Alternatives To Meaninglessness In Ken Kesey's "Sometimes A Great Notion", Dennis L. Beckmann Aug 1976

Alternatives To Meaninglessness In Ken Kesey's "Sometimes A Great Notion", Dennis L. Beckmann

Student Work

At first glance, Ken Kesey appears to be a contemporary prophet of doom. His characters find little meaning in life, as each day brings only hopelessness and despair. For each of these characters, there are many causes of and responses to the problem of meaninglessness. The common denominator which links all of Kesey’s characters, and perhaps all men, is that they cannot progress towards any kind of satisfactory existence until some meaning for life is found.

Adrienne Rich: A Woman's Perspective, Marjorie Waterman Apr 1976

Adrienne Rich: A Woman's Perspective, Marjorie Waterman

Student Work

In both style and theme, Adrienne Rich represents a provocative figure in contemporary poetry. Her ability to transcend mere transcription of her own experience sets are apart from most poets writing today. Penetrating insight, the ability to draw precise analogies and a creative sense of the language take her writing beyond polemics. In the tradition of Walt Whitman, Rich regards words as parts of reality, as well as symbols for it. Consequently, her language is like life, dynamic, vigorous, combining heterogenous elements. She is comfortable mixing classical references with contemporary. Her poetry incorporates scientific jargon, foreign phrases, and American slang. …

Flannery O'Connor's Mystical Salvation Through External And Internal Conflicts., Donna Lou Walker

Student Work

Flannery O'Connor died in 1963 when she was thirty-nine. Her life and her career were short. Her canon consists of thirty-one short stories, two novels, and a scattered number of essays which were collected after her death and published under the title Mystery and Manners. An O'Connor story typically deals with man, the evil within, the misplaced emphasis on external "goodness," and man's final integration with God which comes when …

English-Vietnamese Translation: An Internship, Blaine L. Hart

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The art of translation lies in a literary limbo, subservient to the creativity and expressions of others. Yet in attempting to bridge two different languages and cultures, it entails unique problems as difficult as those encountered in any other literary activity.

The following is the report of a project carried out with the Translation Department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the fall of 1975 as a senior Honors project in fulfillment of requirements for graduation from the Honors Program at U.S.U. Since this internship itself formed the bulk of my project, the following is presented …
