Nebraska And Rural Electrification Through 1940, Roberta K. Barndt
Nebraska And Rural Electrification Through 1940, Roberta K. Barndt
Student Work
Since Nebraska is primarily an agricultural state, the struggle to bring electricity to its rural areas played an important role in the long-standing battle to decrease the disparity between living standards in rural and urban America. During the first two decades of the twentieth century, telephones and automobiles lessened rural isolation while increased utilization of tractors and other technological innovations rendered farm labor less tedious. Nevertheless, without electricity, the one modern innovation that more than any other brought comfort and convenience within the reach of the urban masses, living and working conditions on the farm remained comparatively primitive. Farm families …
The Effects Of The Norman Conquest On Anglo-Saxon Aristocracy, Cynthia L. Puryear
The Effects Of The Norman Conquest On Anglo-Saxon Aristocracy, Cynthia L. Puryear
Honors Theses
In 1066, William the Conqueror successfully invaded England. He established himself as king and began to implement his policies for complete control over the subjugated territory. The Norman invasion did not involve a large influx of people: but, rather a conquest by a man who acquired the country for himself and distributed the land to his followers. The old English aristocracy, mainly composed of the king's thegns, virtually disappeared with the conquest and was replaced by a new aristocracy.
The near disappearance of the English aristocrats and their replacement by Normans holding land in return for military service was an …

A Study Of Historical Evidences Related To Lds Church As Reflected In Volumes Xiv Through Xxvi Of The Journal Of Discourses, Terry J. Aubrey
Theses and Dissertations
The material in this study is a follow-up of a thesis done by Paul C. Richards entitled, "A Study of Evidences Related to LDS Church History as Reflected in Volumes I through XIII of the Journal of Discourse." That same basic format has been employed in treating the last thirteen volumes of the Discourses.
The Discourses contains addresses delivered by General Authorities of the LDS Church and others from 1854 to 1886. Until Richards did his thesis, no one had compiled an index of those volumes that dealt exclusively with history related to the LDS Church. This study …
The American Military And The Congress, 1775-1789: Civil-Military Relationships, George J. Shuflata
The American Military And The Congress, 1775-1789: Civil-Military Relationships, George J. Shuflata
Student Work
In any discussion of military-state relationships relative to the formation of the first American army and government, one must consider the fact that Americans feared the military due to their pre-revolutionary experience. As colonists they forumlated their own ideas on what the American military should be. The militia concept appeared to fill their needs. Forced into a war for which they were totally unprepared, they gradually formed a government and the military force that would produce a victory. However, the road to that victory was paved with frustrations, both military and governmental.

Master's Theses

The Pioneer Chinese Of Utah, Don C. Conley
The Pioneer Chinese Of Utah, Don C. Conley
Theses and Dissertations
With the single exception of a survey of Chinese history in the Western United States written by the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, there exists no other documented history of the Chinese experience in Utah.
This paper offers an overview of Pioneer Chinese life in Utah territory from the Chinese railroad laborers in Box Elder County to the Chinatown settlement in Silver Reef mining camp in Washington County. Old Chinese customs, individual Chinese personalities and communities are rediscovered through the use of census data, newspaper editorials, and oral interviews. Chinese religion is analyzed from available data about pioneer Chinese funeral …

H. S. Chamberlain And The Bayreuth "Kulturkreis": A Study In Ideology, David George Otness
Dissertations and Theses
Houston Stewart Chamberlain (1855-1927) was born an Englishman but adopted Germany as his home. Chamberlain was a publicist for "fin de siecle" ideas about art and politics which were tempered by both late nineteenth century Imperialism and by World War One. As an old man he endorsed Adolf Hitler and has been credited as an important synthesizer for the ideology of National Socialism. This study examines Chanber1ain' s life in terms of his involvement with art and politics. It utilizes his work as a popularizer and his conversion into an exponent of Deutschturn to discuss broad social questions. While it …

Missionary Activities And Church Organizations In Pennsylvania, 1830-1840, V. Alan Curtis
Theses and Dissertations
During most of the 1830's, the Church was headquartered at Kirtland, Ohio. The thrust of her missionary effort toward the populous east came from that center. The impact of that proselyting work on Ohio's neighboring state, Pennsylvania, is the subject of this thesis. This study is concerned with the background and history of the missionary work in Pennsylvania as a part of the greater history of the Church in the 1830's. This thesis is also concerned with the results of that missionary work. Pennsylvania provided missionaries to teach in New York, New England, Canada and elsewhere and laid the foundation …
