the influence of the manufacturing process on thick LiNi 0.8Mn0.1Co 0.1O 2 (NMC 811) positive electrodes. More pressure during calendering was found necessary for the dry-made (dry) electrodes to have the same porosity, leading to more cracks within the NMC particles and better adhesion. At slower discharge rates, …

‘Marginal lands’ are low productivity sites abandoned from agriculture for reasons such as low or high soil water content, challenging topography, or nutrient deficiency. To avoid competition with crop production, cellulosic bioenergy crops have been proposed for cultivation on marginal lands, however on these sites they may be more strongly affected by environmental stresses such as low soil water content. In this study we used rainout shelters to induce low soil moisture on marginal lands and determine the effect of soil water stress on switchgrass growth and the subsequent production of bioethanol. Hydrogen (H2) production by steam methane reforming (SMR) is an economically viable technique on a commercial scale. However, this process produces large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2), which eventually negates the benefits of employing H2 as an industrial input and clean energy carrier. This issue has led to increasing interest in capturing CO2 emissions from SMR to produce H2. This study proposes and investigates the use of coalbed methane (CBM) resources for separating the mixture of H2 and CO2 gases. The competitive adsorption mechanism in CBM not only can separate the H2 gas from the mixture but also results into …
