In 2015, all Member States of the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which set out 17 Sustainable Development Goals (‘UNSDG’) and 169 targets spanning the spectrum of environmental, social and economic dimensions of development. Environmental sustainability is a strategic and ethical imperative for organizations, and numerous studies have investigated associations between leadership and employee pro-environmental or “green” behavior. However, these studies have typically focused on leadership styles that conflate leader behavior with its assumed antecedents or consequences. Moreover, the literature on relations between leadership and environmental sustainability constructs is fragmented and in need of systematic integration to effectively guide future research and practice. We use recently developed difference-in-differences methodologies and a panel of U.S. states over the period 1960 – 2015 to examine how bank branching deregulation impacted state-level income inequality. Existing research relying on traditional two-way fixed effects (TWFE) estimates and event studies provide mixed results. However, these results potentially suffer from biases due to treatment effect heterogeneity and the failure to account for multiple related treatments. Using bias-corrected difference-in-differences procedures and properly accounting for the timing of treatment, we find evidence that the combined effect of intrastate and interstate banking deregulation increased the income share of the top 10%, 5%, and …

We examine whether beliefs about climate change affect loan officers’ mortgage lending decisions. We show that abnormally high local temperature leads to elevated attention to and belief in climate change in a region. Loan officers approve fewer mortgage applications and originate lower amounts of loans in abnormally warm weather. This effect is stronger among counties heavily exposed to the risk of sea-level rise, during periods of heightened public attention to climate change, and for loans originated by small lenders. This study investigates the relationships among Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), advertising intensity, and performance in different national philanthropic environments. National philanthropic environment is defined as the propensity of a nation to be philanthropic. Employing institutional theory, we hypothesize that (1) advertising intensity mediates the CSR/performance relationship, (2) national philanthropic environment moderates the relationship between CSR and advertising intensity, and (3) national philanthropic environments moderate the relationship between advertising intensity and performance. Effectively addressing overwork culture in business remains a challenge, despite growing concerns about its negative impacts on employee wellbeing and productivity. This paper investigates corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives and stakeholder management promoted by large Japanese companies to address overwork culture. Based on interviews with managers and stakeholders from 31 companies, the study reveals that despite being part of CSR, overwork reduction initiatives often come into conflict with entrenched institutional pressures. These pressures are embedded in a cultural-cognitive and institutional context that prioritises quality and cooperation over individual productivity. We examine impact of corporate governance on firm performance following the implementation of the changes to the Code of Corporate Governance of Pakistan in 2012. Our sample period from 2008 to 2022 include periods of political instability and shifts in Pakistan's political landscape, providing an opportunity to examine the effectiveness of corporate governance mechanisms in enhancing accounting- and market-based firm performance measures. We find significant improvements attributed to reforms in the regulatory framework surrounding corporate governance practices particularly from expanded scope and composition of boards and audit committees. Research question/issue: We examine whether and how board diversity, measured by demographics (i.e., board gender, cultural diversity, tenure, social capital, expertise, and age) and structural diversity (i.e., board independence, size, board seat accumulation-chair, board compensation, and board meeting frequency), influence corporate eco-innovation. Research findings/insights: Utilizing a global sample of publicly listed companies for the period 2004–2019, we find that a one-standard deviation increase in demographic and structural diversity translates into 4.66% and 7.11% higher corporate eco-innovation, respectively. When Corporate Culture Matters: The Case Of Stakeholder Violations, Rashid Zaman

This study examines whether and how a strong corporate culture influences stakeholder violations. Using a longitudinal sample of monetary penalties imposed on US-listed firms for stakeholder violations, I find evidence that a strong corporate culture is significantly and negatively associated with such violations. This outcome remains robust to a series of robustness and endogeneity tests, including the application of the generalized method of moments (GMM), entropy balancing, and propensity score matching (PSM) estimation. The channel analysis evidence implies that information asymmetry is a possible mechanism through which a strong corporate culture is associated with stakeholder violations.
