Exploring The Impact Of Information And Communication Technology (Ict) On Intermediation Market Structure In The Microfinance Industry, Frederick Riggins, David Weber
The African Journal of Information Systems
The microfinance industry provides financial services to the world’s poor in hopes of moving individuals and families out of poverty. In 2013 there were 4.7 million active microfinance borrowers in Africa. This represents a smaller percentage of the population compared to other regions of the world, indicating the potential for rapid growth of microfinance in Africa. However, microfinance is maturing, in part due to the adoption of information and communication technologies (ICTs). This research examines how ICTs are changing the microfinance industry given recent advancements in mobile banking, Internet usage, and connectivity. By examining the microfinance market structure, we determine …

Procurement With Reverse Auction And Flexible Noncompetitive Contracts, Sean X. Zhou, Zhijie Tao, Nianbing Zhang, Gangshu (George) Cai
Information Systems and Analytics
This article investigates a hybrid procurement mechanism that combines a reverse auction with flexible noncompetitive contracts. A buyer adopts such mechanism to procure multiple units of a product from a group of potential suppliers. Specifically, the buyer first offers contracts to some suppliers who, if accepting the contract, do not participate in the auction while committing to selling a unit to the buyer at the price of the subsequent auction. For the suppliers rejecting the offers, they can join the subsequent auction with the other suppliers to compete on the remaining units. When the buyer offers only one flexible noncompetitive …

Proposal For Two Model Undergraduate Curricula In Entrepreneurship, Jerome A. Katz, Ralph C. Hanke, Fred Maidment, K. Mark Weaver, Sharon Alpi
Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper takes three important preliminary steps towards the development of undergraduate curricula in entrepreneurship. First, it provides one of the first analyses comparing the entrepreneurship education standards proposed by the Consortium for Entrepreneurship Education and the European Commission's Education and Training in Entrepreneurship initiative. Next, it presents an analysis of results of a workshop of entrepreneurship educators regarding development of an undergraduate entrepreneurship standard for business schools. With these two elements in place, the paper makes recommendations for model undergraduate entrepreneurship curricula for majors and concentrations and concludes with a discussion of the issues in developing and implementing model …

Collaborative Development Of A Small Business Emergency Planning Model, Arthur Henry Hendela
Dissertations
Small businesses, which are defined by the US Small Business Administration as entities with less than 500 employees, suffer interruptions from diverse risks such as financial events, legal situations, or severe storms exemplified by Hurricane Sandy. Proper preparations can help lessen the length of the interruption and put employees and owners back to work. Large corporations generally have large budgets available for planning, business continuity, and disaster recovery. Small businesses must decide which risks are the most important and how best to mitigate those risks using minimal resources.
This research uses a series of surveys followed by mathematical modeling to …

Mediating Chance Encounters Through Opportunistic Social Matching, Julia M. Mayer
Dissertations
Chance encounters, the unintended meeting between people unfamiliar with each other, serve as an important social lubricant helping people to create new social ties, such as making new friends or finding an activity, study or collaboration partner. Unfortunately, social barriers often prevent chance encounters in environments where people do not know each other and people have to rely on serendipity to meet or be introduced to interesting people around them. Little is known about the underlying dynamics of chance encounters and how systems could utilize contextual data to mediate chance encounters. This dissertation addresses this gap in research literature by …

BACKGROUND: PubMed is a widely used database for scientists to find biomedical-related literature. Due to the complexity of the selected research subject and its interdisciplinary nature, as well as the exponential growth in the number of disparate pieces of biomedical literature, it is an overwhelming challenge for scientists to define the right search strategies and quickly locate all related information. Specialized subsets and groupings of controlled vocabularies, such as Medical Subject Headings (MeSH), can enhance information retrieval in specialized domains, such as stem cell research. There is a need to develop effective search strategies and convenient solutions for knowledge organization …

Investigation Of Supply Chain Governance Mechanisms And Assessing Their Effect On Supply Chain Performance In The Manufacturing Industry, Nisha Paul Kulangara
Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive
With the increasing level of globalization in manufacturing, it is becoming increasingly pertinent to monitor the execution of contractual agreements between buyers and suppliers. These monitoring mechanisms are essential to mitigate risks associated with measurement difficulty, behavioral uncertainty, and environmental uncertainty. Drawing from transaction cost theory and resource dependence theory, this study illustrates frequently applied formal and relational governance mechanisms to ensure a successful supply chain partnership and its effects on various performance measures such as supply chain and innovation performance. Most firms go through three stages of a relationship, namely-contact, contract, and control (Greenberg, Greenberg, and Antonucci, 2012). Once …

Honors Projects
This honors project involved applying two disciplines to aid in advancing the efficiency of airport management at the Toledo Express Airport. I utilized my geography and aviation knowledge and geographic information system (GIS) skills to create a GIS, a webmap, and a 3-in-1 map-based program that had the capabilities of executing Part 139 Self Inspections, asset management, and work orders. The GIS system and webmap were successfully created to aid in management, cohesiveness, and efficiency within the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority, the managing entity of the Toledo Express Airport. For the 3-in-1 map-based program, I worked closely alongside a programmer …

The Town of Spencer came to us looking for a plan to build and maintain their own personal fiber network for connection between departments and to improve data security for important information. After assessing the existing landscape and determining the various paths forward, we created network diagrams and plans for the movement forward of this project.
After assessing a variety of plans, we found that a full single-mode fiber network would be the best system for the implementation in Spencer. While it was the highest cost, it also scored the highest in our assessment.

Models For Storing Relationships: Relational Vs. Graph Databases, Dylan Hantula
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Relational databases have been the universal industry standard for almost as long as databases have existed. While relational databases are undoubtedly useful for storing tabular data that fits into a pre-defined schema of rows and columns, they are not very accommodating of interconnections within a data set. Forcing a highly connected data set into a relational database commonly results in severe performance issues in query return time. With the recent rise of social networks and other modern technological advancements, data is quickly becoming more connected and thus less suitable for relational databases. As a result, a new type of database, …
