Are Healthcare Stocks A Safe Haven During Covid-19? : An Analysis Of Stock Return And Sector Segmentation Across Developed And Emerging Markets, Attani Tuwatchai

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study examines whether the healthcare sector functioned as a safe haven during the COVID-19 pandemic by analyzing its time-varying correlation with major market indices across developed and emerging economies. Utilizing a multi-method approach—centered on the DCC-GARCH model and supported by OLS regression—the research investigates how health crises and public policy responses influenced sector-level market dynamics. The analysis focuses on three main areas: the evolution of correlation structures before and during the pandemic, the influence of pandemic-related factors on correlation strength, and differences between developed and emerging markets. Although a Probit model was initially applied to estimate the likelihood of …

Money Doesn’T Grow On Trees: How Financial Literacy Is Learned And Developed Within American Childhood, Nate Lewis

Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research

Financial literacy refers to the ability to process and utilize economic information to make informed decisions for their wellbeing. Given concerning indicators of financial outcomes within the United States, it is crucial to understand how and when strong financial behavior is developed. Efforts to enhance financial education have explored incorporating financial concepts into children’s literature and games. Yet, research indicates that financial literacy is far more rooted in the habits learned from one’s family, despite the emphasis often placed on schooling and socioeconomic status. It is therefore evident that efforts to promote financial literacy must always involve empowering family members …

Confronting Ai-Induced Power Disparity And Emotional Disruption: Expansive Duties Of Broker-Dealers And Investment Advisers, Shuping Li, Wei Shen 2024 Peking University Law School

Confronting Ai-Induced Power Disparity And Emotional Disruption: Expansive Duties Of Broker-Dealers And Investment Advisers, Shuping Li, Wei Shen

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

The increasing use of AI models in investment services has raised concerns about ineffective responses, power disparity, and investor harm caused by emotional disruption. Generative AI-driven investment service providers often fail to address consumer issues quickly, guiding customers through superfluous and meaningless verbiage or professional terminology in infinite loops without providing an option to talk with a human customer service staff. Customers who are “stuck” in ineffective or inaccurate responses from AI agents may waste time for investors, make poor investment or trading decisions, and the platform may profit from investor rational decision-making owing to investors’ emotional disruption.

Ceo Marital Status And Corporate Cash Holdings, Ahmed M. Elnahas, Md Noman Hossain, Siamak Javadi 2024 The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

Ceo Marital Status And Corporate Cash Holdings, Ahmed M. Elnahas, Md Noman Hossain, Siamak Javadi

Finance Faculty Publications

We examine the effect of CEO marital status on corporate cash holdings. Consistent with the classical agency framework, we find that firms with single CEOs hold more cash compared to otherwise similar firms with married CEOs and that the excess cash held by single CEOs is significantly discounted by shareholders. Our findings survive a battery of tests to ease endogeneity and selection bias, confirming that results are not simply reflecting innate heterogeneity in preferences. Overall, our findings indicate that a variable outside the common firm- and macro-level determinants, CEO marital status, can significantly influence corporate policies.

Credit Risk Correlation And The Cost Of Bank Loans, Siamak Javadi, Theophilus T. Osah 2024 The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley

Credit Risk Correlation And The Cost Of Bank Loans, Siamak Javadi, Theophilus T. Osah

Finance Faculty Publications

Using several approaches to compute firms’ credit risk correlation, we provide robust empirical evidence that lenders charge higher loan spreads to borrowers with higher credit risk correlation. Consistent with the theoretical literature, we find that the credit risk correlation effect is concentrated in investment-grade firms, driven by tightening lending conditions, and more pronounced for firms with higher rollover risk. We also show that banks whose borrowers have higher average credit risk correlation, have greater default risk themselves. Overall, our results indicate that banks view credit risk correlation as an important risk factor.

Three Essays On Financial Information, Disclosures, And Ethics, Ankit Kapur 2024 University of Texas at Arlington

Three Essays On Financial Information, Disclosures, And Ethics, Ankit Kapur

Finance and Real Estate Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation aims to study the impact of different sources of financial information and corporate policies on outcomes that are relevant to researchers, regulators, finance professionals, financial institutions, and investors.

In the first essay, I show that credit rating change announcements disclose a new form of value-relevant information to the market. Issuer credit rating downgrades (upgrades) inform the market about equity underpricing (overpricing). This is reflected by a significant association between a firm’s downgrade (upgrade) and increase (decrease) in the anomalous stock underpricing (overpricing). Furthermore, I show how this mispricing gets corrected over time by analyzing the returns after the …

Three Essays On Investment Decisions And Stock Price Crash Risk, Andi Li

Finance and Real Estate Dissertations - Archive

My dissertation explores two main themes: institutional investors' investment decisions and stock price crash risk. The first essay analyzes how institutional investors manage their portfolios in the context of economic policy uncertainty. The second essay examines the effect of employee ownership on a firm's stock price crash risk, while the third essay investigates how the concentration of institutional ownership affects the stock price crash risk.

My first essay investigates the impact of economic policy uncertainty on institutional investors’ holdings of common stocks. Using a large sample of quarterly institutional ownership data from 28 countries/markets between 2000 and 2021, I find …

Exploring Links Between Foreign Direct Investment And Host Country Economic Development, Thi Ngoc Dao 2024 Technological University Dublin

Exploring Links Between Foreign Direct Investment And Host Country Economic Development, Thi Ngoc Dao

Doctoral

The thesis explores links between Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and the economic development of host country, analysing both direct and indirect effects. Concerning direct effects, FDI has been recognised as an important driver of exports and job creation for the host country. In terms of indirect effects, however, a consensus has not been reached on the spillover effects and competition effects that FDI generates in indigenous firms. Evaluating these effects has been critical for small open economies due to their heavy reliance on external markets and factors. There is a need for comprehensive research investigating the impacts of FDI on …

Do Networks Matter In Real Estate? Real Estate Agent Performance Through Network Analysis, Ani Khachatryan 2024 University of Texas at Arlington

Do Networks Matter In Real Estate? Real Estate Agent Performance Through Network Analysis, Ani Khachatryan

Finance and Real Estate Dissertations - Archive

The role of real estate agents as intermediaries in property transactions is well-established. However, the extent to which their positioning within professional networks influences transaction outcomes remains to be discovered. Drawing inspiration from network theory, this dissertation explores the relationship between real estate agent networks and performance metrics. Using a comprehensive dataset of Tarrant County, Texas, MLS transactions spanning 2002-2022, I test how agent network size and position relate to the property sale price and time on the market (TOM). The analyses suggest that network positioning could be pivotal in determining transactional outcomes. This study promises to fill a gap …

Do Regulatory Announcements Still Cause Price Volatility? : A Pre- And Post-Msr Analysis Of The Eu Ets, Pornnapat Kuleung

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This study examines whether the introduction of the Market Stability Reserve (MSR) has changed how the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) responds to regulatory policy announcements affecting EUA supply and demand. Using event study and volatility analysis, it compares 81 events across Pre-MSR (before 2019) and Post-MSR (after 2019) periods.Cumulative abnormal returns (CARs) are estimated via a mean-adjusted model and tested using Welch’s t-test. Volatility is assessed through a GARCH(1,1) model, with structural differences evaluated using a Likelihood Ratio Test and a bootstrap test.Findings show that the MSR has reduced overreaction and volatility in specific contexts—particularly during recurring supply-related …

Revolutionizing Lithium Extraction: Analysis Of Factors Affecting Commercialization Timelines With Insights From The Shale Gas Boom, Bilge Tayyar

CMC Senior Theses

This study draws parallels between Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) and hydraulic fracturing to highlight the transformative potential of DLE technology in the lithium industry. The comparative analysis supports the hypothesis that DLE might expedite commercialization timelines, similar to the effect hydraulic fracturing has had on traditional shale gas extraction. The study includes a regression analysis to determine the factors affecting the commercialization of conventional lithium brine extraction methods, thereby better understanding the potential changes DLE will create. The regression model, based on data from 11 projects, examines the impact of variables such as temperature range, tax rates, royalty rates, regulatory …

Taming The Digital Wild West: The Need To Fully Regulate The Crypto Market, Shawn Stevenson

Lewis & Clark Law Review

Despite past doubts from sophisticated investors, cryptocurrencies have fully emerged from the underground and become a hot topic in mainstream financial discussions. At its peak, the global crypto market possessed a market cap of nearly $3 trillion, with the vast amount of that value created in less than two years. But this rapid growth has also come with extreme volatility; now more than a year out from that peak, the global crypto market has shrunk to under $1 trillion and has been riddled by high-profile bankruptcies. On top of this extreme volatility, the largely unregulated crypto market has become an …

The computer usage among office workers had increased tremendously in past recent years and the surge in computer usage has created a surge in work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) on arm, neck, and shoulder. For prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms in relation to gender and age, females had higher risk and prevalence of upper limb complaints and the prevalence of WRMSDs generally increases with age. Systematic review studies had reported effectiveness of various physical activity (PA) interventions on improvements of upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders (UEMSDs) or neck pain for office workers. However, the degree of adherence of PA interventions with WHO guidelines …

Artificial Intelligence In Stock Analysis And Portfolio Building, Sean M. Lynch 2024 University of New Hampshire, Durham

Artificial Intelligence In Stock Analysis And Portfolio Building, Sean M. Lynch

Honors Theses and Capstones

The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) investment analysts, often referred to as “robo-advisors”, has the potential to change traditional portfolio management. These systems access vast amounts of data and make portfolio management decisions and stock market predictions. In this study, I compared AI-generated portfolios with portfolios that were created manually. Surprisingly, the human-generated portfolios outperformed the AI portfolios. However, the prompt used in the AI application affects these results. The subset of AI portfolios that were created with specific objectives specified in the prompts outperformed those that were created with more generic prompts. Overall, this research sheds light on the …
