Opinions Toward Automated Information Retrieval Among Reference Librarians: A National Survey, Danuta A. Nitecki
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to identify opinions among members of the American Library Association (ALA), Reference and Adult Services Division (RASD) toward automated information retrieval services. Specifically, the primary objectives were to identify prevalent viewpoints concerning the role of librarians in relation to such services and to determine the practical needs of the profession to better cope with the new technology. A secondary objective was to experimentally test the effect of two variables on response rate. These variables were perceived prestige of sender and incentive for the respondent.

An Experimental Study Of The Effects Of Physical Attractiveness Of Defendants In A Simulated Jury Setting, Dennis Alan Ashley
Communication ETDs
The subjects for this experiment were chosen from seven undergraduate beginning Speech Communication classes at The University of New Mexico. These subjects were asked to look at either an attractive, neither-attractive-nor-unattractive, or unattractive person who was posing as a defendant in a negligent homicide case, and sentence that defendant to from one to twenty-five years in prison for the crime.
A 3x2 factorial design was constructed, testing two variables -- level of physical attractiveness (attractive, neither attractive- nor-unattractive, unattractive), and mode of presentation of the defendant (photograph, in person). Different effects of these two variables were measured by comparing the …

Verbal Strategies In Small Group Communication, Christine Marie Bunsick
Dissertations and Theses
The purpose of this study is to investigate certain types of verbal communications people use in small task-oriented groups. The verbal communications analyzed are certain phrases a speaker may use prior to the central idea of the statement uttered. These verbal communications are referred to as "language tactics".
Language tactics are defined here as specific phrases a speaker may use to excuse, justify, rationalize, or interpret for the listener(s) what the speaker is about to say before saying it. The purpose of this study is to look at language tactics as they are used by members of small task-oriented groups …

A Comparative Study Of Aristotle's Poetics And Ezra Pound's Abc Of Reading, Michael P. Hagensick
Dissertations and Theses
This paper is a comparative study of Aristotle's Poetics and Ezra Pound's ABC of Reading to discover and determine values in literature, especially poetry, which reflect on the nature and the manifestations of human communication. I feel that scholars in the field of communication can benefit personally and academically from exposure to those poets who have expressed themselves on the reasons or the manners in which people communicate. To pursue this question requires the use of a guide to poetry, a method by which I can learn to recognize a poem on sight; so that when it comes to discourse …

Electroacoustic Impedance Measurements: A Learning Packet, Michael J. Cevette
Electroacoustic Impedance Measurements: A Learning Packet, Michael J. Cevette
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this paper is to provide an instructional format in the presentation of the clinical application of electroacoustic impedance measurements. Journal articles and impedance procedural booklets were used as a source of data for the information contained in the learning packet. Fundamentals of acoustic theory were treated to show the conceptual relationship of acoustic impedance and acoustic admittance. The terminology, normative data, and clinical interpretation of static acoustic impedance measures were examined. Diagnostically significant variables of the tympanogram were related to the audiometric-medical status of the patient. Clinical application of the acoustic reflex was investigated through descriptions of …

A Descriptive Study Of The Listening Skills Of Chief Probation Officers For The State Of Nebraska, Patricia A. Crosby
Student Work
Twenty years ago the place of listening in our educational system was neglected. Instruction in listening skills, even at the college level, was virtually nonexistent. Today, at all educational levels, training in listening is "coming of age." Listening is beginning to be recognized as an area of important communication skills. More important, it is being considered as fundamental skills which can and must be taught.

Man's perception of his personal space can be compared to a basic concept in the study of animal behavior, territoriality, defined by Hall as "behavior by which an organism characteristically lays claim to an area and defends it against members of its own species" (1966, p. 7). Territoriality was first described in 1920 by the English ornithologist H. E. Howard. He recognized events that had been noted by naturalists as far back as the seventeenth century as manifestations of territoriality (Hall, 1966). --From "Chapter 1 Introduction and Rationale."
