Purpose – Most of the studies in entrepreneurship depend on single-source rating methods to collect data on both predictors and criteria. The threat to effect sizes as a result of using single-source ratings is particularly relevant to psychology-based entrepreneurship research. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore the prospects of applying 360-degree feedback to the field of entrepreneurship and to discuss a set of cases regarding how 360-degree feedback may boost effect sizes in entrepreneurship research.
Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative review of current literature was performed.
Findings – The review indicated that the effect sizes in psychology-based entrepreneurship …

Black Vs White Owned New Venture Performance: A Study Of Mediating Effects, Mayank Jaiswal
New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Design/methodology/approach: The Kauffman Firm Survey, a longitudinal data set of 4,928 new ventures started in the USA in 2004, has been utilized in this paper. Pooled OLS and Logit regression models were employed for direct effects. Mediation effects were tested using two different approaches: the Baron and Kenny approach and decomposition analysis. …

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Art is no longer only perceived as an “investment of passion”. Rather, art constitutes a viable alternative financial asset class that can be exploited through strategic trading. Due to the lower volatility and lesser correlation with traditional assets, holding art in an investment portfolio offers diversification benefits that will maintain returns while reducing risk. However, acquiring the “right” artworks, that is, the ones that will appreciate in value, can be pricey and risky. Investors can overcome these two challenges through participation in pooled art investments such as THE AAART FUND.
THE AAART FUND, located in New York City, is a …

In a world increasingly dominated by mega-Galleries like Zwirner and Gagosian with outposts in several continents, an international presence seems almost required for success. The rising cost of real estate in art capitals like London or New York is harming the gallery ecosystem, with less than half of the galleries reporting profitability. Smaller galleries, if they continue to run the current course, will never be able to compete with the likes of Hauser & Wirth or David Zwirner.
Art fairs are an expensive alternative to providing international reach, as they provide a small yet impersonal space in a different place …

On Oahu, our local art scene is seeing a renaissance of sorts when it comes to contemporary art practices mixed with local flavor. Kaka’ako area is a great example of this. Kaka’ako and China Town on the island of Oahu are new venues and outlets of contemporary theories and methods of showcasing art and the new generations both social and economic ideologies that have been adapted for island life.
While all of this is happening, there still isn’t a place where creatives on Isle can go to create, collaborate and grow their artistry all in one permanent place. More often …

Jumpstart Regulation Crowdfunding: What Is Wrong And How To Fix It, Jo Won
Lewis & Clark Law Review
In 2015, the Securities and Exchange Commission adopted Regulation Crowdfunding, which permitted small businesses and startups to raise capital from the general public online. Unfortunately, Regulation Crowdfunding failed its essential purpose to facilitate capital formation for small businesses and startups due to its high transaction costs and low offering limit. But it turns out that equity crowdfunding in other countries—especially in Great Britain—is highly successful, and in some cases, exceeds venture capital funding. In these countries, equity crowdfunding’s transaction costs and disclosure requirements are much lower than, and issuers may raise more money than, offerings under Regulation Crowdfunding. Furthermore, the …

The Ambivalent Effect Of Complexity On Firm Performance: A Study In The Global Service Provider Industry, Marcus M. Larsen, Stephan Manning, Torben Pedersen
Management and Marketing Faculty Publication Series
Prior literature is ambivalent about whether organizational complexity has positive or negative effects on firm performance. Using rich data on global service providers, we explore this ambivalence by disentangling performance consequences of different types of organizational complexity. We show that complexity arising from the coordination of different services and operations negatively influences profit margins through increased coordination costs, whereas complexity coming from the sophistication of particular services may positively influence margins through informational advantages. We also investigate the moderating effects of process commoditization and client-specific investments. Our findings point to critical performance dilemmas facing global service providers in a highly …

Unbundling Freedom In The Sharing Economy, Deepa Das Acevedo
Faculty Articles
Courts and scholars point to the sharing economy as proof that our labor and employment infrastructure is obsolete because it rests on a narrow and outmoded idea that only workers subjected to direct, personalized control by their employers need work-related protections and benefits. Since they diagnose the problem as being our system’s emphasis on control, these critics have long called for reducing or eliminating the primacy of the “control test” in classifying workers as either protected employees or unprotected independent contractors. Despite these persistent criticisms, however, the concept of control has been remarkably sticky in scholarly and judicial circles.

Management Faculty Publications (Archived)
Recently developed SEC guidelines provide the regulatory framework for Title II of the Jump Start our Business (JOBS) Act of 2012, which legalizes interstate equity crowdfunding in the United States. Concurrently, eighteen states have passed legislation or promulgated regulations that allow intrastate equity crowdfunding. At present, the literature has not addressed what this nascent funding mechanism will offer to investors, as well as, those seeking funding for entrepreneurial projects within the U.S. Therefore, this paper provides a review of current U.S. legislation, discusses the anticipated implications of equity crowdfunding, and develops a conceptual model that demonstrates potential outcomes.

Competitive Strategies Of Minority-Owned Small Businesses, Peter George Smith

Leaders of minority-owned businesses earn less revenue on average than their nonminority counterparts, even when both sets of leaders operate in the same industries. Among the factors leading to this earnings discrepancy is the lack of access that leaders of minority-owned businesses have to high-revenue opportunities. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies that some leaders of minority-owned small businesses use to compete for contracts in high-revenue industries. The study population comprised 3 owners of minority-owned small marketing consultancy firms headquartered in the Southeastern United States. University-Based Technology Start-Up Incubators – Evaluating Their Contribution To The Co-Production Of Knowledge, Innovation And Growth. Experience From The Edge, Anthony Paul Buckley, Stephen Davis

Policy makers in developed economies see merit in supporting the innovative abilities of technology entrepreneurs. It is hoped that from these highly–educated entrepreneur(s), new technology and service–based firms (NTBFs) can emerge. Indeed empirical evidence suggests that it is fast-growing young innovative firms which provide the bulk of new employment growth (Henrekson & Johansson, 2010; Storey & Greene, 2010). Start-up incubators are one of a number of micro-policy interventions with which states attempt – primarily through publically funded higher education Institutions - to support technology entrepreneurs to develop and commercialise their innovations. Incubator numbers have grown globally from their first appearance …

In the United States, immigrant entrepreneurs start almost one third of all new businesses. However, many immigrant entrepreneurs lack the knowledge or expertise to evolve their businesses beyond the ethnic enclave where their businesses are located. This multiple case study captured the strategies used by five Latino immigrant business owners who successfully expanded their business beyond their ethnic enclave. The conceptual framework for this study was dynamic capabilities theory. Data were collected from interviews, company documents, and observations of the operation of businesses and owners. Member checking and transcript reviews were used to enhance the reliability and credibility of the …
