The Evaluation Of The Implementation Of Fair Value Accounting: Impact On Financial Reporting, Karen Cascini, Alan DelFavero 2011 Sacred Heart University

The Evaluation Of The Implementation Of Fair Value Accounting: Impact On Financial Reporting, Karen Cascini, Alan Delfavero

WCBT Faculty Publications

The accounting industry is in a state of continuous change. In the United States, the historical cost principle has traditionally been the foundation of accounting. Until recently, assets and liabilities have been required to be recorded at their acquisition prices, with the exception of designated financial assets and financial liabilities. However, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) has now created accounting standards that are distant from the cost principle. Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 157: Fair Value Measurements, issued in September 2006 (FAS157, now codified as ASC 820) and Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 159: The Fair Value …

Learning The “Craft Of Auditing”: Applications Of The Cognitive Apprenticeship Framework, Kimberly D. Westermann 2011 Bentley University

Learning The “Craft Of Auditing”: Applications Of The Cognitive Apprenticeship Framework, Kimberly D. Westermann

2011

This dissertation consists of three studies examining component(s) of the cognitive apprenticeship (CA) model applied to on-the-job learning in auditing. This abstract summarizes each study, including purpose, methodology, and findings. The first study provides descriptive evidence on the importance and pervasiveness of CA as a model of on-the-job learning (OTJL) in auditing, investigates changes in its use over time, and assesses factors that promote or hinder auditors’ learning through apprenticeship. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 relatively new and more experienced audit partners at a Big 4 firm, seeking their impressions about past and current OTJL practices in public accounting. …

Big 4 Auditor Affiliation And Accruals Quality In Bangladesh, M. Humayun Kabir, Divesh Sharma, Md Ainul Islam, Amiros Salat

Faculty Articles

Purpose – Bangladesh is an emerging economy and international audit firms operate there through affiliated local audit firms. The Bangladesh audit market can be characterized as an intensely competitive small audit market with relatively poor demand for high-audit quality. In addition, Bangladesh has a relatively small and under developed but growing capital market that is characterized by poor corporate regulation and weak investor protection. The purpose of this paper is to examine the association between Big 4 affiliated auditors and accruals quality in Bangladesh.

Design/methodology/approach – Following prior literature, this paper uses both absolute discretionary accruals and signed discretionary accruals …

Optimization Of Adult Multipotent Stromal Cell-Bioscaffold Interactions For Tissue Regeneration With Bioreactors, Lin Xie 2011 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Optimization Of Adult Multipotent Stromal Cell-Bioscaffold Interactions For Tissue Regeneration With Bioreactors, Lin Xie

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Adult multipotent stromal cells (MSCs) in combination with biocompatible scaffolds may augment well-established medical and surgical techniques. Pre-implantation cell loading and viability on scaffold carriers followed by in vitro differentiation and extracellular matrix (ECM) formation contribute to the efficacy of in vivo tissue formation. Given the specificity of the parameters for each cell-scaffold construct, it is vital to assess the relative potential of various combinations to select the best option for various clinical needs. High demand for equine and human bone regeneration especially non-union fracture repair is still largely unaddressed. Therefore osteogenesis potential of both equine and human MSCs engrafted …

A Structural Analysis Of The European Monetary Union And Its Effect On Greece In Light Of The European Financial Crisis, Stephanie C. Ramos 2011 Claremont McKenna College

A Structural Analysis Of The European Monetary Union And Its Effect On Greece In Light Of The European Financial Crisis, Stephanie C. Ramos

CMC Senior Theses

The intent of this paper is to analyze the structural composition of the European Monetary Union and its implications for the European Financial Crisis, specifically with respect to Greece. This analysis will be driven by a trend analysis of several economic variables from 1999-2010. These variables range from the four requirements set under the Maastricht criteria, competitiveness indicators, and relative European trade balances, to international investment position. A quantitative and empirical analysis of this data finds that the Greek crisis was a result of structural issues with the EMU and the Greek government. The ECB’s inability to enforce the Maastricht …

An Evidential Reasoning Approach To Fraud Risk Assessment Under Dempster-Shafer Theory: A General Framework, Lei Gao, Theodore J. Mock, Rajendra P. Srivastava 2011 University of Nebraska - Lincoln

An Evidential Reasoning Approach To Fraud Risk Assessment Under Dempster-Shafer Theory: A General Framework, Lei Gao, Theodore J. Mock, Rajendra P. Srivastava

School of Accountancy: Faculty Publications

This paper develops a general framework under Dempster-Shafer theory for assessing fraud risk in a financial statement audit by integrating the evidence pertaining to the presence of fraud triangle factors (incentives, attitude and opportunities), and evidence concerning both account-based and evidence-based fraud schemes. This framework extends fraud risk assessment models in prior research in three respects. 1) It integrates fraud schemes, both account schemes through which accounts are manipulated, and evidence schemes through which frauds are concealed, into a single framework. 2) It incorporates prior fraud frequency information obtained from the Accounting and Auditing Enforcement Releases issued by the Securities …

Guidance For Accounting Professors, Stephen Scarpati 2011 Sacred Heart University

Guidance For Accounting Professors, Stephen Scarpati

WCBT Faculty Publications

When reflecting upon their choice ofcareer, many CPAs look back to a particular college accounting professor as a source of influence. In return, many accounting professors warmly recall the assistance they were able to give students. While the benefits of a successful CPA career are obvious to many, from the standpoint of a 19-year-old undergraduate trying to pick a major, the decision is daunting. The demands of a challenging accounting curriculum can be intimidating. Add the complex regulations and rigorous examination for CPA licensing and the expectations can be overwhelming to a young student. Accounting professors can play a vital …

Audit Quality And Accrual Persistence: Evidence From The Pre- And Post-Sarbanes-Oxley Periods, Dennis Chambers, Jeff L. Payne 2011 Kennesaw State University

Audit Quality And Accrual Persistence: Evidence From The Pre- And Post-Sarbanes-Oxley Periods, Dennis Chambers, Jeff L. Payne

Faculty Articles

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is two-fold: first, to examine whether the quality of accruals, as measured by accrual persistence, improved in the post-Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) period, and second, to examine the degree to which SOX-related improvement in accrual persistence varies across companies depending on the degree of their auditor's independence.

Design/methodology/approach – The paper compares accrual persistence in the pre- and post-SOX periods to test the first question. Then, partitioning on relative client importance as a measure of auditor independence, the paper compares the SOX-based improvement for clients of low and high independence audit firms.

Findings – The …

Ceo Demographics And Accounting Fraud: Who Is More Likely To Rationalize Illegal Acts?, Carmelita J. Troy, Ken G. Smith, Madeline A. Domino 2011 Andrews University

Ceo Demographics And Accounting Fraud: Who Is More Likely To Rationalize Illegal Acts?, Carmelita J. Troy, Ken G. Smith, Madeline A. Domino

Faculty Publications

This article proposes that key CEO demographic factors reflect alternative modes of rationalizing the choice to engage in and/or facilitate accounting fraud. Specifically the authors theorize that younger, less functionally experienced CEOs and CEOs without business degrees will be more likely to rationalize accounting fraud as an acceptable decision. Based on a sample of 312 fraud-committing and control firms, the study finds support for the authors’ predictions. It also finds that CEO stock options (a form of executive equity incentive) also predict fraud, and that this relationship is not moderated by CEO demographics. The study thus extends upper echelon theory …

Accounting For Lease Renewal Options: The Informational Effects Of Unit Of Account Choices, Jeffrey Hales, Shankar Venkataraman, T. Jeffrey Wilks 2011 Georgia Institute of Technology

Accounting For Lease Renewal Options: The Informational Effects Of Unit Of Account Choices, Jeffrey Hales, Shankar Venkataraman, T. Jeffrey Wilks

Faculty Publications

This study examines the informational effects of unit of account choices in the context of a proposed standard on lease accounting. Standard setters have tentatively decided that leases in excess of one year should be recognized on a lessee’s balance sheet, including optional lease periods, even though the lessee can choose not to renew the lease. We argue that this approach lacks representational faithfulness and creates an informational problem for users. Using an experiment, we show that the proposed treatment of renewal options has a negative effect on lenders’ willingness to lend to a firm with renewal options. However, we …
