To What Extent Does The European Debt Crisis Affect Both The European And The Global Economies, Amy Yi Huang 2013 University of Kentucky

To What Extent Does The European Debt Crisis Affect Both The European And The Global Economies, Amy Yi Huang

Lewis Honors College Capstone Collection

The goal of my research is to analyze the relationship between the 2007-2009 United States financial crisis and the ongoing European Sovereign Debt Crisis and the Debt Crisis’ possible effects on the global economy and to examine the different approaches to reduce the devastating effects of the European Debt Crisis.

First, I am going to analyze the relationship between the bursting of the US Housing Bubble and the European Debt Crisis. According to Robert Kolb (2011), a Finance professor at the University of Chicago, the bursting of the US Housing Bubble in 2007 that resulted in the 2007-2009 economic recession …

Investor Overconfidence And Option Trading, Han-Sheng Chen 2013 University of Texas at Arlington

Investor Overconfidence And Option Trading, Han-Sheng Chen

Finance and Real Estate Dissertations - Archive

This study examines investor overconfidence theory in the options market. The theory suggests that investors who experience high returns become overconfident in their security valuation and trading skills, and therefore trade more often, even when the high returns are market wide. Given stock investors often trade in both stock and options market, I hypothesize similar patterns could be found in the options market as well. Controlling for market volatility and stock idiosyncratic risk, past market return is positively correlated with option trading turnover. In addition, past positive market return leads to higher call option turnover ratio and higher call-to-put ratio. …

The Riai Standard Form Of Contract 2012 Edition: A Review, Tony Cunningham

Other Resources

The RIAI ‘yellow’ and ‘blue’ Forms of Contracts have been recently amended and published as the 2012 edition. The yellow form where quantities form part of the contract is identical to the 2011 edition and has been republished as the 2012 edition. The 2011 version superseded the 2002 version. This paper reviews and synopsises the provisions of the 2012 RIAI ‘yellow’ form of contract and identifies the principle changes to the 2002 edition.

Contested Real Estate Rezoning From A Game Theory And Stakeholder Analysis Perspective, Joseph M. Bradley, Patrick T. Hester 2013 Old Dominion University

Contested Real Estate Rezoning From A Game Theory And Stakeholder Analysis Perspective, Joseph M. Bradley, Patrick T. Hester

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Faculty Publications

Real estate developers may apply to re-zone a parcel of land when their development plan does not conform to the original zoning, or when economic conditions change and they decide that they need to revise their plan to one that is non-conforming. When the revised plan conflicts with the vision or values of other stakeholders (e.g. neighbors, local government), the real estate developer enters a decision process with both risk and uncertainty, while at the same time the affected stakeholders are placed in the reciprocal decision process. This process resembles a game with repeated plays as the developer and stakeholders …

This is Old Dominion University's 14th annual State of the Region report. While it represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, the report does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion or it's president, John R. Broderick. The report maintains the goal of stimulating thought and discussion that ultimately will make Hampton Roads an even better place to live. We are proud of our region's many successes, but realize that it is possible to improve our performance. In order to do so, we must have accurate information about "where we are" and a …

Hong Kong's Economic Freedom And Income Inequality, Emmett Choy 2013 Claremont McKenna College

Hong Kong's Economic Freedom And Income Inequality, Emmett Choy

CMC Senior Theses

Hong Kong is considered to be the most economically free country in the world, but also has the highest amount of income inequality of any developed country. The Hong Kong government is able to sustain laissez faire policies due to its monopoly on land supply. Maintaining high property values allows the government to maximize revenue from property tax, which acts as a hidden tax. A major contributor to income inequality is the formation of oligopolies in Hong Kong that creates an anticompetitive environment. The interests of the government and oligarchs are aligned as both obtain significant portions of revenue from …

Simulation Analysis Of The Blocking Effect Of Transaction Costs In China's Housing Market, Hong Zhang, Yue Wang, Yin Lin, Yang Zhang, Michael J. Seiler 2013 Old Dominion University

Simulation Analysis Of The Blocking Effect Of Transaction Costs In China's Housing Market, Hong Zhang, Yue Wang, Yin Lin, Yang Zhang, Michael J. Seiler

Finance Faculty Publications

To examine the blocking effect of transaction costs on household mobility, we construct a housing consumption model including transaction costs and adopt an analog simulation methodology, analyzing how changes in household income and home prices influence household consumption, savings decisions and the transaction costs blocking effect. We find that changes in housing demand are the fundamental cause of the blocking effect of transaction costs. The more demand changes, the greater the blocking effect is. Besides, increased volatility in home prices worsens the household mobility problem with regards to the blocking effect of transaction costs, while a change in household income …

Changes In The White-Black House Value Distribution Gap From 1997 To 2005, Eric FESSELMEYER, Kien T. LE, Kiat Ying SEAH 2013 Singapore Management University

Changes In The White-Black House Value Distribution Gap From 1997 To 2005, Eric Fesselmeyer, Kien T. Le, Kiat Ying Seah

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This paper examines the white-black house value gap across the entire value distribution. Instead of using standard conditional mean analysis and decomposition methods (via OLS regression), we estimate and decompose the changes in the white-black house value gap from 1997 to 2005 using quantile regression. We find that the racial gap in 1997 and 2005 is mostly explained by differences in housing characteristics of white- and black-owned houses but that the variation in the racial gap is explained by racial differences in implicit prices of housing characteristics. Our results show that analysis at the conditional mean masks variations at the …

Mega-Renters: Who Are They And How Do They Operate?, Stefan William Cosentino

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This dissertation investigates individuals who have acquired an extraordinary number of vacation ownership (timeshare) points or weeks and utilize their ownership for the purposes of generating income by renting their room reservations to the third parties. Individuals who operate in this context have been referred to as mega-renters on blogs such as the Timeshare Users Group website (Tug2.net), commonly referred to as Tug, which is an online forum where owners of timeshare share information about their ownership.

The timeshare or vacation ownership product is a leisure product that provides consumers luxury accommodations and or vacation experiences. Academic opinion based on …

Algorithmic Trading And Changes In Firms Equity Capital, Ekkehart Boehmer, Kingsley Fong, Julie Wu

We use a large sample from 2001 to 2009 that incorporates intraday transactions data from 39 exchanges and an average of 12,800 different common stocks to assess the effect of algorithmic trading (AT) on firms’ capital raising activities. Greater AT reduces net equity issues over the next year, but this is only partly driven by AT’s effect on proceeds from new securities issues. Our findings suggest that the main driver of this relationship is AT’s effect on share repurchases.

Sensitivity Studies Of A Low Temperature Low Approach Direct Cooling Tower For Building Radiant Cooling Systems, Medhi Nasrabadi, Donal Finn, Ben Costelloe 2012 University College Dublin

Sensitivity Studies Of A Low Temperature Low Approach Direct Cooling Tower For Building Radiant Cooling Systems, Medhi Nasrabadi, Donal Finn, Ben Costelloe

Conference Papers

Recent interest in cooling towers as a mechanism for producing chilled water, together with the evolution of radiant cooling, have prompted a review of evaporative cooling in temperate maritime climates. The thermal efficiency of such systems is a key parameter, as a measure of the degree to which the system has succeeded in exploiting the cooling potential of the ambient air. The feasibility of this concept depends largely however, on achieving low approach water temperatures within an appropriate cooling tower, at acceptable levels of energy performance. Previous experimental work for a full scale evaporative cooling system has shown that it …

Modelling Housing Prices And Credit Activity, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Together, the housing and banking sectors of any capitalist nation can play an important hand in determining its overall economic health. This is clear from studies of booms and busts in the United States over this past decade and in Japan about three decades ago. A new econometric model now attempts to make sense of large changes in housing prices with corresponding changes in credit volume. The model was presented at a research seminar organised by SMU's School of Economics.

Can The Next Housing – And Financial Crisis Be Averted?, Knowledge@SMU 2012 Singapore Management University

Can The Next Housing – And Financial Crisis Be Averted?, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

The costs of the subprime crisis are still being tabulated. Taxpayers of many countries are still being penalised unfairly as their governments stagger under the burden of bailing out banks poisoned by the burst of the real estate market. Regulators, including the US Fed, need to play a more active role in shaping and implementing policies that will include those meant for the real estate market. According to Wharton professor Susan Wachter, the tools needed for such effective policing are still in development. Nevertheless, the process of learning to avert the next such crisis is already underway.
