Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The purpose of this thesis was to find an optimum condition for the formation of the precipitated calcium soaps. The system investigated included the range of alkali addition of 0 to 1.2 pounds per one hundred gallons (#/100 gal.). A direct relationship between the adsorption with an increasing alkali concentration to a maximum of 145 parts per million calcium ion adsorbed to 833.5 ppm oleic acid when .225 (#/100 gal.) is applied. It shows that any higher concentration of an alkali will level out the maximum calcium adsorption to approximately 140 ppm.
It was also found that the alkali demand …

The Effects Of Ph On Alkali-Swellable Latex Binder Coating Systems, Larry N. Justen
The Effects Of Ph On Alkali-Swellable Latex Binder Coating Systems, Larry N. Justen
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Introduction
In recent years there has been a growing demand for the use of synthetic latexes as sole binders in coating formulations. This had been brought about by the shortage of supply and changing prices of natural binders like casein and protein. Synthetic latex binders require no cooking; this increased energy saving over starch becomes more important as fuel prices rise. Synthetic latex systems are easy to handle and they can be combined easily to fit different requirements.
Most synthetic latex systems need a thickener and water retention aid to achieve the right viscosity and flow properties. The new alkali-swellable …
The Effects Of Variable Double Disk Refining Action On Sheet And Fiber Properties, Gary Flohr
The Effects Of Variable Double Disk Refining Action On Sheet And Fiber Properties, Gary Flohr
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The purpose of this project was to evaluate several operating variables of the newly installed Western Michigan University Jones DD 3000 refiner. The operating variables were refiner load in amperes, throughput rate in gallons per minute, and disk speed in revolutions per minute.
On the fiber level, Canadian Standard Freeness was most dependent upon the load and somewhat less dependent upon the tonnage rate and speed. The tonnages used were 4.8, 9.6, and 14.4 T/D. At 9.6 T/D, the refiner used the least HPD/T per 100 ml C.S.F. drop throughout the 300-500 ml C.S.F. range. At 4.8 and 9.6 T/D, …

These questions relate to (a) the significance of ink and press variables in regard to show through; (bj the correlation between the light reflectivity of an ink film thickness and the show through of the ink; (c) the correlation between the percentage of pigment in the ink, and the show through of ink; (d) the interchangeability of various instruments for the measurement of show through. Data is obtained using a standard offset ink in combination with several different kinds of paper. Several, different known ink film thicknesses …
Recognition Thresholds For The Spectrally Opponent Neural Network In The Human Visual System, Douglas Smith
Recognition Thresholds For The Spectrally Opponent Neural Network In The Human Visual System, Douglas Smith
Theses
Recognition thresholds for an alphanumeric resolution test object of differing target/background chromaticities and equal luminosities were determined. Combinations of the four psychologically unique hues were studied, and those pairs corresponding to the green-red and yellow-blue opponent neural systems were found to give the highest visibilities. Equivalent achromatic contrasts for each of the presented color pairs were determined, and comparison of the results with achromatic data of other researchers shows clearly that the spectrally opponent neural network in the human visual system is much less efficient in processing spatial information than is the spatially opponent (achromatic) neural network.

Evaluation Of Rapid Reading Hay Moisture Meters For Field Use, Joseph Keith Mcdonald
Masters Theses
An instrument for use by farmers and agricultural research workers to quickly, accurately, and economically determine the moisture content of hay in the windrow would significantly improve the efficiency of forage crop production. However, no method or technique has been shown to be a successful tool for obtaining such determinations simply, precisely, and with easily portable equipment. An experiment was desig-nated to field test a commercially available conductance-type moisture meter and to identify needed revisions of the meter or a measuring technique that might improve its accuracy. An experimental conductance-type meter was also built and tested in an attempt to …

The Effects Of Fall Applications Of Glyphosate On Johnsongrass, Soy Beans, And Corn, Jewell R. English Jr.
The Effects Of Fall Applications Of Glyphosate On Johnsongrass, Soy Beans, And Corn, Jewell R. English Jr.
Masters Theses
Controlling johnsongrass [Sorghum halepense (L). Pers.] in such agronomic crops as corn (Zea mays L.) and soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] presents a major problem to many farmers. Although several preemergence herbicides have been developed to control seedling johnsongrass, in general rhizome johnsongrass is primarily responsive only to foliar-applied chemicals. One such postemergence chemical which gives excellent control of rhizome johnsongrass is glyphosate (N-phosphonomethyl glycine). If glyphosate is applied in the spring, a waiting period is required both before spraying to allow johnsongrass foliage to develop and then for trans location of the herbicide following application. As this waiting period …
