Immigration from Asia and Latin America has rapidly changed the race and ethnic composition of the non-White population in the United States. This dissertation examines the question of race/ethnicity, nativity, and how acculturation and socioeconomic characteristics impact residential outcomes for Asian and Hispanic immigrants, a process often termed as residential assimilation. It also tests the effectiveness of spatial assimilation, segmented assimilation, and resurgent ethnicity theories for understanding residential segregation across metropolitan neighborhoods. Three sets of analyses are presented in this dissertation. In 2015, the Northern Chumash Tribal Council submitted a National Marine Sanctuary Nomination to establish the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary– a means by which to ensure the protection of one of the most culturally and biologically diverse coastlines in the world. On October 5, 2015, John Armor of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) responded to the nomination, adding it to the inventory of areas NOAA may consider in the future for national marine sanctuary designation.

We Count Oregon is the first woman-of-color-led statewide census campaign in Oregon purposefully designed to undermine exclusionary census norms. The We Count Oregon 2020 campaign reflects the values, cultures, and needs of hard-to- count communities. In Oregon, these are primarily communities of color (including Black, Asian and Pacific Islanders, Latinx, Indigenous and native communities), LGBTQI communities, children under the age of five, disabled people, rural communities, and people experiencing homelessness. The U.S. population has changed significantly since the 1950s, becoming markedly more racially diverse. Still, a large portion of America’s neighborhoods remain racially segregated – even in large, racially diverse cities, such as Philadelphia (Logan & Stults, 2011). As a result, there is a well-established body of research that has shown that residential segregation consistently produces negative effects for neighborhoods (Massey & Denton, 1993). In January 2020, Nebraska Community Foundation began working with Center for Public Affairs Research at the University of Nebraska at Omaha to co-create a survey designed to explore young people’s perceptions and perspectives of their Nebraska hometowns. Over 1,000 high school students responded to the online survey which was administered in rural communities of varying sizes and geography between January and May 2020. The results of the Youth Survey begin to reveal the priorities, values, and desires of these individuals as well as factors that may influence their decision to return to or remain in Greater Nebraska in the future. …

Prevalence Of Left-Handedness In China 2011: Small-Area Estimates, Hongwei Xu

Nationally representative survey data and small-area estimation techniques are used to assess the geographic prevalence of left-handedness in China 2011. Measures of individuals’ handedness are their self-reported dominant hand and their hand grip strength, which yield four estimates of left-handed prevalence, and these statistics are recorded at the provincial level. These estimates concord with one another. There are several geographic clusters of high-prevalence rates of left-handers located in ethnic minority-designated autonomous areas or historically revolutionary base areas, which may reflect a deep-rooted sense of defiance to authorities and promote such cultural values as individual autonomy and equality among local people.

Although abortion became legal four decades ago, Americans remain staunchly divided over its acceptability. While researchers have been interested in the factors shaping abortion attitudes, there are almost no reviews of this work. We examine the factors shaping Americans’ abortion attitudes and assess the state of published peer-reviewed articles in this area over the last 15 years. Using a mixed-methods systematic review, we analyze and critique the findings from 116 journal articles that have examined attitudes about abortion between 2001 and 2016. This interdisciplinary thesis explores the foodways of six Syrian migrant families, both immigrants and refugees, in California and the role that culinary customs play in their homing process. The homing process is the dynamic way in which people create home according to their life circumstances: food, eating, and culinary customs after migration in this case. Home is not only the place where people live, but also, where they come from and how they feel comfortable; home is both a physical space and an abstract concept. The purpose of the study was to examine what challenges Black African graduate students face when adjusting to life in the United States. A secondary concern was to examine what coping strategies were used during the transition. A qualitative approach was used to interview the participants and through coding, develop themes related to their time as graduate students.

This study concluded that there were a number of issues that Black African graduate students face. The students reported that they experienced homesickness, culture shock, and discrimination during their time at school. Specific themes also emerged as to how they coped with …

Having an accurate count of the city of Chelsea’s Latino population will require strategic organizing by government officials and community leaders. If there is an undercount of the population, especially of immigrants who live in Chelsea, there will be long-term and potentially devastating effects on the city’s political power and less federal funding to address the needs of its Latino majority. The Earth's population will become more than 80% urban during this century. This threshold is often regarded as sufficient justification for pursuing urban ecology. However, pursuit has primarily focused on building empirical richness, and urban ecology theory is rarely discussed. The Baltimore Ecosystem Study (BES) has been grounded in theory since its inception and its two decades of data collection have stimulated progress toward comprehensive urban theory. Emerging urban ecology theory integrates biology, physical sciences, social sciences, and urban design, probes interdisciplinary frontiers while being founded on textbook disciplinary theories, and accommodates surprising empirical results. การทำงานต่ำระดับของประชากรวัยแรงงานและประชากรสูงวัยในประเทศไทย, สุกัญญา มีสกุลทอง

การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษา 1) สถานการณ์การทำงานต่ำระดับ 2) ปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อการทำงานต่ำระดับ และ 3) การเข้าสู่การทำงานต่ำระดับและการปรับตัวของประชากรวัยแรงงานและประชากรสูงวัย โดยใช้การวิจัยแบบผสมผสานรูปแบบคู่ขนานเข้าหากัน การวิจัยเชิงปริมาณได้รับความอนุเคราะห์ข้อมูลโครงการสำรวจแรงงานนอกระบบ จากสำนักงานสถิติแห่งชาติ ได้กลุ่มตัวอย่าง 49,394 คน ส่วนการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพใช้การสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกจากกรณีตัวอย่าง 40 คน ครอบคลุม 5 ภูมิภาค ได้แก่ กรุงเทพมหานคร ภาคเหนือ ภาคกลาง ภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ และภาคใต้ การวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลใช้สถิติพรรณนาและสถิติอนุมานร่วมกับข้อค้นพบจากการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ผลการศึกษาพบว่า การทำงานต่ำระดับของประชากรวัยแรงงานและประชากรสูงวัยกระจายตัวอยู่ในทุกภูมิภาคทั่วประเทศไทยทั้งด้านเวลา ด้านการศึกษา และด้านรายได้ โดยมีผู้ทำงานต่ำระดับมากกว่า 1 ด้านในลักษณะซับซ้อนและซ้ำซ้อน และการวิเคราะห์ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างตัวแปรด้วยแบบจำลองโพรบิทพบว่า ในภาพรวมนั้น ปัจจัยซึ่งมีผลต่อการทำงานต่ำระดับทั้ง 3 ด้าน ได้แก่ สถานภาพสมรส สถานะการจ้างงาน ประเภทอาชีพ ประเภทอุตสาหกรรม ภูมิภาคที่อยู่อาศัย ในขณะที่ปัจจัยที่มีผลเฉพาะด้านการศึกษาและด้านรายได้ ได้แก่ รุ่น เพศ จำนวนปีที่ศึกษา ปัจจัยที่มีผลเฉพาะด้านเวลาและด้านการศึกษา ได้แก่ รายได้ และปัจจัยที่มีผลเฉพาะด้านรายได้ ได้แก่ เขตการปกครอง การเข้าสู่การทำงานต่ำระดับนั้นมีสาเหตุหลักและสาเหตุรองประกอบกันในลักษณะที่แตกต่างกันไป โดยอาจจัดการประกอบกันได้ 5 กลุ่ม ดังนี้ 1) การรักษาสมดุลระหว่างการทำงานกับการดูแลครอบครัวประกอบกับความไม่พึงพอใจในงานเดิม 2) การรักษาสมดุลระหว่างการทำงานกับการดูแลครอบครัวประกอบกับปัญหาสุขภาพ 3) การไม่สามารถหางานที่เหมาะสมได้ประกอบกับสาเหตุรองด้านความไม่พึงพอใจในงานเดิม ครอบครัวมีภาระหนี้สิน การออกจากระบบการศึกษากลางคัน สภาพภูมิอากาศที่ไม่เอื้อต่อการทำงาน ข้อจำกัดในการหางานเมื่อมีอายุมากขึ้น 4) ความพึงพอใจในงานประกอบกับสาเหตุรองด้านความไม่พึงพอใจในงานเดิม การมีปัญหาสุขภาพ ครอบครัวมีภาระหนี้สิน และ 5) ความพึงพอใจในงานประกอบกับปัญหาสุขภาพ ทั้งนี้ ภายหลังเข้าสู่การทำงานต่ำระดับพบการปรับตัวของทั้งประชากรวัยแรงงานและประชากรสูงวัยใน 2 ลักษณะ คือ 1) การไม่ปรับตัว และ 2) การปรับตัวด้านจิตใจ ด้านการทำงาน ด้านเศรษฐกิจ และด้านสังคม รวมถึงพบการปรับตัวของบุคคลใกล้ชิด ได้แก่ ครอบครัว เพื่อนร่วมงาน นายจ้าง อย่างไรก็ตาม เมื่อพ้นช่วงการปรับตัวนั้น ทั้งประชากรวัยแรงงานและประชากรสูงวัยยังมีความเสี่ยงต่อเนื่องทั้งด้านการทำงานและการดำรงชีวิต ดังนั้น …
