Notice Risk And Registered Agency, Andrew K. Jennings 2020 Emory University School of Law

Notice Risk And Registered Agency, Andrew K. Jennings

Faculty Articles

To sue a firm is to sue an artificial person, making the most reliable service method—physically handing papers to the defendant—unusable. This problem illustrates notice risk: if a plaintiff’s service obligations are loose, it is advantaged (because the defendant may never receive notice), whereas if they are strict, the defendant is advantaged (because the plaintiff may struggle to effect service). For litigation involving corporate defendants, civil procedure and corporate law mitigate this problem through a technology for managing notice risk: registered agency. A firm using this technology, because it cannot be served directly, appoints an agent who will accept papers …

African American Women Bloggers’ Lived Experiences With Digital Entrepreneurship: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Melissa McDowell 2020 Walden University

African American Women Bloggers’ Lived Experiences With Digital Entrepreneurship: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study, Melissa Mcdowell

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The professionalization of blogs has elevated blogging to an organizational field whereby bloggers develop a legitimate career path. For many minority women bloggers, the transition from being traditionally employed to managing a one-person digital enterprise is often met with racial and gender imbalances created by nontraditional modes of work. The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study was to gain a deeper understanding of how African American women bloggers described their lived experiences with managing a one-person digital enterprise and the implications of their racial and gender identity within this nontraditional mode of work. To address this gap, a transcendental …

On Effectuation And Networks: Three Essays On Their Mutuality, Jon Kerr 2020 Wilfrid Laurier University

On Effectuation And Networks: Three Essays On Their Mutuality, Jon Kerr

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The notion of co-creating opportunities positions effectuation as both a network-driving and network-dependent phenomenon. On one hand, networks are products of relational interactions and, therefore, artefactual outcomes of effectual processes. On the other hand, it would seem that understanding networks and network processes is essential to understanding effectuation. Although past research acknowledges this mutuality, recent discourse highlights that our understanding of the relationship between effectuation and networks is far from complete. In this dissertation, I address this knowledge gap through three essays positioned at the interface of effectuation and network theory.

In the first essay, my systematic literature review synthesizes …

Entrepreneuring After 50: The Liminal Identity Transitions Of Older Emergent Entrepreneurs, Lucia Garcia-Lorenzo, Lucia Sell-Trujillo, Paul Donnelly

Articles

Entrepreneurship has been proposed as a solution to extending working lives. However, little is known about how older (50+) entrepreneurs manage their personal transitions into entrepreneurship. In this paper, we propose to use a liminal identity work perspective to explore the identity paradoxes that older entrepreneurs experience during their transition into entrepreneurship and how they manage it. We use a qualitative study conducted over 14 months in the United Kingdom. Our analysis shows how older entrepreneurs confront identity paradoxes, interruptions and identity polarization in their attempts to shift from older identities and activity patterns into new ones. The entrepreneurs who …

Exploring The Relationship Between Immigrant Enclave Theory And Transnational Diaspora Entrepreneurial Opportunity Formation, Osa Godwin Osaghae Dr, Thomas M. Cooney 2020 Technological University Dublin

Exploring The Relationship Between Immigrant Enclave Theory And Transnational Diaspora Entrepreneurial Opportunity Formation, Osa Godwin Osaghae Dr, Thomas M. Cooney

Articles

Immigrant Enclave Theory (IET) investigates the concentration and localisation of immigrants in a specific geographic area. Some IET studies have highlighted the resilience of these communities and described such enclaves as sources of mutual support, collective political power and beneficial social relationships. Other studies have examined the influence of IET on immigrant entrepreneurial activity within these geographic areas, although some of these studies have highlighted IET as a contributor to low profit margin businesses due to over-representation of immigrant enterprises within the same sector and geographic locality. This article considers the potential for Transnational Diaspora Entrepreneurship (TDE) as an alternative …

Transfer Of Ownership Strategies For Small Businesses, Kim Leanne Karioja

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Small- and medium-sized businesses are the backbone of a country’s economic success. But some small business owners lack strategies to successfully transfer their business to a new owner, increasing the probability that the business will cease to exist. Because baby boomer small business owners are retiring at a high rate, long-term local economic sustainability may be affected. Grounded in resource-based view theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore strategies small business owners used to transfer their business to a new owner. The participants were 6 small business owners who successfully transferred their business to a …

Social Development In The Urban Informal Sector: A Case Study Of Street Vendors In Pasar Minggu, Jakarta, Cucu Nurhayati 2020 UIN Syarif Hidayatullah

Social Development In The Urban Informal Sector: A Case Study Of Street Vendors In Pasar Minggu, Jakarta, Cucu Nurhayati

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Street vendors are basically able to sustain the economy of the urban poor. However, their existence is considered to cause disorder in the way they often deal with disciplinary actions organized by the government. The policy set by the provincial government on street vendors should be addressed to the cultural dimension, by minimizing acts of violence and instilling the values of cleanliness and order. Previous studies see street vendors as alternative economic actors who have a stake in the national economy. The studies also put more emphasis on policies (structure) and behaviour of street vendors (culture) so that they do …

After the Reformation, various companies implement CSR programs with various goals, features, and forms. This article discusses the latent function of the BROERI Program of PT Pertamina EP Asset 3 Subang Field as an instrument to build corporate relations with its stakeholder (Community Relation), besides its manifest function in capacity building and community independence (Community Development). Whereas for oil and gas companies, the risk of conflict with communities and other local stakeholders …

A Symbolic Participation Of The Local Community In The Implementation Of A Proper-Based Corporate Social Responsibility (Csr) Program, Yosef Hillarius Timu Pera, Yusup Ridwansyah

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

CSR practices continue to grow as a promising alternative development resource, yet still predominantly charitable in nature, preventing them from optimal community empowerment. Therefore, studies and policies at the national and global levels remain in search of the best format to optimize CSR programs’ role in community empowerment. A number of literature show less than optimal active participation and capacity-building of the community if a program is initiated by a directive, top-down approach, providing only a minimal participatory space based on the community’s potentials. Using qualitative method and in-depth interview techniques, this paper finds that the local community participation in …

The Paradox Of Informal Economy In Urban Area Indonesia: A Case Study Street Vendors In Jalan Salemba Raya, Jakarta, And Jalan Raya Sawangan, Depok, Rusydan Fathy, Dicky Rachmawan

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

Informal economic has a big proportion which absorbs 58% of the workforce in Indonesia. In urban areas, it easily can be seen as street vendors (SV). Several previous studies on informal economic about street vendors see them from negative perspective (as the source of urban irregularity) and positive perspective (for contribution to national economic development). By using the literature review, observation, and depth interview with the SV at Jalan Salemba Raya (Jakarta City) and Jalan Raya Sawangan (Depok City), this article particularly shows with the second perspective of previous studies that SV contributes to economic activity in urban. The conversion …
