The St. Mary’s Women @ Work program partners with the Department of IT at UMass Boston to provide young women with a path to self sufficiency. It does so by placing these youth for a 3 month period, in a real-work environment where they get paid and receive hands-on practical training.

The Elder Economic Security Standard Index measures the income that Massachusetts’ seniors need to maintain independence and meet basic living expenses. The sizable gap between Social Security benefits and living expenses occurs throughout Massachusetts, but is more substantial for singles than for couples. Those who are older, single, female or a member of a racial or ethnic minority group are exposed to especially high risk of falling short of Index values. Empirical research in political participation has consistently shown that participation is characteristic of those with higher socio-economic status and formal education (Brady, Verba, & Schlozman, 1995; Lijphart, 1997; Dalton, 1988; Han, 2009; Marien, Hooghe, & Quintelier, 2010). Socio-economic status differences among citizens are accentuated in societies with high economic inequality as the Latin American ones (De Ferranti et al., 2003; Deininger & Squire, 1996; Dion, 2007; Hoffman & Centeno, 2003; Korzeniewicz & Smith, 2000), and therefore it would be expected to find political inequality in terms of participation in this region (Côrtes & Dubrow, 2011). This study evaluates Jordanian youth’s awareness and perceptions of the constitutional amendments of 2011 and explores the youth’s main sources of political news. I hypothesized that a majority of young Jordanians are largely uninformed about the amendments and expected that the main source of news for most young Jordanians were official media sources. My research data consists of survey responses, given by 65 students from the University of Jordan, as well as five interviews with young Jordanians. My findings proved that the Jordanian youth has a low level of awareness about the recent political reforms, and the main news sources …

The purpose of this study was to show the unique multilingual situation in Dakar, which manifests itself most frequently with a mixture of Wolof and French use. By using the neighborhood of Ouakam as an indicator of Dakar as a whole, one can see the immense impact of both Wolof and French in family settings. More importantly, the interaction of Wolof and French in Ouakam households is used as a lens to show the social impact language has on families in Dakar.

Community Organizing At Cdc’S: Implications For Practice, Candice Mclaughlin

Community Engagement Student Work

This study explores the ways community organizing takes place at community development corporations (CDC’s). CDC’s are non-profit, community-based organizations that serve low or moderate income communities through physical, economic and cultural development as well as the provision of social services. This study examines the successes and challenges experienced by CDC’s that practice community organizing. The researcher conducts a thorough literature review and a survey with a sample of CDC’s in Massachusetts to explore these topics. This research will inform those in the field and ensure CDC’s future organizational effectiveness as well as the best possible outcomes for local communities.
