In contemporary China, demographers estimate that 30 million men are single because there are simply not enough women in the Chinese population, and the 2020 Chinese census shows that there are 34.9 million more men than women. These men are called guanggun, which can be directly translated to “bare sticks/branches,” a slur that indicates a lack of marriage and sex. In this project, I demonstrate that guanggun’s singlehood marks them as the marginalized at the intersection of heteronormativity, patriarchy, globalizing capitalism, and pronatalist governmentality. In a highly heteronormative and patrilineal culture, guanggun are branded as abnormal/incomplete. However, because …

Although there is extensive literature on youth and adolescent antisocial behavior, some correlates of youth antisociality are not known yet. As such, the present study is devoted to understanding the micro- and macro-level predictors of youth and adolescents’ antisociality in three contexts. Personal religious beliefs are often seen as having an important role in shaping disapproving attitudes. However, little attention has been given to the country religious context for understanding public opinion about abortion. The problem of social segregation gains new relevance as digital technology has now become the core of people’s lives and work. Unfortunately, this factor is often neglected in studies of social segregation. Previous studies have only taken note of social and spatial segregation. This study aims to fill a conceptual gap by raising the virtual dimension within socio-spatial segregation. This research finds that virtual segregation has strengthened segregationist tendencies that follow the growth of luxurious housing complexes and gated communities. A number of studies have shown various agrarian conflicts as a response by local farmers against the policy of national parks that prohibits them from accessing conservation forest areas. However, previous studies had not explained the dynamics of power relations between park authorities and farmers who stand in opposition to these policies. Age segregation adversely impacts health and wellbeing. Prior studies, although limited, report increasing age segregation of the US. However, these studies are dated, do not comprehensively examine the spatiotemporal patterns and the correlates of intergenerational segregation, or suffer from methodological limitations. To address these gaps, we assess the spatiotemporal patterns of age segregation between 1990 and 2010 using census-tract data to compute the dissimilarity index (D) at the national, state, and county levels. Results contradict previous findings providing robust evidence of decreasing age segregation for most parts of the country and across geographical levels. BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory failure is a life-threatening medical condition, associated with a variety of conditions and risk factors, including acute respiratory diseases which are a frequent cause of pediatric morbidity and mortality worldwide. In Colombia, the literature related to ARF is scarce.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence, causes, and sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of ARF in three hospitals in Bogota, a high-altitude city located in Colombia, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When Diaspora Politics Meet Global Ambitions: Diaspora Institutions Amid China's Geopolitical Transformations, Jiaqi M. Liu

Through a case study of China, one of the largest emigration states and a rising global power, this article probes how a homeland state envisions diaspora politics amid geopolitical transformations. Drawing on historical, policy, and interview data, I argue that China's changing positioning toward Chinese emigrants, triggered by the state's geopolitical vicissitudes, has reshaped and repurposed diaspora institutions. I find that since the 2010s, China's diaspora policies have shifted away from soliciting diasporic support for domestic economic growth and national unification and toward liaising externally with migrants to expand Chinese soft power abroad. การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาสถานการณ์ของเด็กอายุ 15-17 ปี ในประเทศไทยที่เข้าสู่การทำงาน รวมทั้ง รูปแบบการทำงานและชั่วโมงการทำงานที่ยาวนานของแรงงานวัยเยาว์ (เด็กอายุ 15-17 ปี ที่ทำงาน) นอกจากนี้ การวิจัยนี้ยังมุ่งศึกษาปัจจัยทางประชากรในครัวเรือนและลักษณะครัวเรือนที่ส่งผลต่อการเข้าสู่การทำงานของเด็ก ตลอดจน รูปแบบการทำงานและการทำงานในชั่วโมงการทำงานที่ยาวนานของแรงงานวัยเยาว์ ทั้งนี้ งานวิจัยนี้เป็นการวิจัยแบบผสมผสานที่ใช้ข้อมูลเชิงปริมาณจากการสำรวจภาวะการทำงานของประชากร ไตรมาส 3 พ.ศ. 2561 ที่จัดเก็บโดยสำนักงานสถิติแห่งชาติและการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกกับแรงงานวัยเยาว์ จำนวน 27 คน ผลการวิจัยที่สำคัญ พบว่า แรงงานวัยเยาว์ส่วนใหญ่ทำงานช่วยเหลือธุรกิจในครัวเรือนโดยไม่ได้รับค่าจ้าง รองลงมาคือการเป็นลูกจ้าง นอกจากนี้ ยังพบว่าแรงงานวัยเยาว์ที่ทำงานไปด้วยเรียนไปด้วยมีสัดส่วนของการทำงานในชั่วโมงที่ยาวนานมากกว่าแรงงานวัยเยาว์ที่ทำงานอย่างเดียว ส่วนปัจจัยสำคัญที่ส่งผลต่อการเข้าสู่การทำงานในรูปแบบการทำงานอย่างเดียว ได้แก่ ระดับการศึกษาของหัวหน้าครัวเรือนและสมาชิกคนอื่นในครัวเรือนที่อายุตั้งแต่ 18 ปีขึ้นไป สถานภาพสมรสของหัวหน้าครัวเรือน ความเกี่ยวพันทางญาติกับหัวหน้าครัวเรือน การขาดการเอาใจใส่ด้านการศึกษาของผู้ปกครอง สำหรับปัจจัยสำคัญที่ส่งผลต่อชั่วโมงการทำงานที่ยาวนาน ได้เก่ การหารายได้ที่เพียงพอเพื่อเลี้ยงครอบครัว การเป็นลูกจ้าง และการขาดทักษะชีวิตในการจัดการเวลา ดังนั้น ผู้วิจัยจึงมีข้อเสนอแนะหลัก 4 ประการ ได้แก่ 1. ควรพิจารณาปัจจัยเสี่ยงในครัวเรือนและจัดการรายกรณีสำหรับเด็กที่มีปัจจัยเสี่ยง โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งป้องกันการหลุดออกนอกระบบการศึกษาและช่วยให้แรงงานวัยเยาว์ที่ทำงานอย่างเดียวกลับมาเรียนต่อได้ โดยอาจเป็นการทำงานควบคู่กับการเรียน 2. ควรพัฒนาทักษะการทำงานของเด็กเพื่อให้แรงงานได้มีโอกาสการทำงานที่ได้รับค่าตอบแทนที่สูงขึ้นทำให้มีชั่วโมงการทำงานที่น้อยลง 3. ควรร่วมมือกับนายจ้างในการออกแนวทางการกำหนดชั่วโมงการทำงานสำหรับแรงงานวัยเยาว์ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง แรงงานวัยเยาว์ที่ทำงานไปด้วยเรียนไปด้วย รวมทั้งให้ครอบคลุมถึงกลุ่มเด็กที่เรียนในสายสามัญนอกเหนือจากสายอาชีพ 4. ควรพัฒนาทักษะชีวิติในการจัดการเวลาในการทำงานตั้งแต่วัยเยาว์เพื่อตอบสนองการทำงานในอนาคต

การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาลักษณะของการเปิดรับข้อมูลข่าวสารที่เป็นประโยชน์ผ่านสื่อแต่ละประเภท ปัจจัยที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับการเปิดรับข้อมูลข่าวสารที่เป็นประโยชน์ผ่านสื่อแต่ละประเภท และความสัมพันธ์ของการเปิดรับข้อมูลข่าวสารที่เป็นประโยชน์ผ่านสื่อแต่ละประเภทกับคุณภาพชีวิตประชากรไทยอายุ 50 ปีขึ้นไป โดยใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงปริมาณและเชิงคุณภาพ ในการวิจัยเชิงปริมาณใช้ข้อมูลจากการสำรวจประชากรสูงอายุในประเทศไทย พ.ศ. 2560 และ 2564 กลุ่มตัวอย่างในการศึกษาคือ ผู้ที่มีอายุ 50 ปีขึ้นไป ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ประชากรอายุ 50-59 ปี ร้อยละ 91.23 และอายุ 60 ปีขึ้นไป ร้อยละ92.87 เปิดรับข้อมูลข่าวสารที่เป็นประโยชน์ต่อตนเองผ่านสื่ออย่างน้อย 1 ประเภท โดยจะเปิดรับสื่อแต่ละประเภทในสัดส่วนที่ไม่เท่ากัน และมีปัจจัยที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับการเปิดรับข้อมูลข่าวสารที่เป็นประโยชน์ผ่านสื่อแต่ละประเภทแตกต่างกัน อย่างไรก็ตาม สื่อออนไลน์เป็นสื่อที่ประชากรทั้ง 2 กลุ่ม เปิดรับเพิ่มขึ้นมากที่สุดเมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับสื่อประเภทอื่น ทั้งนี้อาจเนื่องจากในระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2560 และ 2564 มีสถานการณ์การเกิดโรคระบาดโควิด-19 ทำให้การเว้นระยะห่างทางสังคมเป็นมาตรการที่จำเป็นในการป้องกันตนเอง นำไปสู่การเพิ่มบทบาทการใช้สื่อออนไลน์ในชีวิตประจำวันของประชากรในทุกกลุ่มวัย นอกจากนี้ผลการศึกษายังพบว่าการเปิดรับสื่อประเภทต่างๆมีความสัมพันธ์กับคุณภาพชีวิตของประชากรไทยอายุ 50 ปีขึ้นไปในด้านสุขภาพกาย สุขภาพใจ การมีส่วนร่วม และ การมีหลักประกันและความมั่นคงอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ โดยกลุ่มประชากรอายุ 50-59 ปี การเปิดรับเฉพาะโทรทัศน์ มีความสัมพันธ์กับคุณภาพชีวิตด้านการมีหลักประกันและความมั่นคง ขณะที่การเปิดรับเฉพาะสื่อบุคคล มีความสัมพันธ์กับคุณภาพชีวิตด้านสุขภาพใจและการมีส่วนร่วม และการเปิดรับเฉพาะสื่อออนไลน์ จะมีความสัมพันธ์กับคุณภาพชีวิตในด้านสุขภาพกาย สุขภาพใจ และการมีส่วนร่วม เมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับกลุ่มที่ไม่เปิดรับสื่อประเภทใดเลย ในขณะที่กลุ่มประชากรอายุ 60 ปีขึ้นไป พบว่า การเปิดรับเฉพาะโทรทัศน์ มีความสัมพันธ์กับคุณภาพชีวิตด้านการมีสุขภาพกาย การมีส่วนร่วม และการหลักประกันและความมั่นคง ขณะที่การเปิดรับเฉพาะสื่อบุคคล มีความสัมพันธ์กับคุณภาพชีวิตด้านการมีส่วนร่วม และการเปิดรับเฉพาะสื่อออนไลน์ มีความสัมพันธ์กับคุณภาพชีวิตด้านสุขภาพกาย เมื่อเทียบกับกลุ่มที่ไม่เปิดรับสื่อประเภทใดเลย ทั้งนี้การเปิดรับสื่อที่มีความหลากหลายจะทำให้คุณภาพชีวิตของประชากรอายุ 50 ปีขึ้นไปดีขึ้น ทั้งในมิติด้านสุขภาพกาย สุขภาพใจ การมีส่วนร่วม และการมีหลักประกันและความมั่นคง โดยปัจจัยด้านประเภทสื่อที่เปิดรับและความหลากหลายของสื่อมีความสัมพันธ์กับคุณภาพชีวิตของประชากรไทยอายุ 50 ปีขึ้นไปอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติ

การศึกษาครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาความยากจนของผู้สูงอายุไทยและปัจจัยที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับความยากจนของผู้สูงอายุไทยในปี พ.ศ.2560 และปี พ.ศ.2564 โดยใช้ข้อมูลจากการสำรวจประชากรสูงอายุในประเทศไทยปี พ.ศ.2560 และปี พ.ศ.2564 และศึกษาความยากจนของครัวเรือนผู้สูงอายุไทยและปัจจัยที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับความยากจนของครัวเรือนผู้สูงอายุไทยในปี พ.ศ.2560 และปี พ.ศ.2564 โดยใช้ข้อมูลจากการสำรวจภาวะเศรษฐกิจและสังคมของครัวเรือนปี พ.ศ.2560 และปี พ.ศ.2564 ของสำนักงานสถิติแห่งชาติ ผลการศึกษาเปรียบเทียบความยากจนของผู้สูงอายุไทยระหว่างปี พ.ศ.2560 และปี พ.ศ.2564 พบว่าสัดส่วนผู้สูงอายุไทยที่ยากจนลดลงจากร้อยละ 39.0 ในปี พ.ศ.2560 เป็นร้อยละ 34.1 ในปี พ.ศ.2564 โดยปัจจัยที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับความยากจนของผู้สูงอายุไทยอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติทั้งในปี พ.ศ.2560 และปี พ.ศ.2564 ประกอบด้วย อายุ จำนวนสมาชิกในครัวเรือน ระดับการศึกษา สถานภาพสมรส เขตที่อยู่อาศัย สถานภาพการทำงาน สวัสดิการค่ารักษาพยาบาล และรูปแบบการอยู่อาศัย และพบว่าแต่ละปัจจัยมีความสัมพันธ์กับความยากจนของผู้สูงอายุไทยในทิศทางเดียวกันทั้งในปี พ.ศ.2560 และปี พ.ศ.2564 ในขณะที่ปัจจัยด้านเพศและการพึ่งพิงรวมมีความสัมพันธ์กับความยากจนของผู้สูงอายุไทยอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติเฉพาะในปี พ.ศ.2560 เท่านั้น และผลการศึกษาเปรียบเทียบความยากจนของครัวเรือนผู้สูงอายุไทยระหว่างปี พ.ศ.2560 และปี พ.ศ.2564 พบว่าสัดส่วนครัวเรือนผู้สูงอายุไทยที่ยากจนลดลงจากร้อยละ 11.5 ในปี พ.ศ.2560 เป็นร้อยละ 8.5 ในปี พ.ศ.2564 โดยปัจจัยที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับความยากจนของครัวเรือนผู้สูงอายุไทยอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติทั้งในปี พ.ศ.2560 และปี พ.ศ.2564 ประกอบด้วย อายุหัวหน้าครัวเรือน จำนวนสมาชิกครัวเรือน การพึ่งพิงรวม ระดับการศึกษา และเขตที่อยู่อาศัย และพบว่าแต่ละปัจจัยมีความสัมพันธ์กับความยากจนของครัวเรือนผู้สูงอายุไทยในทิศทางเดียวกันทั้งในปี พ.ศ.2560 และปี พ.ศ.2564 ยกเว้นอายุของหัวหน้าครัวเรือนที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับความยากจนของครัวเรือนผู้สูงอายุไทยในทิศทางตรงข้ามกันระหว่างปี พ.ศ.2560 และปี พ.ศ.2564 ในขณะที่ปัจจัยด้านสถานภาพสมรสของหัวหน้าครัวเรือนมีความสัมพันธ์กับความยากจนของครัวเรือนผู้สูงอายุไทยอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติเฉพาะในปี พ.ศ.2560 เท่านั้น

This article, based on the 2021 Southern Rural Sociological Association (SRSA) Presidential Address, assesses the dimensions, causes of, and solutions to poverty. It finds that the definition of poverty varies based on the criteria used, and even by which agency or institution is defining it. It also finds that poverty indices vary by state and by county. For instance, in selected SRSA states, Virginia has the lowest poverty rate and Mississippi has the highest poverty rate.
