Influence Of Turbidity On The Stratification Development Of A Deep Water Reservoir., David Allen Prouty Jan 1976

Influence Of Turbidity On The Stratification Development Of A Deep Water Reservoir., David Allen Prouty

Masters Theses

"The influence of turbidity on the diurnal temperature distribution and thermocline development in a deep water impoundment which is exposed to heating and cooling loads by convection, evaporation, and radiation is examined analytically. The diurnal behavior of the solar load, directional and spectral, is used with an isotropic multiple scattering model to simulate the attenuation of solar flux by turbid water. The diurnal behavior of the ambient temperature, humidity and wind speed were mathematically modeled to simulate the local (Phelps Co.) spring time of the year. The combined conduction and radiation energy transfer through the water was treated as a …

The Unities Of Time And Place In Sixteenth-Century Theater And Criticism, Dana Stone Clarke Jan 1976

The Unities Of Time And Place In Sixteenth-Century Theater And Criticism, Dana Stone Clarke

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

The world stage or, to borrow the title from one of Calderón’s plays, "el gran teatro del mundo," was a favorite metaphor of Renaissance writers. It appears in a great number of works of many different kinds, sometimes being extensively developed as a central structural device in the work itself, as in Laurentius Beyerlinck’s encyclopedic Theatrum vitae humanae (frontispiece Figure I). Another notable example is the “Fabula de homine” (c. 1518) written by the humanist scholar Luis Vives. The fable is an eloquent panegyric on the sublimity of Man, his “divine mind,” bliss-giving “powers of perception,” “handsomely shaped” body, and …

Social Problems And Collaborative Planning: Toward A Theory And Model Of Social Planning, Marjorie M. Ille Jan 1976

Social Problems And Collaborative Planning: Toward A Theory And Model Of Social Planning, Marjorie M. Ille

Dissertations and Theses

The concern of this dissertation is planning theory and practice; its purpose is to make planning more responsive to the problems of the city. The premise that the study is built on is that social planning must be in harmony with the nature of its subject matter, and that social problems is its subject matter. The supposition is that if we grasp the nature of social problems and build planning theory and practice on these insights, planning efforts will be more relevant and more effective.

The approach is a theoretical one; social problems are the starting point. After urban problems--and …

The Pci Resurgent: 1943-1945, Karen Adele Tosi Jan 1976

The Pci Resurgent: 1943-1945, Karen Adele Tosi

Dissertations and Theses

The Italian Communist Party (PCI) emerged from the chaos of the Italian defeat in 1943 as a powerful and cohesive movement. Based upon organizational development throughout the years of Fascist rule in Italy, plus a combination of vigorous partisan activities and a willingness to compromise politically in exchange for governmental participation, the PCI showed promise for achieving economic and social change in Italy. Conservative countermeasures and Allied pressures, however, diminished the Communist advantage until, by 1947, the Party was no longer represented in the postwar government. The success apparent in the economic arena due to the Christian Democrat's program initiated …

Listener Perception Of Fluent, Breathy, And Imprecisely Articulated Speech Of Stutterers, Diane Carol Campbell Jan 1976

Listener Perception Of Fluent, Breathy, And Imprecisely Articulated Speech Of Stutterers, Diane Carol Campbell

Dissertations and Theses

Because communication involves both a sender of messages, each person could influence the other’s feelings about speaking and listening. The reactions of each member of this communication network will determine how communication will flow in the future. With an understanding of the feedback system between speakers and listeners, researchers have designed management programs which allow the speaker who stutters to develop a new pattern of speech which does not hinder his communication efforts. Fluency is the primary consideration, and normalcy of speech is second. One such program has been devised by Casteel (1974).

In Casteel’s stuttering management program a person …

A Methodology For Determining Mass Movement Susceptibility For Land-Use Planning, Vern Walter Cimmery Jan 1976

A Methodology For Determining Mass Movement Susceptibility For Land-Use Planning, Vern Walter Cimmery

Dissertations and Theses

Land-use planning takes into consideration geologic hazards in order to protect both life and property. One type of geologic hazard is mass movement. Mass movement is a collective term for the downslope movement of mass units of debris e.g., bedrock, soil, and subsurface material, resulting from the influence of gravity and involving transporting media such as ice, snow, water, and air. As population increases, further pressures are placed on existing land use. Many areas once considered unsuitable for development due to steep slope or other physical characteristics are now experiencing problems. These areas, due to their physical characteristics, can be …

Polymerization Of Amino Acids On Kaolinite, Z. Badri Adnani-Gleason Jan 1976

Polymerization Of Amino Acids On Kaolinite, Z. Badri Adnani-Gleason

Dissertations and Theses

In the origin of life on the primitive earth a major step must have involved the condensation of amino acids to form the first polypeptides. Several suggestions as to how this might have occurred have been made by other workers. One of the more appealing proposals is that the polymerization was catalyzed by clay minerals. It has been reported, for example, that L-apartic acid polymerizes significantly faster than D-aspartic in the presence of kaolinite in aqueous suspension at 90˚. In this work an attempt was made to repeat this report and extend the pH range to include values presumably present …

The Role Of American Diplomacy In The Louisiana Purchase, Rebecca Warren Jan 1976

The Role Of American Diplomacy In The Louisiana Purchase, Rebecca Warren

Dissertations and Theses

When a powerful and ambitious nation peacefully transfers almost 600,000,000 acres to a comparatively insignificant nation, the event deserves careful scrutiny and evaluation. The Louisiana Purchase of 1803 was such a transaction. Although events and personalities surrounding the Purchase were complex and numerous, the one factor to be examined here is the role of American diplomacy. The problem is to determine the influence American diplomacy had in securing the Louisiana Purchase.

Mental Illness Among Chinese In The United States: Myth Or Reality?, Alex C. N. Leung Jan 1976

Mental Illness Among Chinese In The United States: Myth Or Reality?, Alex C. N. Leung

Dissertations and Theses

Several mental health professionals have suggested that Chinese in the United States as a group are less subject to mental disorders than other races. Whereas other investigators have also indicated that due to the influences of cultural conflict and racism, Chinese in the United States are under greater emotional distress than members of the host society. When stress from these sources becomes too great, mental health problems are frequently the result.

The purpose of this library research thesis is to review the available research works related with Chinese Americans mental health problems in the hope of seeking answers to the …

An Investigation Of The Performance Of Black Children Age 3.6 To 6.0 On Three Subtests Of The Illinois Test Of Psycholinguistic Abilities, George Edward James Jan 1976

An Investigation Of The Performance Of Black Children Age 3.6 To 6.0 On Three Subtests Of The Illinois Test Of Psycholinguistic Abilities, George Edward James

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to compare language performance on three subtests of the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities (ITPA) of a Black population of children ages three years six months through six years in Portland, Oregon, with the standardizing population of the ITPA. These subtests are Auditory Reception, Grammatic Closure, and Verbal Expression.

The null hypotheses tested were:

  1. There is no difference in scores on the Auditory Reception subtest of the ITPA between the standardizing test population and that of Black children ages three years six months through six years in Portland, Oregon.
  2. There is no difference in …

A Validity Study Of Select Symbol-Referent Relationships Using Semantic Differential Ratings, Stephen Willard Jan 1976

A Validity Study Of Select Symbol-Referent Relationships Using Semantic Differential Ratings, Stephen Willard

Dissertations and Theses

The present research was conducted in order to develop a method useful for measuring the meaning of symbolic material. Using this method an investigation was conducted to test the validity of several personality theories which ascribe meanings to select symbols.

A summary of the major personality theories dealing with symbolic material was conducted . Each theory was briefly presented with a discussion of the methods employed to determine the meanings of symbols. A set of symbol theory considerations was presented which would suggest the necessary components of an objective investigation attempting to be a validity test of symbol meanings predictions.

Symbol And Artifact: Jungian Dynamics At Mcluhan's Technological Interface, Mike Amana Glick Jan 1976

Symbol And Artifact: Jungian Dynamics At Mcluhan's Technological Interface, Mike Amana Glick

Dissertations and Theses

Our goal was to establish some form of interpretation between the analytical work of Carl Jung in depth psychology and the views of Marshall McLuhan regarding the impact of media. It was hoped that such a correlation of contrasting viewpoints would yield additional insight in the study of mass reactions to media.

In accomplishing this purpose a “universe” based upon analytical psychology was juxtaposed with an expressly “McLuhanesque” analysis of media and technological effects. After establishing correlations between the major dynamics of the two systems, several functional conclusions were reached. These are: (1) that media have an inescapable influence, (2) …

The History Of Gun Control In America, Gary W. Hansen Jan 1976

The History Of Gun Control In America, Gary W. Hansen

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis examines the significant gun control legislation enacted in the United States, and the movement to enact it. It is a contention of this thesis that sentiment favoring gun control comes essentially from urban areas which are most remote from America’s frontier heritage, and the common usage of firearms. Sentiment opposing gun control, on the other hand, comes primarily from the West and South which are the areas nearest the frontier heritage. The popularity of firearms in the United States is also due, in large measure, to the pioneer background of this nation. This thesis also contends that firearms …

Isolation And Characterization Of Two Sterols From The Green Alga, Selenastrum Capricornutum, Raymond Mark Owings

Dissertations and Theses

The green alga, Selenastrum capricornutum, was cultured in artificial nutrient medium utilizing five-gallon carboys, each of which contained 16 1. of culture. The algal cells were separated from the nutrient medium by continuous-flow centrifugation at 7500 RPM, and were then lyophilized. The lyophilized cells were extracted by refluxing with ether, acetone, and chloroform:methanol (2:1). Free sterols and sterol esters were separated from the crude extract using preparative thin-layer chromatography. Sterol esters were saponified and both the sterols and the fatty acids were recovered. Individual sterols were separated from the free sterol fraction using argentation thin-layer chromatography. Gas chromatograms, mass spectra, …

The Utilization Of Preventive Health Care Services By Low Income Members Of A Comprehensive Prepaid Health Plan : The Impact Of Outreach Services, Linda Elmlund Mahoney Jan 1976

The Utilization Of Preventive Health Care Services By Low Income Members Of A Comprehensive Prepaid Health Plan : The Impact Of Outreach Services, Linda Elmlund Mahoney

Dissertations and Theses

A reading of recent studies in preventative health care behavior recalls the proverb about the blind men and the elephant: each man is able to describe the part of the animal he is closest to, but none can see, and so none can put their diverse and often contradictory opinions together to come up with an accurate description of the whole elephant. Similarly, in preventative health care studies, each researcher or research group is able to observe the preventative health care utilization patterns of specific populations at particular times, but the conclusions reached are often based on less than complete …

The Negative Effects Of Divorce On The Behavior Of Children, David Hawkins, Karen Lloyd Jan 1976

The Negative Effects Of Divorce On The Behavior Of Children, David Hawkins, Karen Lloyd

Dissertations and Theses

Our study is concerned with the effects of filing for divorce on the behavior of children. We are interested in the adjustment of the child to the changes which occur during separation and divorce, and we maintain the attitude that the lives of children are affected in some way when a marriage or family unit dissolves. A generally accepted belief is that divorce produces negative consequences in the lives of children as shown in their behavior. However, recently a number of studies have suggested that divorce need not be a negative experience, at least to the degree most people feel …

The Impact Of Ssi On The Social Security Administration: An Intraorganizational Study With Interorganizational Ramifications, Patricia A. Parker

Dissertations and Theses

In 1974 a revolutionary new income maintenance program was implemented in the United States. It was revolutionary in style because it provided a federalized income floor for the elderly, blind and disabled, previously provided for under various federal, state, and local welfare programs. The program was called Supplemental Security Income, or SSI. The Social Security Administration, a long-standing institution in the financial community because of old age, survivors and disability insurance (OASDI) benefits, was chosen to administer 551. SS represented a new innovation for the Social Security Administration who had never before had to provide non-work-related benefits to indigents. In …

Need Assessment Methodology, Gerald A. Burns, Janet S. Putnam Jan 1976

Need Assessment Methodology, Gerald A. Burns, Janet S. Putnam

Dissertations and Theses

A need assessment is a systematic process of determining community needs through the comparative analysis of people, problems, and services. Although need assessments of some form have existed since biblical times, it has only been within recent years that their use in social planning has become prominent. This is attributed to the increasing belief in the necessity of pertinent data to make decision-making responsive to community needs.

Ten basic issues should be considered in designing a need assessment, These are: 1) Purpose; 2) Decision-making context; 3) Agency resources; 4) Scope; 5) Future studies; 6) Staff roles; 7) Data collection; 8) …

A Comparison Of Two Articulation Management Approaches, Cindy Sue Sykes Jan 1976

A Comparison Of Two Articulation Management Approaches, Cindy Sue Sykes

Dissertations and Theses

This clinical project sought to examine two different approaches to the treatment of functional articulatory disorders and to implement these two approaches in the actual management of two articulation disordered clients. The two approaches selected were the traditional auditory-stimulus method (Van Riper, 1972) and the sensory-motor approach (McDonald, 1964b) to testing and treatment. It was the intention of this project to compare the results of articulation intervention of the two methods.
