Increasing Auditor Sensitivity To The Risk Of Fraudulent Financial Reporting: Assessing Incentives And Pressures On Top Management, Donald Wengler

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The ability of auditors to detect fraud, including intentional material misstatements in earnings, remains key to the credibility of audit firms and confidence in capital markets. In a behavioral experiment, this study concludes that auditors can increase sensitivity to management motivation to misreport by actively seeking to transform identified risk factors focused on the organization, into factors focused on top managers, and to evaluate whether these manager-focused risk factors represent incentives for personal …

Accounting Historians Notebook

Every year the University of Mississippi offers an accountancy study abroad class in London, England. The title of the graduate-level class is “The Development of Accounting Thought.” The class is intended to help the students think about how accounting started as a discipline and about accounting’s contributions to society. One of the highlights of that trip is the visit to the British Museum to examine the cuneiform documents. This visit to the British Museum and the cuneiform exhibit serves to focus the students’ attention on accountancy’s contributions to the ancient world and to modern society.

Cooking And The Books: A Guide To Restaurant Accounting, Lena Lambrou

Honors Projects in Accounting

The restaurant industry is known for particularly low profit margins; this project aims to understand where restaurants spend money and how expenses can be allocated for in this fast-paced environment. Through research of various cost accounting methods and the adaptability of those methods to restaurant culture, activity based costing (ABC) provided the most useful data for the restaurant. This project focuses on small business restaurants, specifically those that serve pizza. The backbone of experimentation for applying these accounting processes is a local pizza restaurant, in which the managers are unaware of how food cost and operating expenses could be combined …

The Successes And Shortfalls Of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002, Brad Hopkins

Senior Honors Projects

The collapse of Enron and its auditor, Arthur Andersen, in 2001 marked the greatest financial scare since the Great Depression. Enron, along with several other scandals, such as WorldCom and Waste Management, sent a financial shockwave throughout the United States. As a result, the public was no longer confident in the United States’ financial markets and the work being done by independent auditors. In order to satisfy the public and ensure that a case, such as Enron, would not happen again, Congress proposed and passed the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002. This paper presents an analysis of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of …

America's Tax System And How To Fix It, Brendan O. Smith 2016 Liberty University

America's Tax System And How To Fix It, Brendan O. Smith

Senior Honors Theses

Abraham Lincoln signed into law the first national income tax on August 5, 1861. Since 1913, the content of the Internal Revenue Code has increased from the 27-page tax law of that year to over 5000 pages today. As time has passed and the length of this document has increased, so has the expense and complexity of abiding by its statutes. The inefficiencies of the current system indicate that something must be done about the United States tax system, but no one has agreed on what to do. Many proposals to correct the problem have been brought forward over the …

Voluntary Internal Control Weakness Disclosures In Initial Public Offerings: Determinants And Subsequent Financial Reporting Quality, Tiffany Jo Westfall 2016 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Voluntary Internal Control Weakness Disclosures In Initial Public Offerings: Determinants And Subsequent Financial Reporting Quality, Tiffany Jo Westfall

College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study examines registrants’ incentives to disclose internal control weaknesses (ICWs) voluntarily in IPO registration statements and their post-IPO financial reporting quality. Using a sample of initial public offering (IPO) registrants from 2005-2013, I find that increasing management’s disclosure credibility, by hiring a new CEO in the IPO, is an incentive to include ICWs in IPO registration statements. I find that management does build credibility with underwriters evidenced by IPO registrants that disclose ICWs voluntarily are associated with higher IPO offer prices. The results suggest that registrants including voluntary ICW disclosures are more likely to receive an adverse SOX 404 …
