Colonial Markets, Consumers, And Trade: A Comparative Analysis Of Historic Ceramics From The Bluefields Bay Area, Westmoreland, Jamaica, Lacy Risner 2022 Murray State University

Colonial Markets, Consumers, And Trade: A Comparative Analysis Of Historic Ceramics From The Bluefields Bay Area, Westmoreland, Jamaica, Lacy Risner

Murray State Theses and Dissertations

The ceramic assemblages from a British colonial settlement in Bluefields Bay, Jamaica, provide a unique window into the market availability, exchange routes, and consumption patterns of the eighteenth century. This study compares the historic ceramics collected from two sites in Bluefields Bay to one another and to other intra-island (Jamaica), intraregional (Lesser Antilles), and international (North America) colonial and postcolonial sites to reveal patterns of individual and global ceramic consumption and distribution in the emergent capitalist networks and markets of the colonial era. Integrating small British colonial sites into the networks of other more extensive studies focusing primarily on plantations …

Keywords In Caribbean Studies: A Project Statement, Vanessa Pérez-Rosario, Ryan Cecil Jobson 2022 CUNY Queens College

Keywords In Caribbean Studies: A Project Statement, Vanessa Pérez-Rosario, Ryan Cecil Jobson

Publications and Research

Responding to a call for a renewed and reinvigorated project of Caribbean criticism, the Keywords in Caribbean Studies project proposes an examination of the critical vocabulary that shapes our field of study. A genuinely regional Caribbean criticism—one that necessarily encompasses the entirety of the Caribbean Sea and its archipelago, its coastal territories of the South and Central Americas, and their global circuits of migration and diaspora—demands concerted attention to the critical vocabulary with which we engage the region.

The Tancredo Martínez Assassination Attempt: Frances Grant And Communistic Discourses, Nelson Santana 2022 CUNY Bronx Community College

The Tancredo Martínez Assassination Attempt: Frances Grant And Communistic Discourses, Nelson Santana

Publications and Research

The Trujillato (1930-1961) spanned almost four decades, in part, due to a series of tools and mechanisms centered around Trujillo’s influences and networks outside of the Dominican Republic. Trujillo’s international network of spies made it possible for the Trujillato to identify and keep tabs on anyone who threatened Trujillo’s reign. Thus, Trujillo’s tentacles extended beyond the Dominican Republic and into nations and territories such as Costa Rica, Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the United States. In order to combat Trujillo’s network, Dominican exiles embraced non-Dominican allies to combat Trujillo’s tentacles.

This essay is part of a larger project that aims …

El Intento De Asesinato A Tancredo Martínez: Frances Grant Y Los Discursos Comunistas, Nelson Santana 2022 CUNY Bronx Community College

El Intento De Asesinato A Tancredo Martínez: Frances Grant Y Los Discursos Comunistas, Nelson Santana

Publications and Research

The Immigrant Nannies Of New York City: An Examination Of The Friendships Between Nannies And Mother-Employers, Esmeralda Paula 2022 Bard College

The Immigrant Nannies Of New York City: An Examination Of The Friendships Between Nannies And Mother-Employers, Esmeralda Paula

Senior Projects Spring 2022

This ethnography focuses on the emotions of the women of color who elaborated on their experiences working for wealthy, white families in ethnographic interviews. This project is interested in the connections formed between nannies and mother-employers with the goal of better understanding the positionalities of female domestic workers of color. Immigrant populations are frequently depicted by news outlets as overworked, underpaid, and poor. When interacting with nannies, I realized that these women did not consider themselves impoverished despite working in a role that is identifiable with servanthood. The labor that nannies perform calls back to a long tradition of women …

The Washington Consensus: Conceptions Of Power And Failure In Argentina, Samaira G. Wilson 2022 Bard College

The Washington Consensus: Conceptions Of Power And Failure In Argentina, Samaira G. Wilson

Senior Projects Fall 2022

By holding great economic power over smaller states and justifying it by saying they are helping modernize them, the U.S. leaves many countries cleaning up a mess they helped make. The Washington Consensus failed systematically largely because of its failure to understand development in developing countries. The objective of these policies were to increase GDP in Argentina, yet economic growth favored the wealthy which led to more poverty, inequality and unemployment. The responsibility to promote democratic and equitable development, as well as sustained increases in living standards, was completely neglected. Why did U.S. policy fail to deliver on its goals? …

The Struggle For Land In Nineteenth-Century Bolivia: Triangulating Indigenous Demands Between The Republican And Colonial States, Siena Hinshelwood 2022 Claremont Colleges

The Struggle For Land In Nineteenth-Century Bolivia: Triangulating Indigenous Demands Between The Republican And Colonial States, Siena Hinshelwood

Scripps Senior Theses

After Bolivia gained independence from Spain, many colonial systems continued, including the tributary pact between Indigenous peoples and the state. This thesis investigates how Andean communities in the nineteenth century instrumentalized legal systems, especially colonial land titles, to force the republican state to respect Indigenous land rights and all the worldviews they contain. This project looks closely at Indigenous apoderados and their triangulation on behalf of their communities between helpful colonial legacies, the republican state, and their own cosmovision. This connects to continuing movements of rebellion and uprising in Bolivia and the Andes to this day.

Five Hundred African Voices an invaluable resource for scholars, teachers, students, and others wishing to study transatlantic slavery using African Voices.
