Several fundamental questions are discussed relating to show through of ink on paper. These questions relate to (a) the significance of ink and press variables in regard to show through; (bj the correlation between the light reflectivity of an ink film thickness and the show through of the ink; (c) the correlation between the percentage of pigment in the ink, and the show through of ink; (d) the interchangeability of various instruments for the measurement of show through. Recognition thresholds for an alphanumeric resolution test object of differing target/background chromaticities and equal luminosities were determined. Combinations of the four psychologically unique hues were studied, and those pairs corresponding to the green-red and yellow-blue opponent neural systems were found to give the highest visibilities. Equivalent achromatic contrasts for each of the presented color pairs were determined, and comparison of the results with achromatic data of other researchers shows clearly that the spectrally opponent neural network in the human visual system is much less efficient in processing spatial information than is the spatially opponent (achromatic) neural network.

"Polyox" is a polymer of ethylene oxide. It is soluble in water and commercially available. The effects of Polyox in fountain solutions were studied and evaluated. The same concentration (one-half percent of Polyox in water) at different pH and blending times, was tested for physical properties and printability. The physical property tests made were of viscosity, surface tension and contact angle. The printability tests were conducted as roll-up, ability to clean up the plate, resistance to scumming, printing sharpness and resolution properties. Parametric pumping represents a new development in separation science. It has attracted considerable attention both because of its novelty and because it permits continuous operation in small equipment with very high separation factors. The basic principle of parametric pumping is to utilize the coupling of periodic changes in equilibrium conditions caused by periodic changes in some intensive variables (temperature, pH, electric field, etc.), and periodic changes in flow direction to separate the components of fluid which flows past a solid adsorbent. This paper discusses conceptual and experiential aspects of helping male homosexuals who have problems in achieving pleasurable and satisfying sexual experiences . New helping modalities, particularly those of Masters and Johnson , are explored in the context of a case study of a single 28 year old male who was able during the course of the counseling relationship to attain greater sexual pleasure and emotional satisfaction both by himself and with a partner by breaking out of a pattern of unfulfilling masturbation . In order to establish limits which are representative of the allowable variation in solid ink density (SID) of the single process colors, as determined by the allowable variability of their overprints, a study was conducted utilizing fourteen (14) experienced color observers selected from printing companies in the Greater Rochester area. Printed color patches, at the 70% tint level of cyan, magenta, yellow, red (M+Y) , green (Y+C) , blue (M+C) and three-color overprints (Y+M+C) , were shown to observers, individually. A numerical procedure is presented for the solution of the transonic potential flow equation around an isolated airfoil, for the hydraulic analogy. The numerical method used was the finite difference method, appropriately modified for a mixed elliptichyperbolic system of equations. Potential flow analysis was used, since for all practical purposes, the flow is inviscid throughout the flow field, except for wake regions and boundaries. The mixed finite difference scheme has proven to be an effective technique in the solution of elliptic and hyperbolic flow problems. It has been previously reported that the speed and contrast of a given film-developer combination is influenced by the addition of PEO to either the developer or to the emulsion. Factorial experiments were conducted upon Ag(Brl) and Ag(BrCl) films to determine the PEO development effects on hydroquinone and N-methyl-p-aminophenol developers of normal sulfite level. Various levels of exposure, bromide concentration, and PEO addition to the developer were employed to gain information about possible interactions as well as individual effects. If practical colorants could be found to meet theoretical requirements then there would be no need for color correction in multi-color printing. Color correction is necessary because the available yellow, magenta, and cyan inks absorb and transmit in all parts of the visible spectrum. It is possible to measure how much these colorants deviate from the ideal with the use of a reflection densitometer. The red, green, and blue filter positions on a densitometer will read the cyan, magenta, and yellow densities respectively. From these densities the amount of color correction necessary to compensate for the inks deficiencies is expressed …

The problem is to devise a system of pre-setting the ink keys of a sheet-fed offset press in order to save make-ready time. A preliminary experiment is run to establish and identify the correlation between the information obtained from visually scanning the plates and the ink key dial settings. The test involves a control group and a test group making press runs to see if pre-setting the ink keys can save time. The results show that such an idea is possible. The preliminary experiment establishes a positive correlation between the two variables and test group press-run times are significantly less …

The purpose of this study was to study the feasibility of quantitatively pre-setting the ink key distribution on an off-set press. Presently the pre-settings of the ink keys has been left to the pressmens' ability and experience. This, in many cases, involves much "trial and error" work along with lengthy makeready times. This study attempted to reduce makeready time by quantitatively pre-setting ink keys from data obtained from an estimating unit and use of a set of calibration curves. A study of the emulsification process of lithographic ink and water was conducted to investigate methods for determining the water content of lithographic ink and water emulsions. Experiments using infra-red spectroscopy and analysis of the hydroxyl and carbonyl absorption bands revealed several variables which must be considered when attempting to use infra-red spectroscopic methods for the determination of the water content of ink emulsions. These factors include the choice of pigment, (either transparent or opaque), the type of cell medium, and methods for dispersing added water into an ink. This thesis describes the technique of principle component analysis as applied to determining if a combination of three characteristic vectors would account for an underlying structure in the eight color test objects specified by the CIE for calculation of the color rendering index (CRI). Anticipated was that three vectors would account for 100 % of the variance in the eight test objects; however it was determined that three vectors account for only 96 % of the variance.
