Asian Immigrants In Leadership Roles In The United States: Exploration For Leader Development, Ramil L. Cabela
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Cultural identity and resource availability aspects in traditional leadership development literature remain understudied, especially among minority populations like Asian immigrants.
This study explores the leadership journeys of 24 United States immigrants from China, India and the Philippines using a phenomenological approach, primarily with semi-structured interviews. Experiences of 18 additional immigrant leaders published in popular media were also analyzed.
Data from the study reveals that Asian migrants’ roads to leadership in U.S. organizations are heterogeneous and characterized by either linear or nonlinear, overlapping phases of leader development where migrant leaders overcome assimilation challenges and leverage their unique, individual human capital to …

The Market Impact Of The Appointment Of Female Directors In Listed Companies In New Zealand, Kuan Yong David Ding, Echo Su Chen
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study examines investor reaction to the appointment of female directors in New Zealand-listed companies. Using the event study method, we ϐind that female directors tend to be appointed as independent directors rather than in a Chief Executive Ofϐicer (CEO) role. The results reveal that female board appointments are generally negatively associated with stock performance. This study captures both the gender diversity arising in New Zealand companies and the performance of stock price resulting from the reaction of investors to the different positions of female directors. The evidence of a decrease in market performance is shown by the negative cumulative …

Increase Employee Engagement By Using The "Finding Joy At Work" Framework To Identify And Remedy Items That "Remove Joy" From Our Work Life, Anne-Marie Toderico, Heather Vickerson, Karen Waycott, Martine Eon, Joan Ingram, Gina Quinn-Skillings, May Robb
MaineHealth Corporate
Improving engagement scores within MaineHealth Corporate has been a focus for a number of years. The most recent data has shown a marked improvement from 2014 to 2017, moving us to the 49th percentile, but the MaineHealth goal is to bring us to the 75th percentile so there is still work to be done. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement offers training in “Finding and Creating Joy at Work”, a framework for identifying “pebbles in your shoes” that detract from your joy at work, finding and addressing the underlying root causes. We would like to use that framework to find and …

Suspicion At Work: The Impact On Counterproductive And Citizenship Behaviors, Johanna Capitano, Quinn W. Cunningham
Organization Management Journal
The purpose of this research was to examine the impact of state suspicion in the workplace, specifically, employee suspicion of managers, on counterproductive work behavior (CWB) and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). Data were obtained from a cross-sectional survey of 251 working adults (Study 1) and a vignette randomized experiment of 219 working adults (Study 2). Findings indicate that employees suspicious of their managers are more likely to engage in CWB and less likely to engage in OCB. These findings may help to focus practitioners’ attention on reducing workplace suspicion through open communication. Additionally, this research integrates the stressor–emotion model and …

Counterproductive Work Behaviors Toward Organization And Leader-Member Exchange: The Mediating Roles Of Emotional Exhaustion And Work Engagement, Mariana Lebron, Filiz Tabak, Or Shkoler, Edna Rabenu
Organization Management Journal
In this article, we develop and empirically test a model of antecedents of organizational counterproductive work behavior (CWB-O) specifying work engagement and emotional exhaustion as mediators of the relationship between leader–member exchange (LMX) and CWB-O. Our results show (a) that the relationship between LMX and organizational CWB-O is partially mediated by work engagement and (b) that the relationship between work engagement and CWB-O is partially mediated by emotional exhaustion. We discuss our findings and their implications for research and practice.

Exploring How Learning Style Relates To General And Career Management Self-Efficacy Beliefs In A Managerial Context, Yoshitaka Yamazaki, Michiko Toyama, Roby Syaiful Ubed
Organization Management Journal
This study examined how learning style relates to self-efficacy beliefs in a managerial context. To make a theoretical frame, the study relied on Kolb’s experiential learning theory and a model of self-efficacy–performance relationship proposed by Gist and Mitchell. The study analyzed not only general efficacy but also specific efficacy focused on career management. Participants of this study consisted of 235 managers who worked for the Ministry of Finance in Indonesia. Results showed that managers’ learning orientation towards abstract conceptualization over concrete experience was associated with increased self-efficacy beliefs, whereas an orientation towards active experimentation over reflective observation was associated with …

Does Employee Age Moderate The Association Between Hr Practices And Organizational Commitment? An Application Of Soc Theory To Organizational Behavior, Michael M. Mackay
Organization Management Journal
Drawing hypotheses from Selective Optimization with Compensation theory (SOC), we explored the degree to which employee age moderates the relationship between employees’ satisfaction with high-commitment human resource practices (HCHRPs; e.g., providing training, work–life balance) and organizational commitment. Customer-facing employees (N = 6,360) from an international transportation company completed the Organizational Commitment Questionnaire (OCQ) and rated their satisfaction with various HCHRPs offered by their organization. Results show that although there was a strong overall correlation between organizational commitment and satisfaction with various HCHRPs (r = .66), employee age was a significant moderator of only the relationships between organizational commitment and maintenance-related …

The following research paper is intended to address the worker classification issue that has intensified due to the rise of the gig economy. After reviewing the current literature on the subject, it will be made clear that a change must be made to the binary classification system that is used in the United States, and to the methods used to categorize workers within the system. This paper proposes the addition of a ‘dependent contractor’ category, which would be a subcategory of employee, and would fall between independent contractor and employee in terms of what benefits they would be entitled to. …

The Group Dynamics module focuses on informing students about inter/intra group interactions, while also demonstrating the role of an individual within a group. As individuals become a part of a group, they lose a certain distinction between their personal identity and their group personality, or prototype. Individuals become part of a social categorization and comparison, and require the skills of empathy and relations to successfully communicate with not only their ingroup, but also their outgroup. An absence of awareness of the feelings around them can develop the negative effects of groupthink, as individual ideas are unheard. As fitting into the …
