Looking For Better: A History Of Black Southern Migrations, Selena Sanderfer Doss

A broad overview of migrations affecting black southerners is presented, including the Atlantic slave trade, the domestic slave trade, colonization movements to Sierra Leone and Liberia, the Exoduster movement, the Great Migration, and the Return South migration. Emigrants convey their experiences and motivations through testimonies and personal accounts. Surviving the trauma of forced migrations, black southerners organized numerous migration movements both outside and within American polities in search of better opportunities. In the late 20th century, black southerners also initiated a return migration to the American South and have since achieved notable socioeconomic and political progress.

The successful reintegration of ex-offenders into the community is a primary factor in reducing recidivism and protecting the public. However, successful reintegration is often hard to come by. Prior research has examined the ways in which the stigmatic labelling of ex-offenders disrupts their successful re-entry into the community. Further, studies have shown that the stigmatic labelling of ex-offenders by the community plays a prominent role in offender recidivism. The present study examines this prior research and explores how gender, age, race/ethnicity, and class determine the extent of stigmatization that offenders experience. Internet-based victimization of senior citizens is an important potential threat of growing social, economic, and public policy interest. Given this, we sought to examine whether the existing research base could be used to formulate sound public policy in this area. To do so, we conducted a rapid evidence synthesis and assessment of the research literature from 2010-2020 surrounding three central organizing themes: cyber-related harms, responses and strategies, and prevention programs and solutions. The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) (1994) was a hallmark legislation aimed at combating violence against women. While violence against women is a national issue that affects women of all race/ethnicities, it affects Native American women the most, as Native women experience the highest rates of violence. Violence against Native women is rooted in colonization because it decreases the power of tribal government, diminishes tribal sovereignty, and devalues Native Americans, which in turn leaves Native women more vulnerable to victimization. As such, amendments to VAWA must take particular action on violence against Native women, including actions that support decolonization. The …

This thesis details a case study regarding reentry resources available to returning citizens and their influence on recidivism (returning to prison) likelihood among people released from prison. It explores existing research on recidivism, describes the interviews conducted by the researcher, discusses the implications of this research, and suggests further avenues for research and exploration to better inform policies and future actions regarding reentry resources. Ultimately, this thesis concludes that the most useful resources for returning citizens include resources directed towards meeting basic needs like food, clothing, and transportation, housing resources, support/mentorship groups, family support, and employment organizations. Studies show that many foreign women exploited through commercial sex rely on visa brokers to enter the U.S. However, scholars have not investigated various visa brokers and the techniques they use to bring foreign women into U.S. prostitution as a whole. The Children’s Court Drug Court (CCDC) has operated for 20 years in Perth as an alternative Court for drug-using young offenders who present at the Children’s Court. Despite the CCDC’s relative longevity, researchers have examined neither the inner workings of the Court nor the experiences of its actors. The current study aimed, not to evaluate the CCDC, but to identify measures needed to refine CCDC processes to enhance the experiences and outcomes of young people who participate in the CCDC. What is the likely effect of the recession brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic on indigent defense budgets in the United States? To look forward, we look backward. We examine data on county-level spending on indigent defense in Texas during the Great Recession of 2007–2009. Redistributive policies—those which use taxpayer funds to support individuals who themselves pay little or no tax—are particularly susceptible to cuts during times of fiscal stress. Yet our analysis shows indigent defense policy, measured in terms of spending and access to counsel rates, was generally stable through the Great Recession years, even in counties hit hardest. …

This study examined the social impacts of incarcerating women, specifically mothers, as well as the far-reaching collateral consequences that the mass incarceration of women in the United States has on formerly incarcerated women’s successful reintegration back into society and analyzed how the harsh policies that exist detrimentally impact family members and society as a whole. This study revealed several themes that show the far reaching damage incarceration itself has on women and their families and provides a more comprehensive analysis of the incalculable costs of mass incarceration. การวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษากระบวนการทำงานของศูนย์แคร์ กรมราชทัณฑ์ วิเคราะห์สภาพปัญหาและอุปสรรคที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการดำเนินการ และแนวทางการพัฒนาการดำเนินการของศูนย์แคร์ กรมราชทัณฑ์ การศึกษาใช้วิธีการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพผ่านการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกผู้มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องกับศูนย์แคร์ ซึ่งประกอบด้วย ผู้อำนวยการกองพฤตินิสัย ผู้ปฏิบัติงานศูนย์แคร์ในเรือนจำ 4 แห่ง คือ ทัณฑสถานหญิงพิษณุโลก เรือนจำกลางคลองเปรม เรือนจำกลางนครสวรรค์ และเรือนจำพิเศษกรุงเทพมหานคร จำนวน 16 คน หน่วยงานเครือข่ายที่ปฏิบัติงานร่วมกับศูนย์แคร์ จำนวน 7 คน และผู้พ้นโทษที่ได้รับความช่วยเหลือจากศูนย์แคร์ จำนวน 5 คน ผลการศึกษาพบว่า 1) กระบวนการทำงานของศูนย์แคร์ กรมราชทัณฑ์ แบ่งออกเป็น 3 ขั้นตอน คือ กระบวนการก่อนปล่อยตัว กระบวนการในวันปล่อยตัว และกระบวนการภายหลังปล่อยตัว 2) ปัญหาและอุปสรรคสำคัญที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการดำเนินการของศูนย์แคร์ ได้แก่ ปัญหาด้านบุคลากร ปัญหาด้านการให้ข้อมูลของผู้ต้องขัง ปัญหาด้านสังคม และปัญหาด้านข้อกฎหมาย และ 3) แนวทางการพัฒนาการดำเนินการของศูนย์แคร์ คือ การเพิ่มบุคลากรในตำแหน่งนักสังคมสงเคราะห์ในเรือนจำ/ทัณฑสถานที่ยังขาดแคลน การให้ผู้พ้นโทษที่ได้รับความช่วยเหลือจากศูนย์แคร์เข้ามาบรรยายถึงประโยชน์ที่จะได้รับในการให้ข้อมูลที่ถูกต้อง การจัดทำสื่อหรือกิจกรรมเพื่อเผยแพร่ตัวอย่างของผู้พ้นโทษที่สามารถกลับตัวได้ เพื่อให้สังคมเปลี่ยนทัศนคติ และการแก้ข้อกฎหมายเพื่อให้ผู้พ้นโทษได้มีโอกาสประกอบกิจการของตัวเองหรือได้รับการจ้างงานมากขึ้น

A substantial body of literature connects media effects to consumer perceptions of the criminal justice system. Research on the topic of cultivation theory has highlighted that an increased fear of crime within the general populace, due to an exaggeration of violence and criminal activity in the mass media, has spurred increased support for punitive policing, harsher sentencing, and positive feelings toward capital punishment. Recent advances in spatial analysis have opened new opportunities for understanding the spatial relationship between social structure and police violence. Mental health problems, including substance use problems, are more prevalent among adolescent criminal offenders than among the general population and are associated with an elevated risk of re-offending. It is important to understand what factors are associated with serious adolescent offenders’ future mental health and re-offending outcomes to promote their positive development. This study examined potential mechanisms behind established relationships between risk factors for mental health and criminal offending and psychosocial outcomes while integrating ecological theory and a risk and protective framework. Recent years have witnessed a steadily increasing scholarly interest in perceptions of corruption, particularly in terms of level and prevalence. However, previous studies have largely overlooked perceived seriousness as another unique dimension of corruption perception. Furthermore, previous studies seeking causes of corruption perception have failed to consider cultural factors at either the individual or aggregate level as potential predictors. Despite decades of reforms and technological innovations, increasing evidence shows that state securitization disproportionately harms already racially, spatially, and socio-economically marginalized communities. My research investigates uneven impacts of state securitization, from punitive welfare programs to school surveillance to policing. Across sites, I focus on scales, voices and the everyday lived experiences often left out of scholarly discourse and sensational media. This research report is the result of collecting and evaluating data on cases of homicides and attempted homicides in the German sex trade from 1920-2017. The findings show violence against prostituted women and the attitudes of the sex buyers who commit most of the violent acts against the women. The report discusses the media coverage of murder cases, complication of cases, and a critique of methods of criminal evaluation by the police. From 1920 to 2017, 272 victims of murder and attempted murder were identified. Liberalization of prostitution occurred in 2002. From then until 2017, there is a decrease in …

How do people view governmental pandemic surveillance? And how can their views inform courts considering the constitutionality of digital monitoring programs aimed at containing the spread of a highly contagious diseases? We measure the perceived intrusiveness of pandemic surveillance through two nationally representative surveys of Americans. Our results show that even at the height of a pandemic people find surveillance for public health to be more intrusive than surveillance for traditional law enforcement purposes. To account for these strong privacy concerns, we propose safeguards that we believe would make cell phone location tracking and other similar digital monitoring regimes constitutionally …

This thesis investigates the unique interactions between pregnancy, substance involvement, and race as they relate to the War on Drugs and the hyper-incarceration of women. Using ordinary least square regression analyses and data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics’ 2016 Survey of Prison Inmates, I examine if (and how) pregnancy status, drug use, race, and their interactions influence two length of incarceration outcomes: sentence length and amount of time spent in jail between arrest and imprisonment. The results collectively indicate that pregnancy decreases length of incarceration outcomes for those offenders who are not substance-involved but not evenhandedly -- benefitting white …
