Southeastern Kentuckians Remain Optimistic Through Great Recession: Growing Concerns About Sprawl, Housing, And Recreational Opportunities, Jessica D. Ulrich 2011 University of New Hampshire

Southeastern Kentuckians Remain Optimistic Through Great Recession: Growing Concerns About Sprawl, Housing, And Recreational Opportunities, Jessica D. Ulrich

The Carsey School of Public Policy at the Scholars' Repository

In May and June of 2007, Carsey Institute researchers surveyed 1,000 randomly selected respondents from Kentucky’s Harlan and Letcher counties, and between November 2010 and January 2011, they returned to survey 1,020 different randomly selected respondents from the same counties. These two Kentucky counties provide a snapshot of perceptions of community and environmental change in a chronically poor rural place. This brief focuses on the questions asked in both surveys to identify area wide (Harlan and Letcher counties combined) changes since the Great Recession. The surveys reveal that the recession has exacerbated concern about many community-level problems including poverty, affordable …

Social Meanings Of Mortality: The Language Of Death And Disease In 19th Century Massachusetts, Jeffrey Keith Beemer 2011 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Social Meanings Of Mortality: The Language Of Death And Disease In 19th Century Massachusetts, Jeffrey Keith Beemer

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the emergence and development of cause-of-death registration in nineteenth-century Massachusetts. I examine the historical, demographic, sociopolitical, and theoretical conditions that gave rise to the first state-implemented cause-of-death registration system in the United States, Massachusetts's vital registration system. Developments in almost every arena of social life during the nineteenth century were shaped in some fashion through disease. The disease ecology changed dramatically during this period shifting from acute infectious to chronic degenerative diseases, which marked the beginning of the epidemiological transition. Registration systems were key components in this transitional period, providing the raw data on which nineteenth-century public …

Resisting Schools, Reproducing Families: Gender And The Politics Of Homeschooling, Brian Paul Kapitulik 2011 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Resisting Schools, Reproducing Families: Gender And The Politics Of Homeschooling, Brian Paul Kapitulik

Open Access Dissertations

The contemporary homeschooling movement sits at the intersection of several important social trends: widespread concern about the effectiveness and safety of public schools, feminist challenges to the patriarchal family structure, anxiety about the state of the family as an institution, and challenging economic conditions. The central concern of this dissertation is to make sense of homeschooling within this broader context. Data were gathered through interviews with forty-five homeschooling parents, approximately half of whom are religious and half of whom are secular. The interviews were organized around three central questions: 1) What are the frames that parents use to justify homeschooling? …

French Postcolonial Nationalism And Afro-French Subjectivities, Yasser A. Munif 2011 University of Massachusetts Amherst

French Postcolonial Nationalism And Afro-French Subjectivities, Yasser A. Munif

Open Access Dissertations

This research examines urban renewal in Clichy-sous-Bois, a suburb of 30,000 inhabitants located in the northeast of Paris. It studies the modalities of spatial racialization, nation building, and subject formation among Afro-French young men living in the city. It also builds on a world-historical perspective to explore the diasporic webs in which the lives of Afro-French are embedded. Taking spatial racialization as a point of entry, the study attempts to understand how governmental strategies and urban policies regulate lives and residential patterns in the city. Three lines of investigation are pursued: 1) an examination of Afro-French racialization and genealogies; 2) …

Defining Legal Parenthood: The Intersection Of Gender And Sexual Identity In U.S. Child Custody Decisions, 2003-2009, Kristina A. Watkins 2011 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Defining Legal Parenthood: The Intersection Of Gender And Sexual Identity In U.S. Child Custody Decisions, 2003-2009, Kristina A. Watkins

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation examines the contested terrain of family through qualitative analysis of child custody decisions. Legal parenthood was historically based on the heteronormative family ideal of a legally married monogamous heterosexual couple and their biogenetically related children. In the context of diverse family forms of the twenty-first century, however, courts struggle to draw the boundary lines of legal parenthood. Although previous research has examined the role of parental gender or sexual identity on child custody decisions, my research fills an important gap, as I analyze variations in gender, sexual identity, and path to parenthood for heterosexual, gay, lesbian, and bisexual …

A Multicultural Grassroots Effort To Reduce Ethnic And Racial Social Distance Among Middle School Students, Christopher Donoghue, David Brandwein 2011 Montclair State University

A Multicultural Grassroots Effort To Reduce Ethnic And Racial Social Distance Among Middle School Students, Christopher Donoghue, David Brandwein

Department of Sociology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Raising tolerance for people of different ethnic and racial groups is the goal of the Multicultural Mosaic program, a grass-roots multicultural education effort initiated by a small group of middle school teachers in a private school in the northeast. After years of enjoying the comforts of a modern, but European-based, curriculum, these teachers took the initiative to pursue an ambitious transformation of their entire school's approach to pedagogy. Not only would the English teachers introduce new texts by foreign authors and the social studies teachers introduce new materials on the history of non-Western cultures, but also the teachers of mathematics …

What About Boys? An Initial Exploration Of Sexually Exploited Boys In Cambodia, Glenn Miles, Heather Blanch 2011 Director of Prevention, Love146

What About Boys? An Initial Exploration Of Sexually Exploited Boys In Cambodia, Glenn Miles, Heather Blanch

Third Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking, 2011

Sexual exploitation of children has tended to focus on girls. The majority of organizations and service providers for sexually exploited children cater to the needs of girls. However, boys are also vulnerable to sexual exploitation. Limited research has been done to determine the prevalence of sexual exploitation of boys, but what has been done suggests that the issue is worthy of more attention. This study hopes to provide a baseline of information about young men who are being sexually exploited in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. In gathering and analyzing data about these young men, the researchers hope to promote awareness about …

“What About Boys?” The Sexual Exploitation Of Boys And Young Men In Asia, Glenn Miles, Heather Blanch, Jasmir Thakur

Third Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking, 2011

Sexual exploitation of boys and young men continues to be an invisible problem with inadequate research to determine the prevalence and outcomes. Where research has been done then the focus has primarily on HIV prevalence and other risk factors including violence is not adequately considered. Why is this? This research looks at two locations in Mumbai, India and Phnom Penh, Cambodia where some base line data has been obtained. Around 50 boys in Phnom Penh and 102 boys in Mumbai were interviewed. The results demonstrate a level of vulnerability that dispels the myth that sexual exploitation of boys is vastly …

The Chab Dai Study On (Re-) Integration: Researching The Life-Cycle Of Survivors Of Sexual Exploitation And Trafficking -- Mid 2011 Report, Glenn Miles, Siobhan Miles

Third Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Human Trafficking, 2011

In 2010 Chab Dai (translation “Hands Together”) started a ten-year longitudinal ‘Butterfly’ research study in Cambodia with the aim to understand the re-integration process of children/young people who have experienced sexual exploitation and trafficking. The preliminary phase was conducted during 2010 and the focus was to explain the research to potential After-care shelters and stakeholders working in the field. During this phase a preliminary survey of interested and potential Aftercare shelters was conducted in order to understand their perspective of (re-) integration and how their programs operated. Focus group work with girls from three shelters and later one with boys …

¿Gobernadores Eternos? Un Análisis Comparativo De Las Reelecciones En Argentina Y Brasil, Augusto Reina, Lucas Jolias 2011 SelectedWorks

¿Gobernadores Eternos? Un Análisis Comparativo De Las Reelecciones En Argentina Y Brasil, Augusto Reina, Lucas Jolias

Augusto Reina

Welfare And Foreign Aid Practices In The Contemporary United States: A Governmentalstudy, Philippe Fournier 2011 Université de Montréal

Welfare And Foreign Aid Practices In The Contemporary United States: A Governmentalstudy, Philippe Fournier

Philippe Fournier

This article aims to expose the main governmental shifts in recent Americanhistory (1961-2000) by examining two programs: the Assistance to Families with DependentChildren (AFDC) and the Agency for International development (US-AID). Through the ex-ploration of primary and secondary sources, we analyse the production, organisation andcirculation of governmental practices in the realms of both domestic and foreign policy. In theAmerican context, practices of government typically revolve around freedom, efficiency mo-dels and individual responsibility. Throughout the analysis, we find that the general critiqueswhich have guided reforms and experiments in both areas converge around the same ele-ments. This testifies to the fact that …
