The Purpose Of Social Studies Education In The Elementary School, Donald Quincey Crockett, B.A. Aug 1976

The Purpose Of Social Studies Education In The Elementary School, Donald Quincey Crockett, B.A.

All Theses

Today public schools are faced with the great challenge of developing outstanding programs of instruction in social studies. Responsibilities of citizenship continue to increase as human problems become more complex both at home and abroad. The rapid growth of man's knowledge is basic disciplines and swiftly-moving changes in human affairs offer opportunities heretofore not possible in selecting content, activities, and materials for inclusion in the program. Many educators agree that we can no longer think of social studies as the study of history, geography, economics, or civics. These subjects may be looked upon as the parent disciplines of social studies. …

Teaching Reading To Slow Learning Children In The Wilmer Hutchins High School Hutchins, Texas, Dahl B. Storms Aug 1976

Teaching Reading To Slow Learning Children In The Wilmer Hutchins High School Hutchins, Texas, Dahl B. Storms

All Theses

Teachers find many books and articles written on teaching reading to slow learning children. No other educational skill has received so much emphasis or has been the subject of such a great variety of investigations. There is, however, a volume of books dealing with the reading of children but a scarcity of books dealing directly with the reading of children who are slow learners. Yet, in every classroom, there is a little group of "slow learners", that is, children who do not have the capacity to keep up with their classmates and whose problems must be met in some way …

Improving Home- School Relations In The Elementary Grades, Faddie C. Tillman, B.S. Jul 1976

Improving Home- School Relations In The Elementary Grades, Faddie C. Tillman, B.S.

All Theses

Each teacher has to analyze his own background to become aware of the blind spots, the complicating feelings, the lacks that he brings to this new field of home-school relations. However the score adds up, every teacher can feel confident and good about one thing: Work with parents draws on exactly the same principles as does work with children. Probably each teacher is better prepared to be helpful to parents than he gives himself credit for.

Home-school relations is a new field, but it is not a separate field, different and apart. It had its roots in the education that …

An Investigation Into The Effects And Treatment Of Parental Child Abuse, Irma Gene Garrett

All Theses

There is a widespread problem of parental child abuse and too little attention given to the problem to correct it . There is also a problem with the authorities in that there seems to be a thin line in determining what is child abuse and what is not.

The purpose of this study is to take a look at the diagnoses and treatment of the abused and the abuser as administered by local and county agencies, as well as nationwide. Also to see what improvements, if any, can be made.

This study will be limited to cases in the Dallas …

A Study To Determine The Role Of The Counselor In Promoting Cooperation Among The Counselor, Teacher, Home And Community, Gloria Deloach Lockett

All Theses

There is increasing concern for the worth and progress of the individual, as well as for the importance of education. This concern and the values in our culture that have given rise to the concept of counseling and guidance in our schools are being reinforced. The concept must be one that involves, at varying degrees, the home, school and community. To coordinate these in the counseling and guidance services requires cooperation. Responsibilities need to be identified for the counselor, teachers, home, administrators and community. It is mandatory that each individual or agency recognize that their efforts are important for the …

The Role Of The Counselor In Assessment Of Career Education And Its Effect On Students, Margaret C. Stevens Jul 1976

The Role Of The Counselor In Assessment Of Career Education And Its Effect On Students, Margaret C. Stevens

All Theses

Many students have completed what is referred to as "formal education" and have not been able to qualify for a suitable job, or even have an idea of what their capabilities are for entering the work world. It should be a fact that all students leave high school with a salable skill in order to be an effective member in society. The problem of this study is to determine to what extent the counselor is involved in helping the students attain career information and at what point the students will be initiated to do some career-seeking on their own.

The …

Analysis And Improvement Of Oral Directions In A Fourth Grade Classroom, Ora Dell Curtis

All Theses

Research in listening is still in an exploratory phase. Evidence points out the importance of listening in our lives and while indicating that we are rather inefficient in our listening habits, suggests that it may be possible to train for better listening. Several studies have been undertaken to discover various factors which will make up the skill of listening. There is a need to single out some of these factors and study them independently.

One aspect of listening is that of following oral directions. The investigator has recognized the importance of listening as it involves the intake of ideas and …

The Recreational Patterns Of Male Juvenile Delinquents In Dallas County, Texas, Beverly Ann Mcneal

All Theses

The recreation movement in America gained its impetus from the Industrial Revolution which resulted ultimately in the urbanization of our population. America changed from a basic agrarian society to an industrial giant in a few short years. With the growth of the urban population, the home and church could no longer supply all the positive recreational outlets needed by society. The industrial age caused such a change in the way people lived that an extensive educational campaign began to make people aware of the importance of recreation in their lives. The fact that recreation has become important in the American …

A Survey Of Drug Abuse In A Selected Junior High School, Lon L. Johnson, R. Ph., B.S.

All Theses

INTRODUCTION

Over the past several years, public concern has greatly increased over mind-altering drug use among students. That concern has been evoked by a flow of reports from individuals, mass media, the police, and other governmental agencies, educators, and the community. The reports are consistent in telling of a remarkable expansion of student interest in and use of drugs which are illicit or exotic.

Drug abuse is an issue that concerns all levels of society, from the very low socio-economic groups to the extreme high socio-economic groups. The potential drug abusers range from the submissive poor to the successful affluent …

A Study Of The Mechanics Involved In Developing A Module Schedule, Johnnie Hightower Lee Jun 1976

A Study Of The Mechanics Involved In Developing A Module Schedule, Johnnie Hightower Lee

All Theses

Modular instruction is rapidly gaining wide acceptance although its success in each application appears to vary with the skill and personality of the instructor. Generally, a modular program involves the separation of course content into self-contained topics or modules. It allows the student to proceed through the material at his own pace and present himself for testing whenever he feels he has achieved mastery. Often a handbook accompanies each module, introducing the topic, outlining major issues and controversies, posing provocative questions, and suggesting further reading.

Most modular programs include tangible experiences and tasks. Usually, students are allowed to retake any …

The public schools are dedicated to the task of providing opportunities for the maximum educational development of each pupil. In harmony with these purposes of education in a democracy is the important task of identifying and making provision for the student with exceptional potential in each of the fields of learning.

The present struggle for the very existence of …

An Analysis Of The Open Classroom Concept As Compared To The Closed Classroom Concept, Delmas Frank Morton, B.A Jun 1976

An Analysis Of The Open Classroom Concept As Compared To The Closed Classroom Concept, Delmas Frank Morton, B.A

All Theses

In the past several years, large numbers of new elementary schools have been built according to open space plans. These buildings feature open areas with few. if any, interior walls.

Because of recency of the move toward open-space buildings, research efforts directed at assessing the impacts of these differences on pupils have been few. Attempts to make order of what little research has been done are hampered by a tendency of some researchers to confuse the terms " open space" and " open education".

The term open space refers to particular physical environment. The term open education refers to method …

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Non-Professional Social Workers, John Wesley Thomas Jun 1976

A Study Of The Effectiveness Of Non-Professional Social Workers, John Wesley Thomas

All Theses

The evidence is clear that the demand for social work manpower will burgeon considerably in the next few years as a consequence of increased welfare services. It seems that although the social work field has expressed the need for additional manpower and has supported institutions of undergraduate programs, it has neglected to make provisions for including non- MSW workers within most agency structures. If methods can be developed to enable less-trained personnel to perform the work currently being done by MSW's, then administrators of social welfare agencies will be fulfilling in part their accountability to the collll1unity.

The social work …

The Elementary School Role In Career Education K-3, Andrea Mckinney Jun 1976

The Elementary School Role In Career Education K-3, Andrea Mckinney

All Theses

Education and work, two of our most basic historical values, are both in trouble in the United States. Education suffers largely because it has given insufficient attention to the role of work in the life-style and values of the individual; work suffers because education more than those involved have failed in adapting traditional work values to the needs of a new and more complex age.

Career education has progressed from an advocacy to a movement, its most rapid advancement has been achieved at the elementary school level.

The problem of this study is to show the role the elementary school …

Historical Trends In Public School Desegregation And Strategies Used To Delay Compliance With The Supreme Court Decision Of May 17, 1954 By The Houston Public Schools, Clifton H. Collins Jr. Mar 1976

Historical Trends In Public School Desegregation And Strategies Used To Delay Compliance With The Supreme Court Decision Of May 17, 1954 By The Houston Public Schools, Clifton H. Collins Jr.

All Theses

The purpose of this study is to show the impact of a conservative approach to desegregation of a formerly de jure school system covering the sixth largest school system in the Nation operating under Federal Court order for 15 years. At the outset the connotation of "conservative" should be defined as "doing the least possible" to meet whatever legal requirements of compliance may exist so that compliance with desegregation becomes, always, only minimum compliance. In the words of Judge Ben Connally, speaking from the bench of the Houston Federal District Court on July 23 in the Houston School Desegregation Case …
