This paper replicates the paper named Human capital, capital structure, and employee pay: An empirical analysis written by Thomas J. Chemmanur, Yingmei Cheng, and Tianming Zhang in 2013. In this paper, I examine the effect of market leverage on labor expenses to prove the predictions of Titman (1984) and Berk, Stanton, and Zechner (2010). Through the OLS regression analysis, I find that market leverage has a significantly positive effect on total, cash, equity-based compensation of chief executive officers (CEOs). So an increase market leverage will always lead to an incremental labor cost, and in fact labor costs will limit the …

Honors Theses
This study analyzed the financial literacy of students in the College of Business versus that of students in other colleges at the University of Southern Mississippi. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between demographic characteristics, financial literacy, and financial experience. The financial literacy of the students was assessed using a selection of questions from the Jump$tart Coalition Survey of Personal Financial Literacy. The financial literacy of the students was determined based upon the number of questions answered correctly on the survey; however, there was no passing or failing number. Instead, each demographic group was said to …

An Exploration Of Income Characteristics: Analyzing Targets And Acquirers In Banking Mergers And Acquisitions, Stephanie S. Simpson
Honors College Theses
With the large number of bank mergers occurring from 1990 to 2007, it is useful to know why acquirers chose to merge with these targeted entities. This research analyzes the income characteristics of targets and acquirers for this period to determine any indicators that distinguish an acquirer’s income structure from a target’s. To do this, income statement items from these banking entities are examined using factors such as size, serial or nonserial classification, and (for the targets only) public or private status. The research concludes that acquirers and targets indeed attain different income, cost, and efficiency characteristics.

Reducing costs and improving quality are two of the most important goals in managing healthcare operations. In this study, we explore how to improve healthcare operations by integrating Just-in-Time (JIT) management system. We first introduce the JIT management system, and then discuss how it can generate benefits in healthcare operations. We investigate implications for healthcare practice, which include how JIT techniques can be applied to healthcare operations, how hospitals and general practices can use JIT techniques, how JIT can help the patient throughput rate, and how technological advances can speed up healthcare processes. Implications for management and directions for future …

This study analyzes the relationship between the promoters of human capital and performance of an unregulated microfinance institution (IMNR) in Peru in 2009. A cross-sectional study was conducted using the survey Human Capital Management (HCM, for its acronym in English ) by Bassi and McMurrer (2007) for the Community Banks program of the nongovernmental organization (NGO) ADRA Peru's workers. The results of a multiple linear regression analysis showed that the motivators of practices of leadership and learning ability are related to operational sustainability and productivity of credit execution. The variable “Leadership practices” consists of five factors: communication, inclusion, supervisory skills, …

Treasury Inflation Protected Securities, or TIPS, offer investors a lower coupon rate; however, in exchange, investors receive protection against the negative impact of inflation. Higher inflation leads to a loss in purchasing power, as well as higher interest rates, which reduce bond prices. The inflation protection offered by TIPS offsets these impacts by increasing the face value (called the accrued principal) in line with inflation, meaning that periodic coupon payments rise with inflation, as does the return of principal at maturity. See this Bloomberg article for a discussion of why TIPS are back in favor.

How does the F-35 Lightning II multirole fighter compare to current military airplanes in terms of costs and capabilities? This is a comparison study based around the F-35 and five other planes. The F-35 is chosen because of its status as an ongoing project and due to its controversy as a plane. This study looks at all values. It is completely numeric based allowing for objective analysis. These planes chosen for study are the F-16 C/D, F/A-18 E/F, F-22A, AV-8B Harrier II, and A-10C. These planes are chosen because the F-35 is meant to replace them in the case of …

Happiness & Accounting/Finance Careers, Jacob Shrode
Celebrating Scholarship & Creativity Day (2011-2017)
The research question I chose was "Do happiness levels vary among graduates with accounting majors who have chosen different career paths?" The method I used to get my data was a survey. Overall, the average happiness score from my survey was 4.72/6 (see table 4). The average happiness score in the U.S. is only 4.30. I did a t-test for this and got a p value of .00. With this, I can say that there is substantial evidence to suggest that people who graduate with accounting/finance majors tend to be significantly happier than the average U.S. person.

Long-Term U.S. Cross-Border Security Flows With Developed And Emerging Market Countries Surrounding The Global Financial Crisis, Caitlin Tongco
Honors College Theses
This paper analyzes the impact of the global financial crisis on cross-border long-term security flows from and towards the U.S. We are investigating monthly observations from 72 countries over the period from 2003 to 2013. The findings show that the global financial crisis impacted all cross-border capital flows in our analysis; yet, the timing, the significance, and the nature of the impact varies among the different securities, as well as between a sample of developed and emerging market countries. We find evidence for a flight-to-safety with the start of the global financial crisis, with a significant, but short lived interruption …

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigates how organizational learning, absorptive capacity, cultural integration, specialization of the acquired firm and characteristics of transferred knowledge impact innovation performance subsequent to overseas acquisitions.
Design/methodology/approach
Survey responses from 222 Chinese multinational enterprises engaged in overseas acquisitions.
Findings
Differences between acquiring and acquired firms’ capabilities, while having a positive direct influence, suppress the positive impact of organizational learning and absorptive capacity, suggesting that multinationals require some basic level of capabilities to appropriate value from overseas acquisitions.
Research limitations/implications
This paper investigates the impact of knowledge-seeking overseas acquisition of Chinese multinationals on innovation …

ETFs are designed to track a particular underlying index. As these "baskets" of securities are traded, excessive demand or supply of shares can cause a disparity between the price of the ETF and the underlying value of securities held. However, because of the ability of large institutions to trade directly with the ETF firm to create and redeem shares, arbitrage keeps prices in line. See article here, WSJ.

Purpose
– This study is a replication of Wolff and Reed’s (2000) work. The purpose of this paper is to examine how the combination of resources brought to joint ventures influence parent-firm performance. This study is also interested in whether or not the exposure of immobile resources through the semi-transparent membrane of the joint venture can have negative effects on parent-firm performance.
Design/methodology/approach
– The sample consists of two-parent joint ventures formed by publicly traded US firms between 1997 and 2013. The event-study methodology is used to calculate each parent-firm’s abnormal returns. This work also uses content analysis to analyze …

How Financial Literacy Affects Budgeting Behaviors, Haowen Yuan
Student Scholarship - College of Business
A survey was administered at a private, liberal arts university in the Pacific Northwest to discover how financial literacy can have an impact on students budgeting behaviors. Respondents were asked different kinds of financial literacy questions to assess how much they knew about financial knowledge, and respondents were asked financial behaviors questions to analyze the relationship between financial literacy and financial behaviors. Other questions included demographics, math ability, education, and personal discernment. I find that the only factor that affects students budgeting behaviors is their year in college. When students stay at the school for a long period of time, …

Anchoring Bias, Idiosyncratic Volatility And The Cross-Section Of Stock Returns, Cedric Tresor Luma Mbanga
Doctoral Dissertations
Ang, Hodrick, Xing and Zhang (2006) document an anomaly in the cross-section of stock returns. They show that high idiosyncratic volatility (IVOL) firms earn lower returns in the following month. Specifically, they find after sorting stocks in quintile portfolios based on the previous month's IVOL that a zero-investment portfolio long the most volatile quintile of stocks and short the least yields about -1% during the subsequent month. The evidence reported in Ang, Hodrick, Xing and Zhang (2006) is primarily puzzling because traditional asset pricing theories suggest that (i) only systematic risk should be priced, (ii) to the extent that markets …

A Pure-Jump Market-Making Model For High-Frequency Trading, Chi Wai Law
Open Access Dissertations
We propose a new market-making model which incorporates a number of realistic features relevant for high-frequency trading. In particular, we model the dependency structure of prices and order arrivals with novel self- and cross-exciting point processes. Furthermore, instead of assuming the bid and ask prices can be adjusted continuously by the market maker, we formulate the market maker's decisions as an optimal switching problem. Moreover, the risk of overtrading has been taken into consideration by allowing each order to have different size, and the market maker can make use of market orders, which are treated as impulse control, to get …
