The Importance Of Doctrinal Teaching In Holiness Camp Meetings, David C. Johnson Aug 1976

The Importance Of Doctrinal Teaching In Holiness Camp Meetings, David C. Johnson

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Interest in this research began during the summer of 1974 with the author's involvement in a doctrine class for teenagers. The class was part of the program of the Jennings Lodge Summer Assembly Camp of the Evangelical Church of North America. Each general class had already been established, but no curriculum had been chosen. Thus it was necessary to improvise until improvement could be made. Therefore, this project began as an attempt to provide doctrinal material for teaching teens foundations of faith in the summer camp setting. It includes research into the needs of youth, as well as methods through …

Effects Of Human Relations Training On The Social, Emotional, And Moral Development Of Students, With Emphasis On Human Relations Training Based Upon Religious Principles, Stephen R. Covey

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of human relations training on 222 students in organizational behavior labs were measured in this study. Eighty students were randomly assigned to one of four sections taught by the same instructor--two traditional sections and two stewardship sections-in a Solomon Four-Group Experimental Design. The two stewardship sections used individualized goal selection and accountability procedures with discussions and readings incorporating religious principles. Four data-gathering instruments were used to measure the social, emotional, and moral development of the students . A one-way analysis of variance on pre- and posttest questionnaires from all 222 students showed no significant differences among any of …

In Memoriam: The Way Of A Mystic, Carolyn E. Wagner

Theses & Honors Papers

The purport, therefore, of this thesis will be to discover some of the general characteristics of a mystical experience as accepted by various students of mysticism and to discern whether or not these characteristics are to be found in In Memoriam. Other poems by the Poet Laureate will be used to gain insight into the development of the author's attitude toward mysticism, as well as any influential ideas of such associates as Arthur Henry Hallam, or other contemporary writers, or historical movements. Throughout, there will be an attempt to refute, compromise, or concur with any critical conjectures made regarding Tennyson's …

A Pastor's Guide To Understanding Abortion And Its Theological And Ethical Implications, John Richard Tusant May 1976

A Pastor's Guide To Understanding Abortion And Its Theological And Ethical Implications, John Richard Tusant

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Babies are God's opinion that the world should go on. Babies are also the life-line for humanity. This continuing life-line proposes certain questions concerning the life and the death of babies as the pastor deals with humanity.

God has created man and woman to reproduce and replenish the earth, as seen in Genesis 9:7. However, the issue that faces society and particularly the pastor is, unwanted infants. The issue of unwanted infants has consequences that will govern the father and mother's thoughts and actions for life. Generally, people who question the importance of God's ways in the issue to be …

The West Coast Jesus Movement: 1965-1975, Thomas John Hinderliter

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

In the mid 1960 1 s, a new and unique phenomenon began to hit the religious establishment in America. Hippies, drug addicts, and the restless youth of America began converting to Christianity in unprecedented numbers. The new Christians became known variously as Jesus freaks, Jesus people, and street Christians. The developing movement became known as the Jesus revolution or the Jesus movement.

It is the purpose of this study to trace the development of the Jesus movement on the West Coast from 1965 to 1975.

A Projected Growth Strategy For The Madras Free Methodist Church, Ralph E. Cooper

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

B.T. Roberts, the spiritual forefather of all Free Methodists and the first bishop of the church "born of necessity" in 1860, was a man in the lineage of John Wesley the spiritual forefather of Methodism and Francis Asbury the first bishop of American Methodism.. Bishop Roberts was convinced that being a success does not come by chance in the work of the Lord.. He wrote in his book, ~ .2£ ~' "He who works for God never loses the fruit of his labors. Failure is clearly beyond the range of possibility .. " This same positive approach is given in …

The Prayer Ministry Of The Apostle Paul, John L. Tien May 1976

The Prayer Ministry Of The Apostle Paul, John L. Tien

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Prayer is an important subject among the biblical teachings. In almost all of the books of the Bible, truths about prayer are mentioned, and actual prayers recorded.

Prayer is also important in the ecclesiastical life. It exists in all of the worships and fellowships among Christians, either in the beginning or at the end of the liturgy, sometimes also in the middle right before the sermon presentation.

Prayer is very important in the life of a Christian. At the time one is saved, he (or she) "calls upon the name of the Lord" through prayer. After he has been saved, …

Music As A Tool In Christian Education, Carl Jon Duhrkoop May 1976

Music As A Tool In Christian Education, Carl Jon Duhrkoop

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

As one enters a typical Sunday School, he will hear music. This is not surprising, for music is a prominent part of the education of the Church. Questions, however, are surfacing today. Is music a valuable part of the education of the Church or is it simply an appendage, used out of indifference, convention or even the need to fill up the time allotted? Is music being planned with the lesson or is it more commonly picked upon arrival? Is music chosen for its beauty, familiarity, intended use or for its rhythmic style? These questions are not easy to answer …

The Message Of Salvation: A Comparative Study Of The Theology Of Karl Rahner And Of The Lutheran Confessions On The Relationship Of Faith And Unbelief To The Word Of God, Thomas Manteufel May 1976

The Message Of Salvation: A Comparative Study Of The Theology Of Karl Rahner And Of The Lutheran Confessions On The Relationship Of Faith And Unbelief To The Word Of God, Thomas Manteufel

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The problem proposed for investigation in this study is the same as that raised in the last clause: Is the theory of anonymous Christianity compatible with the Lutheran Confessions? A negative answer would seem to be indicated by the statement in the Confessions that all who are outside the Christian Church:

••• remain in eternal wrath and damnation, for they do not have the Lord Christ, and, besides, they are not illuminated and blessed by the gifts of the Holy Spirit (LC, 2:66).

It is necessary, however, to inquire carefully whether this statement and others related to it in the …

A Lutheran View Of Vactican Ii On Liturgy And Scripture, Raymond Mueller May 1976

A Lutheran View Of Vactican Ii On Liturgy And Scripture, Raymond Mueller

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

The fact that the Second Vatican Council has brought vast change into the Roman Catholic Church is obvious. But was the sum of these changes beneficial for its own members and sufficient to remove the walls erected between Rome and historic Lutheranism back in the 16th Century? What, actually, is the direction in which the Roman Church is now headed after Vatican II? This study is an attempt to find answers to these questions.

Evangelistic Preaching In The Missouri Synod, Donald Ehlers May 1976

Evangelistic Preaching In The Missouri Synod, Donald Ehlers

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

I decided, therefore, to look further into this matter of evangelistic preaching. What is evangelistic preaching? After arriving at my own definition of evangelistic preaching, I want to determine if evangelistic preaching, so defined, has Biblical precedent. I also want to determine how my definition squares with Lutheran theology on conversion. Based on my definition, I want to develop criteria for evaluating Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod preaching as to its evangelistic nature. Using these criteria, I propose to study sermons written and preached by Missouri Synod pastors.

Key 73: A Case Study In The Doctrine Of Church Fellowship, Curtis Peterson May 1976

Key 73: A Case Study In The Doctrine Of Church Fellowship, Curtis Peterson

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

This study is presented with the hope that it can help establish confessional Lutheran evangelistic and missiological practice on the bedrock of sound, Biblical and Confessional doctrine. The specific theological concern of this presentation is the doctrine of church fellowship. Key 73 is an excellent place to begin such a study because it is especially in evangelism and mission practice that the pressure to unite without prior doctrinal agreement is the greatest. "Conservatives” are particularly vulnerable to these temptations, because of their zeal for reaching the lost with the Gospel. Those who believe that there is salvation in no other …

A History Of The Pacific Northwest District Conference Of The Evangelical Free Church Of America, Robert A. Rapp Apr 1976

A History Of The Pacific Northwest District Conference Of The Evangelical Free Church Of America, Robert A. Rapp

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

The Evangelical Free Church of America is a merger. It should be noted that the Free Church groups that merged in 1950 to form the Evangelical Free Church of America, each had early beginnings in the Northwest.

The first Free Evangelical witness in the Pacific Northwest occurred in the decade of the 1880s, following the historic meetings of organization at Boone, Iowa, and Boston, Massachusetts in 1884. The first churches of both the Swedish and Norwegian-Danish groups were centered in the Seattle-Tacoma area. Progress and growth were impeded in those early days by language and distance barriers. By the time …

An Analysis Of The Salt Program, James R. Tusant Apr 1976

An Analysis Of The Salt Program, James R. Tusant

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

"We are all parts of Christ's body, and it takes every one of us to make it complete, for we each have difficult work to do." Romans 12:4, The Living Bible.

As Christians we are the body of Christ. Our calling as individuals and our mission as a church will be accomplished only so well as each of us, as parts of the body, are functioning in ministry. We each have God-given gifts and we are called to use these gifts in service to each other and the world. This concept of lay ministry and its importance in the life …

A Christian Telephone Crisis Intervention Manual, John Calvin Kennington Apr 1976

A Christian Telephone Crisis Intervention Manual, John Calvin Kennington

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

In our society individuals face crisis situations regularly. From the beginning of life to its conclusion in death, a spider in the bathtub or an unkind remark, life moves from one crisis to another. Some things cause small emotional disturbances while others cause permanent psychological damage. What ever the cause, no crisis is small to the person going through it, and finding the resolution can become an all-consuming task. The problem of dealing with such emergencies is not new. Every generation has had to grapple with crises.

Some Educational Aspects Of The Music Training Program Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 1935-1969, Grant L. Anderson Apr 1976

Some Educational Aspects Of The Music Training Program Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 1935-1969, Grant L. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

This study consisted of two parts: (a) an historical description of the music classes, divided into three time periods for comparison and explanation, and (b) an evaluation of the effort determined from questionnaire sampling of teachers, students and stake music leaders. Historically, music courses for beginning and advanced organists and conductors were organized and maintained by the General Music Committee of the Church, designed to improve musical attitudes and performance in religious services. Many thousands completed the short, comprehensive classes, which offered an opportunity to study and prepare for church music service.

Findings indicated that successful courses were given in …

A Study Of Historical Evidences Related To Lds Church As Reflected In Volumes Xiv Through Xxvi Of The Journal Of Discourses, Terry J. Aubrey Apr 1976

A Study Of Historical Evidences Related To Lds Church As Reflected In Volumes Xiv Through Xxvi Of The Journal Of Discourses, Terry J. Aubrey

Theses and Dissertations

The material in this study is a follow-up of a thesis done by Paul C. Richards entitled, "A Study of Evidences Related to LDS Church History as Reflected in Volumes I through XIII of the Journal of Discourse." That same basic format has been employed in treating the last thirteen volumes of the Discourses.

The Discourses contains addresses delivered by General Authorities of the LDS Church and others from 1854 to 1886. Until Richards did his thesis, no one had compiled an index of those volumes that dealt exclusively with history related to the LDS Church. This study …

Biblical Servanthood: A Pattern For Christian Life And Ministry, Wayne Schock Mar 1976

Biblical Servanthood: A Pattern For Christian Life And Ministry, Wayne Schock

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

Excerpt: "Between secular and Christian codes of conduct there has always been a distinction regarding the ideal behavior and attitude. This is especially true in regards to how we see ourselves in relation to others. Friedrich Nietzsche, in the last part of the nineteenth century, proclaimed a new philosophy of man which claimed that the strong were justified in the exploitation of the weak, that the weak were in fact to be used by the strong and to serve the strong. He differentiated between "slave-morality" and "master-morality", and idealized the latter, and judged the "slave-morality" to be inferior and for …

A Comparative Analysis Of Pastoral Counseling Practices In Selected Protestant Churches, John C. Simmons Mar 1976

A Comparative Analysis Of Pastoral Counseling Practices In Selected Protestant Churches, John C. Simmons

Western Evangelical Seminary Theses

As a professional discipline pastoral counseling has increasingly grown toward full maturity. The literature available in the field is vast. A great many books describe the various methods and techniques of pastoral counseling. It is not at all difficult for the student serious in cultivating personal attitudes conducive to the role of pastoral counseling to discover suggestions and directives in the literature. In addition, professional journals on pastoral counseling deal with a wide range of topics from the fields of psychiatry, psychology, and counseling. These journals also deal with the integration of psychotherapeutic theory and theological concepts, and they keep …

The Development Of The Mission Of The Church In Acts 1-15, James Heining Feb 1976

The Development Of The Mission Of The Church In Acts 1-15, James Heining

Master of Divinity Thesis

This study was undertaken so that the writer would achieve a greater understanding of the development of the mission of the church as portrayed by Luke in the Acts of the Apostles. Casual reading of Acts reveals many councils, disputes, and discussions. One could get the impression that the early apostles were a diverse lot, and that the church only developed as it did because the strongest wills won the battles. Revelation is a prominent feature in Acts. To what extent did that influence the direction taken? Is it true as some have claimed that Acts can only be trusted …

The Development And Significance Of Confirmation In The Lutheran Church, Richard Rist Feb 1976

The Development And Significance Of Confirmation In The Lutheran Church, Richard Rist

Master of Divinity Thesis

In the past few years it has come to the attention of many people that the practice of confirmation in the Lutheran Church may need some revision, or At, least some restudy, in order for it to remain in a proper perspective that would be a clear witness to the Holy Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions. The purpose of this study is to explore the rite of confirmation as practiced in the Lutheran Church. Much emphasis will be given to the development of confirmation from the early Church until the present practice of Lutheran confirmation in the United States. This …

’ΑδαπάΩ ΘςλέΩ (Agapáō And Philéō Romanized Form) In John, James Lindemann Feb 1976

’ΑδαπάΩ ΘςλέΩ (Agapáō And Philéō Romanized Form) In John, James Lindemann

Master of Divinity Thesis

The point in question is a hard one to settle, because the outcome depends entirely upon where one stands in his approach to the Bible in general and to John in particular. One may see a passage as demonstrating the simplicity of John, while another sees great subtlety and complexity, meanwhile a third sees nothing in the passage at all. Sometimes it’s because the person hasn't looked at all the data concerning the passage in question, and therefore needs to widen his outlook. One goal of this paper, then, is to investigate as much data and interpretations as are available …
