Contributions Of Role-Playing Games: Advantages Of Incorporating Social Media In Disaster Response, Erin Mullin 2019 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Contributions Of Role-Playing Games: Advantages Of Incorporating Social Media In Disaster Response, Erin Mullin

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

After a disaster, emergency managers need to know who needs help, what type of help they need, and how soon they need it. Traditionally, they have relied on 911 calls and ground assessments to collect this information. Because the needs of a population are not able to be identified in a timely manner by ground assessments and because individuals are often unable to get through to 911, many civilians in distress turn to social media outlets as a last-ditch effort to obtain the services they need. Due to the uncertainty concerning the accuracy of social media posts, responding to disaster …

Design Of A Feedback-Controlled Wireless Converter For Electric Vehicle Wireless Charging Applications, Mohamed O. Badawy

Mineta Transportation Institute

Electric vehicles (EVs) have played an important role in the modern transporta-tion system in recent years. However, current generations of EVs face unsolved drawbacks such as short driving range, long charging time, and high cost due to expensive battery systems. Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) is a promising technology that is able to mitigate the drawbacks EVs are facing. This paper focuses on investigating and building a complete high-efficiency WPT system that is capable of efficiently charging electric vehicles. The goal is to design and ap-ply two different configurations of compensation networks to the WPT system. In this paper, the two …

Webinar: Evaluating Urban Arterial Reliability Performance Metrics, Jason Anderson

TREC Webinar Series

With worsening congestion, travel time reliability is increasingly becoming as critical as average travel times in affecting travel choices. Researchers from Portland State University (PSU) partnered with Washington County, Oregon to offer data-driven strategies in prioritizing funding for travel time reliability improvements on their urban arterials. The vast majority of existing research on travel time reliability has focused exclusively on freeways. Avinash Unnikrishnan, Sirisha Kothuri and Jason C. Anderson leveraged Bluetooth sensors provided and deployed by Bluemac Analytics to identify problem areas in the county. Set up at intersections throughout Washington County, the sensors are able to calculate travel time …

Efforts To Improve Roadway Safety: A Collaborative Approach Between Amish Communities And A Professional Engineering Society, S. Dee Jepsen, Andrew "Dewey" Mann

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Lighting and marking recommendations for animal-drawn buggies and wagons were first established in 2001 through an American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) Engineering Practice, EP576.1. Many Anabaptist communities who primarily rely on animal-drawn vehicles utilize this practice for marking their buggies and wagons; however they do not utilize the practice for their low-profile vehicles, such as pony carts. Visibility for pony carts on public roads is important to protect the operators, typically women and children. Following a series of tragic deaths in their community, the Holmes and Wayne Counties, Ohio, Amish safety committee raised the concern of having …
