Communications of the IIMA

This paper investigates cultural differences between Chinese and American project managers in the IT industry through a pilot study of interviewing six professional project managers with qualitative and quantitative questions. The interview questions were developed to compare core Chinese values and cultural styles with American cultural styles. Initial results found that Chinese and American project managers in the IT industry have similar ideas regarding resistance to corruption but have differences toward the idea of trustworthiness, harmony, avoiding confrontation, and non- competition.

Opioid Adjunct Drug Therapy: Evaluating Effectiveness Using Text Analytics Of Real World Data, Michael Veronin, Robert P. Schumaker 2020 The University of Texas at Tyler

Opioid Adjunct Drug Therapy: Evaluating Effectiveness Using Text Analytics Of Real World Data, Michael Veronin, Robert P. Schumaker

Communications of the IIMA

Opioid analgesics continue to be the mainstay of pharmacologic treatment of moderate to severe pain. An adjunct is a drug that in its pharmacological characteristic is not identified primarily as an analgesic, but that has been found in clinical practice to have either an independent analgesic effect or additive analgesic properties when used with opioids. By using an adjunct to maximize the level of analgesia, the required opioid dosage may be reduced, together with concomitant adverse effects. BACKGROUND Real World Data (RWD) refers to data that describe observations in normal clinical practice obtained by any non- interventional methodology, such as …

Marketers in the 21st century now more than ever face a competitive business environment. The battle for marketers to to capture value from customers across a variety of verticals in the form of brand equity and sales is as fierce as it has ever been. This is because customers have numerous choices partially driven by the access and information provided by the internet (Solomon, 2017). As such, consumers are exposed to a plethora of alternative products and services more than ever as compared to the past. As such, consumers apply a high level of effect in the market about several …

Cyberbullying Among University Students: The Kenyan Experience, Joshua R A Ndiege, Gabriel Okello, Patrick K. Wamuyu

The African Journal of Information Systems

Although considerable literature has grown around cyberbullying, there are still only limited studies on this within developing economies, especially African countries. In particular, studies on cyberbullying in Africa have failed to have a direct focus on the prevalence of this phenomenon among students in universities. Not only does cyberbullying have an emotional-social impact, it has ramifications on the learning process as well. This subject remains of utmost relevance within academia, and a number of institutions continue to grapple with its impact. The study reported here is an exploratory investigation of 396 students from one of the private universities within Nairobi, …

Chronic Disease Management: How It And Analytics Create Healthcare Value Through The Temporal Displacement Of Care, Steve M. Thompson, Johnathan Whitaker, Rajiv Kohli, Craig Jones 2020 University of Richmond

Chronic Disease Management: How It And Analytics Create Healthcare Value Through The Temporal Displacement Of Care, Steve M. Thompson, Johnathan Whitaker, Rajiv Kohli, Craig Jones

Finance Faculty Publications

The treatment of chronic diseases consumes 86% of U.S. healthcare costs. While healthcare organizations have traditionally focused on treating the complications of chronic diseases, advances in information technology (IT) and analytics can help clinicians and patients manage and slow the progression of chronic diseases to result in higher quality of life for patients and lower healthcare costs.

We build on prior research to introduce the notion of temporal displacement of care (TDC), in which IT and analytics create healthcare value by displacing the time at which providers and patients make interventions to improve healthcare outcomes and reduce costs. We propose …

Implementing The Malcolm Baldrige Process For A Financial Institution: An Insiders Perspective, Scott Murray

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The Malcolm Baldrige Framework for Performance Excellence outlines best practices for strategic and operational processes. Enterprises that achieve the award do so not for the award itself – but for the transformation that takes place along the way. Although the fifty-page summaries of Malcolm Baldrige award winning organizations are posted on the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) (https://www.nist.gov/baldrige/award-recipients), the process and effort used to create such applications has not been documented. This project documents and provides an internal perspective and lessons learned from the early stages of the Malcolm Baldrige journey for a medium size financial institution. The …

Information Systems and Analytics Department Faculty Journal Articles

With the imminent need of regional environmental protection and sustainable economic development, the concept of virtual water is widely used to solve the problem of regional water shortage. In this paper, nine provinces, namely Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu, Ningxia, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Shanxi, Henan, and Shandong in the Yellow River Basin (YRB), are taken as the research objects. Through the analysis of input-output tables of 30 provinces in China in 2012, the characteristics of virtual water trade in this region are estimated by using a multi-regional input-output (MRIO) model. The results show that: (1) The YRB had a net inflow of …

Value Added Fed And Feeder Cattle Practices: Are They Paying?, Elliott James Dennis 2020 University of Nebraska - Lincoln

Value Added Fed And Feeder Cattle Practices: Are They Paying?, Elliott James Dennis

Extension Farm and Ranch Management News

Summary

Some value added management programs clearly pay more than others and some do not pay at all. However, just like with a breeding or forage management strategy where not every year the cow gets bred back or the grass has sufficient protein, a value added program strategies premiums vary year to year. Switching the way cattle are managed and raised, handled, and fed requires planning and an understanding of labor and management capabilities. Not every cattle producer could or even should switch management practices an animal health protocol – even if premiums do exist. Thus, careful planning and consideration …

Idea Co-Creation On Social Media Platforms: Towards A Theory Of Social Ideation, Pratyush Bharati, Kui Du, Abhijit Chaudhury, Narendra M. Agrawal

Information Systems and Analytics Department Faculty Journal Articles

Innovation scholars have long been discussing social media as a rich source of information, knowledge, and new ideas, yet, whether or how social media can directly intervene with organizational ideation processes remains unclear. In this study, we investigate the impact of external and enterprise social media platforms on organizational ideation. Grounded in seventy-nine cases and adapting social capital theory in social media contexts, this study attempts to develop a theory of social ideation. Social ideation consists of social media-enabled mechanisms that generate social capital, enable multi-level social exchanges, foster idea co-creation activities such as idea sourcing, filtering, elaboration, and integration, …

Journal of Appalachian Health

A meta-analysis of oncology papers from around the world revealed that cancer patients who lived more than 50 miles away from hospital centers routinely presented with more advanced stages of disease at diagnosis, exhibited lower adherence to prescribed treatments, presented with poorer diagnoses, and reported a lower quality of life than patients who lived nearer to care facilities. Connected health approaches—or the use of broadband and telecommunications technologies to evaluate, diagnose, and monitor patients beyond the clinic—are becoming an indispensable tool in medicine to overcome the obstacle of distance.

Growth in urban areas often leads to problems such as increased traffic congestion and poor air quality. To help alleviate these issues, shared mobility networks have been launched in hundreds of cities worldwide to provide citizens with alternatives to personal autos and to other less sustainable methods of transport (Fishman, 2016; Zhang et al., 2015). Shared mobility includes carsharing, ridesharing, scooter sharing and bikesharing (SAE, 2018). Bikeshare programs allow users to pick up bicycles (often at hub locations), utilize the bicycle for a journey, and return it to a location within the system (DeMaio, 2009). While bicycle sharing has been …

Divergent Student Views Of Cybersecurity, Susan E. Ramlo, John B. Nicholas

Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice

Cybersecurity is a worldwide issue and concern. Prior studies indicate that many people do not use cybersecurity best practices. Although these prior studies used large-scale surveys or interviews, this study used Q methodology [Q] because Q provides greater insight than Likert-format surveys. In fact, Q was created to scientifically study subjectivity. Within a Q study, various stages as well as philosophical, epistemological, and ontological principles represent a complete methodology. At first, Q researchers collect items that represent the broad range of communications about the topic (called the concourse). Although the items can be pictures, scents, or other means of communication, …

This study examines how the Twittersphere talked about candidates running for the U.S senate in the 2018 congressional elections. We classify Twitter users as Liberal or Conservative to better understand how the two groups use social media during a major national political election. Using tweet sentiment, we assess how the Twittersphere felt about in-group party versus out-group party candidates. When we further break these findings down based on the candidates’ gender, we find that male senatorial candidates were talked about more positively than female candidates. We also find that Conservatives talked more positively about female Republican candidates than they did …

Migrating From Monoliths To Cloud-Based Microservices: A Banking Industry Example, Alan Megargel, Venky Shankararaman, David K. Walker

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

As more organizations are placing cloud computing at the heart of their digital transformation strategy, it is important that they adopt appropriate architectures and development methodologies to leverage the full benefits of the cloud. A mere “lift and move” approach, where traditional monolith applications are moved to the cloud will not support the demands of digital services. While, monolithic applications may be easier to develop and control, they are inflexible to change and lack the scalability needed for cloud environments. Microservices architecture, which adopts some of the concepts and principles from service-oriented architecture, provides a number of benefits when developing …

How Facets Of Work Illuminate Sociotechnical Challenges Of Industry 5.0, Steven Alter 2020 University of San Francisco

How Facets Of Work Illuminate Sociotechnical Challenges Of Industry 5.0, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

This conceptual contribution explains how the idea of “facets of work” can refocus traditional sociotechnical concerns to increase their relevance in increasingly automated and digitalized workplaces far removed from situations studied by early sociotechnical researchers. A background section summarizes how the sociotechnical approach seems pervasive but possibly outdated in some ways. It explains how the idea of “facets of work” emerged from attempting to bring richer, more evocative ide-as to systems analysis and design. Focusing on facets of work during initial discussions of requirements could provide guidance without jumping prematurely to precision and notation needed for producing technical artifacts. Tables …

Applying Facets Of Work As A Source Of Knowledge And Insight For Requirements Determination, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

This conceptual contribution explains how the idea of “facets of work” can bring more knowledge and richer, more evocative ideas to the development of system requirements in organizational settings. Focusing on facets of work potentially provides useful guidance without requiring unnecessary details, precision, and notation. A background section summarizes how the current research emerged from partial overlaps between separate research efforts. Table 1 identifies 18 facets of work. Five other tables look at a subset of the facets to illustrate concepts associated with specific facets, common success factors and tradeoffs, sub-facets and other topics. Use of the same subset of …
