A Proof Of Convergence For The Tridiagonal Ql Algorithm In Floating-Point Arithmetic, James George Sanderson Dec 1976

A Proof Of Convergence For The Tridiagonal Ql Algorithm In Floating-Point Arithmetic, James George Sanderson

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Numerous routines are available to find the eigenvalues of a real symmetric tridiagonal matrix. Since it is known to converge in exact arithmetic, the tridiagonal QL algorithm with origin shift is widely used. Here we analyze the algorithm in floating-point arithmetic. This analysis suggests two modifications to the EISPACK implementation TQLl that enable one to prove correctness and hence convergence of the routine.

Also, it is known that the implicit and explicit versions of the QL algorithm produce the same results in exact arithmetic. A counter-example to the floating-point analog of this theorem is presented.

Potentiostatic Studies Of The Oxide Growth Rate Law For The Alkaline Silver Electrode ; Iii. The Determination Of Ionic Transport In Silver Oxide Using Radiotracer Techniques With Ag[Superscript 110m], Reed Harold Chase

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of ultrasonic vibration on the anodic oxidation of silver foil in KOH was studied. An increase in charging capacity of approximately 20% was found to be the result of cavitation erosion. Silver wire was exposed to tension and torsion during oxidation but no change in charge acceptance was caused by these stresses. The oxide growth rate on silver foil electrodes was compared to rate equations that have been proposed for other metals. Uhlig's equations for the growth of semiconductor oxides was found to describe most of the data. The data did not fit other rate equations. Determination of …

Leaf Epidermal Transmittance Of Ultraviolet Radiation And Its Implication For Plant Sensitivity To Ultraviolet-Radiation Injury, Ronald Robberecht Dec 1976

Leaf Epidermal Transmittance Of Ultraviolet Radiation And Its Implication For Plant Sensitivity To Ultraviolet-Radiation Injury, Ronald Robberecht

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Leaf epidermal transmittance of ultraviolet radiation (280-400 nm) was examined in several plant species to determine the capability of the epidermis to attenuate solar ultraviolet radiation. Epidermal samples were mechanically isolated and examined with a spectroradiometer/integrating sphere for transmittance. A survey of 25 species exposed to natural insolation was conducted. Although the species differed in life form, habitat type, and epidermal characteristics, epidermal transmittance was generally less than 10%. Ultraviolet radiation was attenuated 95 to 99% in more than half of the species. In 16 species, flavonoid and related pigments in the epidermis accounted for 20 to 57% of the …

Voltammetric And Electrochemical Kinetic Studies Of The Halides And Halogens At A Platinum Rotating Ring-Disk Electrode In Anhydrous Acetic Acid, Donald Harrison Cranney Dec 1976

Voltammetric And Electrochemical Kinetic Studies Of The Halides And Halogens At A Platinum Rotating Ring-Disk Electrode In Anhydrous Acetic Acid, Donald Harrison Cranney

Theses and Dissertations

The electrochemical behavior of the iodine-iodide couple was investigated in both basic and neutral acetic acid solutions at a platinum rotating ring-disk electrode. Voltammetric curves were obtained and discussed. Various kinetic parameters were determined and by comparing to theoretical kinetic parameters a probable reaction mechanism was deduced. The mechanism that best fit experimental results is the following I- + S = I(S) + e- I(S) + I- = I2 + S + e (slow). The electrochemical behavior of bromine, bromide, and chloride was also investigated in the same media. Voltammetric curves were recorded and discussed with emphasis on the hysteresis …

A Study Of Selected Photo Fries Rearrangements, Elwood Lloyd Loveridge Dec 1976

A Study Of Selected Photo Fries Rearrangements, Elwood Lloyd Loveridge

Theses and Dissertations

The Fries rearrangement of phenyl esters is reviewed and compared to the reaction when light is the source of energy. The products are different due to different mechanism of reaction. Light energy causes either free radical or concerted reactions. The S-phenylthiol esters and anilides were studied also. Although many of the rearrangements are the same, we did not see any alkyl migration nor decarboxylation type reactions with either the sulfur or nitrogen compounds. Three papers have been published from this work: Bradshaw, J. S., Knudsen, R. D. and Loveridge, E. L., J. Org. Chem., 35, 1219 (1970); Bradshaw, J. S., …

Chlorine Distribution In The Idaho Batholith, Laurence Stewart Istas Nov 1976

Chlorine Distribution In The Idaho Batholith, Laurence Stewart Istas

Dissertations and Theses

Chlorine is thought to play a major role in the mobilization and concentration of base metals in the formation of ore deposits. The regional distribution of chlorine in the Idaho Batholith was studied to see if this could be related to mineralization or metallic provinces. One hundred forty-eight whole-rock samples, mineral separates, and standards were analyzed for chlorine by x-ray fluorescence.

The expected concentration of chlorine in the biotite fraction was not found. The chlorine was not significantly water leachable from the whole rock samples following normal grinding. The Idaho Batholith as a source for mineralizing chlorine was not established. …

Long-Distance Turbidite Correlations In The Horseshoe Abyssal Plain, William H. Hoyt Nov 1976

Long-Distance Turbidite Correlations In The Horseshoe Abyssal Plain, William H. Hoyt

Geology Theses and Dissertations

Few studies on modern abyssal plain turbidites have attempted to assess the lateral extent of individual units and few have therefore been able to provide any information on the evolution of turbidity deposits across long abyssal plain distances. In the 4755 m-deep Horseshoe Abyssal Plain, ten distinct lithologic units (six of these Iberian Peninsula-derived turbidites) were delineated in nine piston cores on the basis of stratigraphic position, thickness (range of 20 cm to greater than 500 cm), color, sediment type, sedimentary structures, x-ray mineralogy, and the ubiquitous presence of units in all abyssal plain and supplying canyon piston cores. In …

Seasonal Distribution And The Retention Of Some Decapod Crustacean Larvae Within The Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, Joseph William Goy Oct 1976

Seasonal Distribution And The Retention Of Some Decapod Crustacean Larvae Within The Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, Joseph William Goy

OES Theses and Dissertations

Planktonic stages or 45 genera and species or decapod larvae were identified and staged from samples taken over a three year period in the lower portion and entrance area or Chesapeake Bay. The distribution of each larval stage of the decapod crustaceans found in the bay was determined and from this, the extent of the respective breeding season was deduced. In 1975, samples were taken monthly from stations along a transect at the baymouth, both at the surface and bottom. Two stations were also occupied over the tidal cycle in daylight and darkness. Evidence is presented that larvae of some …

OES Theses and Dissertations

Sediment and bottom water samples from seven stations at the Chesapeake Elizabeth sewage outfall, Virginia Beach, Virginia were collected in order to evaluate the effect of the outfall on benthic foraminifera. The top centimeter of sediment was analyzed for living and total (live plus dead) foraminiferal densities, chlorophyll a, sediment grain size, ATP, percentage of silt and clay, and total organic carbon. Bottom water salinity, temperature, and ammonia were also analyzed.

Living foraminiferal density increased from March to July and with distance from the outfall. Total foraminiferal density also increased from March to July. The set of environmental variables was …

The Effects Of Dredging On The Stability Of An Ebb-Tidal Delta, Lynnhaven Inlet, Virginia, Donald Keith Riggenbach Oct 1976

The Effects Of Dredging On The Stability Of An Ebb-Tidal Delta, Lynnhaven Inlet, Virginia, Donald Keith Riggenbach

OES Theses and Dissertations

A channel was dredged in 1965 through the ebb-tidal delta of Lynnhaven Inlet, Virginia. The purpose of this study was to determine if this channel has affected the morphological configuration of the delta. It was proposed that the channel caused the dynamically stable delta to become unstable and change its morphology.

Bathymetric comparisons of seven surveys during the last 122 years, including one conducted during this investigation, show that prior to 1962 and the dredging operations, the delta had become dynamically stable. The present survey shows that the delta has changed its shape in response to the interaction of the …

Biostratigraphy Of The Snowshoe Formation (Jurassic) In The Izee Area, Grant County, Oregon, Paul Lawrence Smith

Dissertations and Theses

Using the standard Jurassic zonal scheme, this work attempts to determine the ages of the four members of the Snowshoe Formation that crop out in the Izee area. As a corollary, regional correlations are possible. The stratigraphic relationship between the Snowshoe Formation, the subjacent Hyde Formation and the superjacent Trowbridge Formation is also investigated.

Over one thousand fossils were collected from five stratigraphic sections and eight localities. The sections were measured using tape and compass techniques and the relative stratigraphic ranges of the fossils calculated using a computer program written specifically for this project. The ammonite fauna, dominated by the …

An Fe (Iii) - Initiated Oxidase Reaction With Ferroxidase-Ii, Glenn Alexander Hegamyer

Master's Theses

A reaction involving iron as an intermediary electron carrier for the coupling of electron transfer from an endogenous substrate to ferroxidase-I has been proposed.

The enzymic nature of the reacti on has been established and studies with iron chelating agents have demonstrated the involvement of Fe(III). The kinetic parameters of ferroxidase-11 with Fe (lll) were found to be quite similar to those previously established for Fe(Il). The participation by the copper associated with ferroxi dase-11 was ascertained by use of the copper chelating agent, diethyl -di thio-carbamate .

A variety of substances normally found in blood were surveyed as possible …

The method has been applied to the determination of ionization for water, acetic acid, benzoic acid, and phenol and the solubility product constant for silver chloride in mixtures of water with methanol, ethanol, acetone, tetrahydrofuran, and p-dioxane containing from 0 to 70 mass percent organic co-solvent at several temperatures between 10 and 40°C. Results are used to study the thermodynamics of ionization in each mixture which is discussed relative to various …

The Intermolecular Potential And Vibrational Relaxation Of The Ar-Co System, Gregory Allen Parker Aug 1976

The Intermolecular Potential And Vibrational Relaxation Of The Ar-Co System, Gregory Allen Parker

Theses and Dissertations

The angle, distance and vibration dependence of the Ar-CO intermolecular potential is calculated using the electron gas model to obtain the short range interaction which is smoothly joined onto the long range van der Waals tail which is obtained from accurate C_6, C_7, and C_8 coefficients. Our calculated second interaction virial coefficients are compared with experiment and with a simple adjustment of the Ar-CO potential an excellent agreement is obtained. Our spherically averaged potential is also in excellent agreement with a spherical potential inferred from high energy scattering data. Simplified expressions for the scattering amplitude and differential cross section are …

Electrical Conductivity Of Thin Lecithin-Cholesterol Membranes Due To 2,4-D, 2,4-Db, 2,4,5-T And 2,4-Dcp, Malkanthi Paulis Jul 1976

Electrical Conductivity Of Thin Lecithin-Cholesterol Membranes Due To 2,4-D, 2,4-Db, 2,4,5-T And 2,4-Dcp, Malkanthi Paulis

Dissertations and Theses

The effect of the following pesticides on DC electrical conductivity of lecithin-cholesterol membranes has been studied: endothall, paraquat, diquat, 2,4-D, 2,4-DB, 2,4,5-T, 2,4-DCP. It has been found that the ions of endothall, paraquat and diquat are essentially membrane impermeable and that they do not bind to the membrane surface. In contrast, 2,4-D, 2,4-DB, 2,4,5-T and 2,4-DCP induce electrical conductivity in lecithincholesterol membranes and in addition they also cause an increase in the nonactin-K+ membrane conductivity.

The compounds 2,4-D, 2,4-DB, 2,4,5-T and 2,4-DCP basically behave as class II uncouplers. The kinetic scheme of charge transfer across the membrane, based on …

Stratigraphy, Structure, And Petrology Of The Snoqualmie Pass Area, Washington, Lawrence A. Chitwood Jul 1976

Stratigraphy, Structure, And Petrology Of The Snoqualmie Pass Area, Washington, Lawrence A. Chitwood

Dissertations and Theses

The Snoqualmie pass area lies about 50 mi (80 km) east of Seattle, Washington, along the crest of the Cascade Range. Five stratified units, forming a composite section over 22,000 ft (6700 m) thick, are recognized in the area. They were deformed and later intruded by granodiorite and quartz monzonite porphyry of the Snoqualmie batholith (middle Miocene). The oldest unit, the Denny Formation (Permian), 7000 ft (2100 m) thick, consists of interstratified basalt, andesite and dacite volcanic rocks and limestone and chert beds. This formation is unconformably overlain by a thick conformable sequence of early Tertiary strata which are subdivided, …

An Abstract Matrix Model: The Column Model, Tomas Eufracio Salazar Jul 1976

An Abstract Matrix Model: The Column Model, Tomas Eufracio Salazar

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

In this dissertation we introduce an abstract model for matrix theory, The Column Model. We investigate some properties of the special class of partially ordered linear algebras that satisfy the conditions of the Model. We use the order structure of the Model to obtain some results on: idempotents in the Model, nonnegative elements of the Model having nonnegative generalized inverses, factor theorems in the Model and concepts in the Model that are related to the usual notion of eigenvalues of an m-by-m matrix. Since the set of m-by-m matrices belongs to the special class of partially ordered linear algebras satisfying …

Solid-Liquid Phase Equilibria In Systems Of (I) Para-Xylene, (Ii) Mesitylene, And (Iii) N,N-Dimethylformamide ; Excess Volume Determination In Systems Containing Cyclohexane ; Calculations Of Activities For The N-Hexane + Cyclohexane System, John F. Moellmer

Theses and Dissertations

Solid-liquid phase equilibria studies were used to investigate possible compolllld formation in solutions of (i) para-xylene, (ii) mesitylene, and (iii) N,N-dimethyl-formamide (DMF) with mono- and di- halobenzenes that were selected to give a wide range of acceptor properties. Solid 1:1 intermolecular compounds were identified from solutions of p-C_6H_4F_2 with mesitylene, p-C_6H_4Br_2 with p-xylene, and p-C_6H_4Cl_2 with p-xylene. The results suggest that compound formation occurs because of favorable geometry rather than a charge transfer process. A vibrating tube densimeter was used to determine, with high precision, the densities and subsequently excess volumes of mixing of the n-hexane plus cyclohexane system. Temperature …
