Criminal sentencing in the United States has shifted over the years. This paper outlines the current role morality plays in the sentencing and punishment of criminals. Recent work in moral psychology points the way to a better approach. Jonathan Haidt’s moral matrices, from his book The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion, provide a signpost for more efficacious treatment of those on parole or under community supervision, overall contributing to the reduction of recidivism. In sum, Haidt’s work in moral psychology could lead to fairer sentencing and more effective treatment.

การศึกษาเรื่อง แนวทางการสร้างภูมิคุ้มกันในเด็กและเยาวนต่อการป้องกันจากการตกเป็นเหยื่ออาชญากรรมและเป็นผู้กระทำผิดในสังคม: กรณีศึกษาโครงการโรงเรียนยุติธรรมอุปถัมภ์ เพื่อศึกษาถึงปัญหา อุปสรรค และข้อจำกัดในการสร้างภูมิคุ้มกันในเด็กและเยาวชน ผ่านโครงการโรงเรียนยุติธรรมอุปถัมภ์ เพื่อนำไปสู่ตัวอย่างรูปแบบและนโยบายที่เหมาะสมต่อการสร้างภูมิคุ้มกันของเด็กและเยาวชนต่อโอกาสในการตกเป็นเหยื่อและเป็นผู้กระทำผิดในสังคมที่เหมาะสมกับประเทศไทยและแต่ละบริบทสังคมต่อไป การศึกษาในครั้งนี้เป็นการศึกษาวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ด้วยวิธีการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกกลุ่มตัวอย่าง จำนวน 25 คน และการจัดสนทนากลุ่มย่อย ผู้เข้าร่วมสนทนากลุ่ม จำนวน 5 คน ผลการศึกษาพบว่า การกำหนดแนวทางการสร้างภูมิคุ้มกันในเด็กและเยาวชนนั้น ต้องมีการสำรวจสภาพปัญหาของเด็กและเยาวชนก่อน ทั้ง 5 ปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง 1) ปัจจัยส่วนบุคคล 2) ปัจจัยทางด้านครอบครัว 3) ปัจจัยทางด้านกลุ่มเพื่อน /สถาบันการศึกษา 4) ปัจจัยทางด้านสังคม และ 5) ปัจจัยอื่น ๆ เพื่อกำหนดรูปแบบและวิธีการที่เหมาะสมในการสร้างภูมิคุ้มกันที่ดีให้แก่เด็กและเยาวชนให้มีวัคซีนทางสังคมต่อการป้องกันตนเองจากการตกเป็นเหยื่อ และการกระทำความผิดในสังคม โดยปัญหาและอุปสรรคจากกรณีศึกษาการดำเนินโครงการโรงเรียนยุติธรรมอุปถัมภ์ ในปี พ.ศ. 2562 สามารถแบ่งปัญหาออกเป็น 6 ด้าน ได้แก่ 1) ด้านนโยบาย และการนำนโยบายไปสู่การปฏิบัติ 2) ด้านวิธีการแก้ไข/เนื้อหา หรือกิจกรรม 3) ด้านเจ้าหน้าที่ผู้แก้ไข 4) ด้านเด็กและเยาวชนผู้รับการแก้ไข 5) ด้านระยะเวลา และ 6) ปัญหาด้านอื่น ๆ ทั้งงบประมาณ การติดตามประเมินผล และสถานการณ์ Covid-19 ดังนั้น การนำเสนอนโยบาย และรูปแบบที่เหมาะสม โดยผู้ศึกษาวิเคราะห์และนำเสนอผ่านกระบวนการตามหลักของทฤษฎีระบบ (System Theory) การวิเคราะห์ปัจจัยนำเข้า (Input) คือ การวิเคราะห์และสำรวจสภาพปัญหา จากปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องกับเด็กและเยาวชนโดยใช้เครื่องมือในการประเมินเพื่อนำมาวิเคราะห์และกำหนดกระบวนการ (Process) คือ แนวทาง/วิธีการ/โปรแกรม ที่จะนำไปสู่กระบวนการในการเปลี่ยนแปลง และนำแนวทางการสร้างภูมิคุ้มกันในเด็กและเยาวชนต่อการป้องกันจากการตกเป็นเหยื่ออาชญากรรมและเป็นผู้กระทำผิดในสังคม ตามบริบทของสังคมไทยไปปฏิบัติที่เหมาะสม แบ่งเป็นหลักสูตรแกนกลาง และหลักสูตรเฉพาะด้าน ในแต่ละโรงเรียน จึงนำไปสู่ผลลัพธ์ (Output) คือ เด็กและเยาวชนมีภูมิคุ้มกันที่ดีในตนเอง ไม่หันไปกระทำผิดในสังคมหรือตกเป็นเหยื่ออาชญากรรมในสังคม โดยกระบวนการต่าง ๆ นั้น ดำเนินการผ่านการบูรณาการร่วมกันของหน่วยงานต่าง ๆ ซึ่งเป็นแนวทางสำคัญที่จะทำให้อัตราการกระทำผิดของเด็กและเยาวชนลดลง และเป็นการพัฒนาเด็กและเยาวชนอย่างแท้จริง จึงนำไปสู่แนวทางการสร้างภูมิคุ้มกันในเด็กและเยาวชนต่อการป้องกันจากการตกเป็นเหยื่ออาชญากรรมและเป็นผู้กระทำผิดในสังคมที่เหมาะสมกับประเทศไทยได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ

As literature and media findings suggest, right-wing extremism has been a growing threat to the security of Canada. This qualitative research study seeks to develop a better understanding of the way Canadian right-wing white nationalists develop online in order to aid future radicalization research. After the tragic attacks on September 11^th, 2001, radicalization research has largely been focused on Islamist extremism. While there is much research attention on media discourse on individual adult asylum seekers and refugee claimants, there is little research attention on how media portrays detained children and youth affected by immigration detention. This thesis examines to what extent traditional gender norms are adhered to by the depiction of stalkers within films. Stalking has only recently been recognized as a social problem. Due to the relatively new attention, there has been a lack of research surrounding the way in which stalkers and stalking behaviours are being portrayed within popular media, particularly film media. This paper uses a qualitative ethnographic content analysis approach to examine these stalking depictions. Twenty films that had a high level of stalking portrayed behaviours, and thriller genres rather than horror genres, were collected and analyzed. It was found that …

The perception of serial killers primarily being sexual sadists may be greatly affected by an overfocus of research on sexually violent serial killers and a lack of attention on their non-sexually motivated counterparts such as healthcare serial killers (HCSK) (Lubaszka et al., 2014). Status degradation ceremonies are a process through which a denouncer(s) and members of a community shift an individual’s status within their social group to a lower position (Garfinkel, 1956). Current status degradation ceremony literature primarily focuses on ceremonies that are carried out by formal officials as well as the impacts of these ceremonies on the denounced individuals. This research provides insights into ceremonies led by “pseudo-officials,” individuals or groups who hold no formally recognised position but claim to act in the public interest in the same manner as formally appointed officials are expected to. This qualitative, multi-manuscript dissertation examines the experiences of Black women who live in the Greater Toronto Area and other southwestern Ontario regions who have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV), some of whom were also charged with an IPV-related offence. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 25 Black women to better understand the meanings they attach to their experiences. Critical race feminism (CRF) was employed to help conceptualize women’s narratives. This study examines undergraduate students from the University of New Hampshire attitudes towards campus police, specifically how student experience with campus police affects their attitudes toward them. There were a total of 113 respondents from the University of New Hampshire that answered an online survey. The survey looked specifically at the relationship between students' experience and attitudes towards UNH police, hypothesizing that students who had perceived fair encounters with campus police would be more likely to contact them in an emergency and have more positive attitudes toward them . This article reviews the literature of how individual differences (specifically trait conscientiousness) may contribute to ex-offender responsivity to reentry programming. By studying if individual differences (e.g. personality traits) contribute to specific responsivity, programming can be determined to be ineffective for the general population and redesigned in a manner that is beneficial for the largest number of clients. To that end, this literature review provides a conceptual foundation for potential future studies, based on what previous researchers have found in their own studies. Bruce Bryant, 50, was convicted of the murder of 11-year-old Travis Lilley in June 1996. Bryant maintains he never fired a weapon that day in 1993. But he recognizes that his lifestyle as a young person — he started dealing drugs when he was 14 — contributed to an environment in which a stray bullet could take a young life. And for that reason, he’s spent most of his 25 years in prison working to help young people.

The Criminogenic Effect Of Marijuana Dispensaries In Denver, Colorado: A Microsynthetic Control Quasi-Experiment And Cost-Benefit Analysis, Nathan Connealy, Eric L. Piza, Dave Hatten

The study analyzed the criminogenic effect of legalizing recreational marijuana dispensaries in Denver. Street segments with recreational dispensaries experienced no changes in violent, disorder and drug crime but did experience an 18% increase in property crime, and street segments adjacent to recreational dispensaries experienced some notable (but non-significant) drug and disorder crime increases. Medical dispensaries demonstrated no significant crime changes. A cost-benefit analysis found the associated crime costs were largely offset by sales revenue. Monetary benefits were much less pronounced, and barely cost effective, when only considering tax revenue.

Research relating to police stress has typically focused on officers working in urban areas, neglecting their rural counterparts. This is especially true of conservation officers, who are tasked with enforcing laws in state parks and other recreational areas. To date, only a handful of studies have sought to better understand their experiences and perceptions. Sexual violence is a pervasive issue identified on post-secondary campuses. Existing research focuses almost exclusively on an American context and quantitatively explores the frequency with which sexual assault occurs on campuses. As men are overrepresented as perpetrators, it is necessary to investigate their perspectives on the issue. The present study qualitatively examines the perspectives of white, heterosexual, male students to facilitate dialogue about sexual violence on university campuses in Ontario. Several themes emerged, specifically pertaining to negotiations of consent, a perceived “grey area,” peer influence, and how the social construction of masculinity fosters specific beliefs that excuse sexually violent beliefs, …
