Exploring Collaboration: A Program Evaluation Of A Mental Health Intervention In A Public Elementary School, Joy Rhodes
Exploring Collaboration: A Program Evaluation Of A Mental Health Intervention In A Public Elementary School, Joy Rhodes
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this evaluative study was to develop and implement a program evaluation design for a model of early mental health intervention to primary grade level classrooms in a public elementary school. The design reflects a formative evaluation study, providing information for current and future programming and is manageable to implement, thus facilitating longitudinal data collection.
This therapeutic model of classroom intervention stresses the integration of children’s social, emotional and intellectual development and proposes a collaborative approach between therapist and educator. Levels of intervention for collaborators include (1) children identified as requiring therapeutic approaches to social-emotional difficulties experienced in …
Depression And The Perception Of Reinforcement: A Modified Replication, Adele Gillis
Depression And The Perception Of Reinforcement: A Modified Replication, Adele Gillis
Dissertations and Theses
The present study was a modified replication of Miller and Seligman’s (1973) study. Expectancy ratings under skill and chance tasks were examined in 51 college students in four groups: depressed high-external, depressed low-external, nondepressed high-external, and nondepressed low-external. The major hypothesis predicted that there would be greater association (1) between both magnitude and direction of expectancy change and outcome of the previous trial (success/non-success) with nondepression than with depression, under the skill task, (2) between both magnitude and direction of expectancy change and outcome of the previous trial (success/non-success) with low-externality than with high-externality, under the skill task, and (3) …
Does Urban Noise Represent A Hazard To Health?, Frances J. Storlie
Does Urban Noise Represent A Hazard To Health?, Frances J. Storlie
Dissertations and Theses
The problem of noise as a potential health hazard to urban man has been raised. The literature was used to establish two premises: that cities are noisy environments, and that noise-free societies have less coronary artery disease (CAD) than do industrialized sections of the world. These differences also hold for rural and urban areas of the United States.
Geographical questions concerning rate differentials for CAD have been addressed by numerous disciplines. Subsequently, social, psychological, and physical explanations have been put forth. Throughout this paper the emphasis has been placed on the physical aspects of noise exposure. The conceptual frame utilizes …

The Assessment Of Interviewee Experience Of The Expressive And Interpersonal Meanings Of Interviewer Nonverbal Behavior, Carol Ann Bloom
The Assessment Of Interviewee Experience Of The Expressive And Interpersonal Meanings Of Interviewer Nonverbal Behavior, Carol Ann Bloom
Dissertations and Theses
The present study investigated the expressive and interpersonal functioning of nonverbal behavior within a dyadic relationship. A questionnaire derived from the Interpersonal Perception Method of Laing, Phillipson, and Lee (1966) was developed to assess the impact of an interviewer’s nonverbal behavior on the interviewee’s experience of herself, the interviewer, and their relationship.
To determine this impact and evaluate the usefulness of the instrument, two interviewer nonverbal behavior sets were defined. Two female interviewers interviewed a total of sixteen female interviewees for each behavior set, using the same verbal style and interview format throughout each one-time interview. The interviewees then filled …

Bekesy Audiometry In The Detection Of Nonorganic Hearing Loss, Paula Elizabeth Rotondi
Bekesy Audiometry In The Detection Of Nonorganic Hearing Loss, Paula Elizabeth Rotondi
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
Numerous investigators have utilized Bekesy audiometry in the detection of nonorganic hearing loss. The efficiency with which Bekesy audiometry detects nonorganicity has varied according to the method of Bekesy test administration and the definition of the Type V nonorganic pattern. Rintelmann and Harford’s Type V definition and the LOT- (Lengthened Off-Time) Bekesy test have emerged as valuable nonorganicity detectors. However, more recent research (Citron & Reddell, 1976; Sedge, 1974) has found these methods to be considerably less worthwhile than originally reported, The first purpose of this study was to devise an efficient means for utilizing Bekesy audiometry in the detection …
A Comparison Of Overbite Relapse To Age, Interincisal Angle And Lower Face Height In Class Ii Deepbite Cases, James E. Macalpine
A Comparison Of Overbite Relapse To Age, Interincisal Angle And Lower Face Height In Class Ii Deepbite Cases, James E. Macalpine
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Patients with deep skeletal or dental bites before treatment have been noted to have a greater tendency towards relapsing to this deepbite following orthodontic treatment than do patients whose malocclusion showed a more ideal overbite relationship before treatment.
This study utilized patients selected from Rocky Mountain Data Systems for their deepbite trends. Three areas were compared to overbite relapse, 1) age, 2) interincisal angle 3) lower face height.
Results of this study indicate that overbite cases that have the most problems in retention were skeletal deepbites. This study also indicates that there was no disadvantage to early treatment, that the …
The Pathophysiology Of Acute Venous Occlusion, Lewis H. Curd Jr.
The Pathophysiology Of Acute Venous Occlusion, Lewis H. Curd Jr.
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Large artery, pedal small vein, femoral vein and central venous pressures and extremity volume changes were recorded in mongrel dogs in which the hindlimb was perfused at a constant flow. Arterial, pedal venous and femoral venous blood gases were drawn and analyzed for measurements of arterio-venous O2 and CO2 differences. Paw and thigh resistances were calculated. Measurements were repeated following ligation of the iliac and femoral veins, alpha receptor blockade (dibenzyline), and dilation with Vasodilan. Results indicate that ligation of extremity veins results in an active ·increase in total limb resistance below the ligation, an increase in the …
Kinetic And Binding Studies On L-∝-Glycerophosphate Dehydrogenase, Paul Richard Rosevear
Kinetic And Binding Studies On L-∝-Glycerophosphate Dehydrogenase, Paul Richard Rosevear
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
The properties of the coenzyme, NAD, binding site of chicken muscle L-∝-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase were studied. Adenosine monophosphate, adenosine diphosphate and adenosine diphosphoribose were sha.vn to inhibit the enzyme competitively with respect to NAD. The presence of adenosine, pyrophosphate and ribose regions in the coenzyme binding site of the enzyme was suggested by the inhibitor constants obtained for these compounds.
Disodium monoalkyl phosphates, n-butyl to n-dodecyl phosphate, inclusive, were also shown to inhibit the L-∝-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase catalized reaction competitively with respect to NAD. A positive chain length effect was observed in the binding of these compounds to the enzyme, suggesting the …

Immuno-Histochemical Method For Demonstration Of Lactic Dehydrogenase "M" Subunits In Rat Skeletal Muscle, Kidney And Peripheral Nerve, Luis M. Bustos-Arango
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Immunolocalization of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) rrM'‘' sub units has been achieved using paraformaldehyde vapor phase fixation of freeze-dried sections. An antiserum to monkey LDH-M^ was found to cross react with rat LDH-M subunits. The fibers of the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles which are stained using the immuno-peroxidase procedure do not stain in the presence of 4 M urea in the conventional method. In kidney, the collecting tubules are the structures which stain most intensely with the immuno-peroxidase procedure and in peripheral nerve both the Schwann cells and axons stain. The nuclei of muscle fibers. kidney tubular cells and Schwann cells …
Hallucinogens: A Cause Of Convulsive Ergot Psychoses, Sylvia Dahl Winters
Hallucinogens: A Cause Of Convulsive Ergot Psychoses, Sylvia Dahl Winters
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Ergotism with vasoconstriction and gangrene has been reported through the centuries. Less well publicized are the cases of psychoses associated with convulsive ergotism. Lysergic acid amide a powerful hallucinogen having one.-tenth the hallucinogenic activity of LSD-25 is produced by natural sources. This article attempts to show that convulsive ergot psychoses are mixed psychoses caused by lysergic acid amide or similar hallucinogens combined with nervous system lesions secondary to vasoconstrictive effects of ergotoxine.

Evaluation Of A Precision Filing Test For Predicting Dental Technic Performance, Douglass Roberts
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A precision filing test involving the reduction of a steel cylinder to a perfect cube with the use of a hand file and bench vise was devised as a diagnostic tool for the early detection of freshman students having technic difficulties. The test was administered to 188 freshman dental students in three classes at Loma Linda University, School of Dentistry. Subjective and objective scores were then statistically compared with subsequent technic and clinic grades of the students. The simple linear correlations between the predictor test variable and criterion grades were statistically significant for one class and for the combined classes …
The Effect Of Planned Physical Activities On Deficient Motor Skills In Head Start Preschool Children, Darlene L. Robinson
The Effect Of Planned Physical Activities On Deficient Motor Skills In Head Start Preschool Children, Darlene L. Robinson
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
During the past few years many physicians, nurses, psychologists, teachers, and physical educators have begun to place more emphasis upon the developmental problems of children. As an outgrowth of this, more attention has been given the child showing mild to moderate motor problems. As a result of these more subtle difficulties going unrecognized and untreated, children may suffer from learning disorders, lack of acceptance by teachers and peers, maladaptive behavior and feelings of low self-esteem (Cratty, 1970; Kiphard, -1970; and Ferinden, 1972).
The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether planned physical activities would aid in remediation and/or modification …
