Ernst Engelberg (1909-2010): Historian And Anti-Nazi Activist, Mario Kessler
Swiss American Historical Society Review
The life of Ernst Engelberg, historian and anti-Nazi activist, spanned over a century. Born in Imperial Germany, he witnessed World War I, became a political activist during the Weimar Republic, was a refugee during Nazism, and became a leading historian in Communist East Germany, He survived the collapsed of the DDR and he lived for two more decades in the Federal Republic of Germany. Engelberg's itinerary is, therefore, not typical for a professor of history in twentieth-century Germany.

Graven Images, Amish Aesthetics, And The "Affirmative Lie", Laura Fair-Schulz
Swiss American Historical Society Review
"Can I take your picture?" The answer was obvious, but it was a plumb opportunity to observe how the question would be received, Mr. Yoder merely replied, displaying a typical posture- of humility -practiced among the Amish (head slightly bowed but cocked sideways to maintain eye contact): "...we wouldn't appreciate that." There was nothing angry in his voice, denouncing the "worldliness" of the question, but a soft, rehearsed and purposeful tone.

Ufnau An Island In Switzerland's Lake Zurich A Hamlet In The American State Of Texas, 2012 Brigham Young University
Ufnau An Island In Switzerland's Lake Zurich A Hamlet In The American State Of Texas, Martha Kumin-Jurt
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Ufnau Island is a wonderfully quiet place that has kept its uniqueness and unspoilt nature, withstanding the turmoils of time. In 965 AD, Emperor Otto the Great gave the island and other estates bordering Lake Zurich to the Benedictine Abbey of Einsiedeln. His wife, Empress Adelheid, was the grandchild of Reginlinde, the founder of the Ufnau church. We can assume that the Empress prompted her husband to make this donation.

The Military Principles Of The Archduke Carl In The Context Of His Intellectual Antecedents And His Military Reality, Lee W. Eysturlid
Lee W. Eysturlid
The Archduke Carl of Teschen, the premier commander of the Habsburg military between 1793 and 1809, is often misunderstood in his inherent conservatism as a leader, theorist and historian. Too often he is simply seen in the context of his looming contemporaries, Napoleon Bonaparte and Carl von Clausewitz. This paper will look to explore the key political, military and religious theories that the Archduke studied and the potential impact that can be seen in his work, both theoretical and in practice.

The Archduke Carl And The Realities Of Habsburg Warfare From 1793-1814: Less Change Then You Thought, Lee W. Eysturlid
Lee W. Eysturlid
The Archduke Carl of Teschen, victor of Stockach and Aspern, and the Habsburg Monarchy’s most famous commander of the age, was an unrepentant opponent of unlimited war; the type of war which he believed had been released by the forces of the French Revolution. To counter these new so-called realities, he looked to “limit” the impact of war through a combination of the Early Modern re-invention of Roman military principles, appeals to service, and the tenets of Theresian Catholicism. In the end, Carl responded to the “emotional,” read nationalistic, forces of the French with Habsburg revanche. This paper will look …

Programa Mínimo Para A Democracia, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
É sempre salutar discutir a Democracia. É sinónimo dela... Ou que, na sua falta, há quem com ela se preocupe. Contudo, mais que isso nos parece urgente defendê-la. E o programa mínimo de …

Clima Anticonstitucional, Paulo Ferreira Da Cunha
