Gnawing At The Roots: Toward A Transpersonal Poetics Of Guilt And Death, Jason Butler 2016 John F. Kennedy University, Pleasant Hill, CA

Gnawing At The Roots: Toward A Transpersonal Poetics Of Guilt And Death, Jason Butler

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

As an imaginal approach, archetypal psychology focuses its attention on the diverse and polysemous expressions of imagination as the ground from which all psychological expressions emerge, replacing the dried up concept of a singular ego with the notion that consciousness takes up a multitude of styles concordant with the mercurial flow of images that concentrically influence, grip down, and take over consciousness like a band of pirates commandeering a ship. Archetypal psychology situates itself as a transpersonal psychology by qualifying the image as inextricably archetypal, denoting a valence of meaning that extends beyond the merely personal, beyond the particular cultural-historical …

Meaningful Mutations: Reflections On The Synchronicity Of Evolution, Ritske Rensma 2016 University College Roosevelt, Utrecht, Netherlands

Meaningful Mutations: Reflections On The Synchronicity Of Evolution, Ritske Rensma

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Although Jung made a connection between his concept of the archetype and mankind’s evolutionary history throughout his career, he remained notoriously tight-lipped about his own specific views on evolutionary theory. In the final years of his life, however, he finally went more into detail about this important topic, putting forward a most thought-provoking idea: the notion that synchronicity, or meaningful coincidences, had a role to play in the way evolution took shape. As I will argue in this paper, Jung’s comments on this topic present clear evidence that he did not think primarily along Darwinian lines, as has recently …

Images, Figures And Qualities: Clarifying The Relationship Between Individual And Archetype, Jacob Kaminker 2016 John F. Kennedy University, Pleasant Hill, CA

Images, Figures And Qualities: Clarifying The Relationship Between Individual And Archetype, Jacob Kaminker

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

C. G. Jung (1937/1958) described archetypes as collective patterns of consciousness that are catalyzed into the individual human experience. This paper will examine the role of culture and history in the relationship between the timeless and imageless archetypal qualities such as self sacrifice, presence, love; the culturally agreed upon archetypal figures, which may include mythological characters and deities that have some shared cultural meaning; and individual instances of archetypal images, which might show up in a dream, or in a particular religious icon. The examples in this paper will demonstrate how, out of a collective cultural need for representation, a …

The Impact Of Doctoral Study On The Relationship Satisfaction And Commitment Level Of Doctoral Students And Doctoral Students Partners, Justin Cory Muller 2016 University of South Carolina

The Impact Of Doctoral Study On The Relationship Satisfaction And Commitment Level Of Doctoral Students And Doctoral Students Partners, Justin Cory Muller

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of doctoral study on the relationship satisfaction and commitment level of both doctoral students and partners of doctoral students. The researcher examined length of relationship, gender, financial status, and relationship status to determine if each variable is a predictor of relationship satisfaction and commitment level for both doctoral students and partners of doctoral students.

The majority of literature regarding the impact of doctoral study on relationship satisfaction has focused exclusively on the perspective of married doctoral students. From a systems perspective, it is impossible to understand a system by solely …

Be Your Own Guru: Authoritarianism And The Problem Of The Guru In Conscious Evolution, McAuley, Charles E. 2016 California Institute of Integral Studies

Be Your Own Guru: Authoritarianism And The Problem Of The Guru In Conscious Evolution, Mcauley, Charles E.

Journal of Conscious Evolution

This paper is an exploration of the problematic nature of the guru/disciple relationship, specifically, in Western Society. It begins with a discussion of the nature of spirituality and the spiritual quest. To contextualize the process, I also discuss my own spiritual path based in Roman Catholicism, Taoism, Buddhism and my thoughts on the philosophy of Krishnamurti. I explore the topic of the authoritarian follower in some depth. Its connection is symbiotic to the existence of the authoritarian leader. This connection is demonstrated within this paper as well. Additionally, I look at the flaws in some well-known guru figures and how …

Wearing Memories: Clothing And The Global Lives Of Mourning In Swaziland, Casey Golomski 2015 University of New Hampshire, Durham

Wearing Memories: Clothing And The Global Lives Of Mourning In Swaziland, Casey Golomski

Anthropology Scholarship

This article situates a cultural phenomenon of women’s memory work through clothing in Swaziland. It explores clothing as both action and object of everyday, personalized practice that constitutes psychosocial well-being and material proximities between the living and the dead, namely, in how clothing of the deceased is privately possessed and ritually manipulated by the bereaved. While human and spiritual self-other relations are produced through clothing and its material efficacy, current global ideologies of immaterial mortuary ritual associated with Pentecostalism have emerged as contraries to this local, intersubjective grief work. This article describes how such contrarian ideologies paper over existing global …

Sacred Approaches To Mental Health Issues, The University Of Maine College Of Liberal Arts And Sciences

Cultural Affairs Distinguished Lecture Series

The Judaic Studies Program at the University of Maine has invited Rabbi Richard Address, Founder and Director of www.jewishsacredaging.com to campus in October 2015 to deliver a presentation entitled "Sacred Approaches to Mental Health Issues." Using Jewish tradition as a starting point, this lecture offers ways of thinking about mental illness and examines how the sacred impacts our understanding and approaches to it. Specifically, the program will "explore the traditional definitions of a person dealing with mental illness, trace the diagnostic approach that tradition gives us and examine how the sources can inform us in dealing with current situations" (www.jewishsacredaging.com)

The Effects Of Social Anxiety And State Anxiety On Visual Attention: Testing The Vigilance–Avoidance Hypothesis, J. Suzanne Singh, Michelle C. Capozzoli, Michael Dodd, Debra Hope 2015 Hazelden Graduate School of Addiction Studies

The Effects Of Social Anxiety And State Anxiety On Visual Attention: Testing The Vigilance–Avoidance Hypothesis, J. Suzanne Singh, Michelle C. Capozzoli, Michael Dodd, Debra Hope

Faculty Publications, Department of Psychology

A growing theoretical and research literature suggests that trait and state social anxiety can predict attentional patterns in the presence of emotional stimuli. The current study adds to this literature by examining the effects of state anxiety on visual attention and testing the vigilance– avoidance hypothesis, using a method of continuous visual attentional assessment. Participants were 91 undergraduate college students with high or low trait fear of negative evaluation (FNE), a core aspect of social anxiety, who were randomly assigned to either a high or low state anxiety condition. Participants engaged in a free view task in which pairs of …

Incorporating Emotions As Antecedents And Mediators In Theory Of Reasoned Action (Tra) Model, Mobin Ul-Haque, Sarwar M. Azhar, Manqoosh Ur-Rehman 2014 University of Management & Technology, Pakistan

Incorporating Emotions As Antecedents And Mediators In Theory Of Reasoned Action (Tra) Model, Mobin Ul-Haque, Sarwar M. Azhar, Manqoosh Ur-Rehman

Business Review

Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) is widely used in different decision making situations. The TRA model measures behavioral intentions and predicts a certain behavior on the basis of these behavioral intentions. Literature has questioned the predictive ability of TRA model in terms of behavior prediction in a decision making situation as there are number of factors which may influence the decision making process. One of these factors is identified as “emotions” experienced during the decision making process. The paper makes an attempt to improve the TRA model by incorporating the emotions at two different points in the model i.e. emotions …
