Coats For The Csi Refugee Programs, Jason Forbush, Nick Mahan, Faith Johnson, Alisha Trejo, Sarah Moeller 2018 College of Southern Idaho

Coats For The Csi Refugee Programs, Jason Forbush, Nick Mahan, Faith Johnson, Alisha Trejo, Sarah Moeller

International Journal of Undergraduate Community Engagement

As group for a communications course at the College of Southern Idaho (CSI), we were a part of a service learning project. The project goal was to do a coat drive for the college refugee program. We wanted to help supply coats for those who perhaps don't have the means of buying coats for themselves or for their family. We got the word out by creating and posting flyers, and posting in the college newsletter. We set up donation boxes around the college. We were able to donate two giant Home Depot boxes of coats to the program.

Mind Mapping: An Experiential Approach To Syllabus Review, Elizabeth A. McCrea, Steven J. Lorenzet 2018 Seton Hall University

Mind Mapping: An Experiential Approach To Syllabus Review, Elizabeth A. Mccrea, Steven J. Lorenzet

Organization Management Journal

On the first day of class most management faculty review or “go over” the syllabus, typically through an instructor-led presentation. However, research indicates that students retain little, if any, of the syllabus material, leading to frustrating outcomes for both students and instructors. Here we report the results of a post hoc natural experiment, where we compared the effectiveness of the traditional, review-and-discuss method to the effectiveness of a mind map approach used in another undergraduate management course. Before we conceived of the natural experiment, each faculty member reviewed the syllabus using his or her preferred method. One week later, the …

A Multi-Theory Approach To Managing Knowledge Assets: The Case Of Complex Professional Human Service Organizations, Joel Harmon, Dennis J. Scotti, Eric H. Kessler 2018 Fairleigh Dickinson University

A Multi-Theory Approach To Managing Knowledge Assets: The Case Of Complex Professional Human Service Organizations, Joel Harmon, Dennis J. Scotti, Eric H. Kessler

Organization Management Journal

A multi-theory framework is offered for guiding managerial decision making in complex professional human service organizations; a growing segment of the economy for which the ability to proactively and dynamically manage knowledge assets is naturally critical to performance. Following a call for greater theoretical integration, this framework synthesizes essential and complimentary elements of three theoretical domains. It combines Transaction Economics’ focus on the appropriate procurement of knowledge assets, with Knowledge Management’s focus on how to dynamically unleash the potential of those assets, and Contingency Thinking’s focus on how to structurally harness and direct that potential. Two key “bridging constructs” emerge …

A Dyadic Approach To Examining The Emotional Intelligence–Work Outcome Relationship: The Mediating Role Of Lmx, Minsu Lee, Clifton O. Mayfield, Amanda S. Hinojosa, Yooshin Im 2018 Korea Military Academy

A Dyadic Approach To Examining The Emotional Intelligence–Work Outcome Relationship: The Mediating Role Of Lmx, Minsu Lee, Clifton O. Mayfield, Amanda S. Hinojosa, Yooshin Im

Organization Management Journal

Adopting a dyadic approach, we examine the processes through which leader–member exchange (LMX) mediates the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and work outcomes. Fitting the data from a survey of 204 unique pairs of leaders and followers to an actor–partner independence model (APIM), we found that follower EI positively affects LMX as perceived by both dyad members, whereas leader EI is positively related to only leader ratings of LMX. Using polynomial regression, we also found that EI similarity between the leader and follower has a positive relationship with both leader and follower ratings of LMX. Follower LMX partially mediates the …

Cultural Challenges When Memorializing Tragedies, Kjell Brataas 2018 Ministry of Transportation, Oslo Norway

Cultural Challenges When Memorializing Tragedies, Kjell Brataas

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

After a tragedy, victims and survivors often desire to memorialize what happened. This can take many forms, and finding the right way often involves a number of challenges. There will usually be differences of opinion among the bereaved, the injured and the uninjured survivors, and cultural aspects and differences play a major role. This presentation provides examples from around the world and hints on bridging the culture gap when memorializing a tragedy.

Building Bridges To Connect With Stakeholders: A Template For Success, Kimberly A. Reed 2018 Past President, International Food Information Council Foundation, and Nominee, First Vice President and Vice Chairman, Export-Import Bank of the United States

Building Bridges To Connect With Stakeholders: A Template For Success, Kimberly A. Reed

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

The modern age of communication, with the 24x7 news cycle and "information overload," can impact our ability to connect with stakeholders. Kimberly Reed, a Washington professional who has built bridges for more than 20 years both across the aisle and around the globe with non-profits, trade associations, government officials, and risk and crisis communication professionals, presented a case study on Expo Milano 2015: "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life" (the "World's Fair," which was the world's largest gathering and discussion on the topic of food). She shared best practices that featured Drs. Deanna and Tim Sellnow and provided practical resources …

Reputational Threats Online: Social Media As A Simultaneous Agent Of Crisis And Tool For Response And Resolution In The Case Study Of An American Academic Library, Margaret C. Stewart, Maria Atilano 2018 University of North Florida

Reputational Threats Online: Social Media As A Simultaneous Agent Of Crisis And Tool For Response And Resolution In The Case Study Of An American Academic Library, Margaret C. Stewart, Maria Atilano

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

This paper details a reputational threat to an American academic library where a viral social media post and associated negative comments misrepresented the institution and brand’s values. Immediately, the marketing librarian responsible for social media responded to the threat by engaging directly with the library consumers, sharing content and information with the broader online community, and reinforcing the library’s values and commitment to consumers. While the resolution to the crisis was mostly favourable, the event was unanticipated and invited a keen learning opportunity that is documented in this case study. Reflections and takeaways from this incident are discussed in the …

A Close Look At The Role Of Regulatory Fit In Consumers’ Responses To Unethical Firms, Kwansik Mun, Ilgi Shin 2018 University of Wisconsin-Madison

A Close Look At The Role Of Regulatory Fit In Consumers’ Responses To Unethical Firms, Kwansik Mun, Ilgi Shin

International Crisis and Risk Communication Conference

Our knowledge is not enough to clearly explain how consumers respond to unethical firms, thereby forming attitudes toward unethical firms’ brand and buying their products. In this sense, we conduct a one-way experimental design to test regulatory focus theory when it comes to attitudes toward unethical firms’ brand and the purchase intention. Our findings reveal that promotion-oriented participants were more negative toward Mitsubishi, which violates achievement (e.g. fuel efficiency), than prevention-oriented participants. More importantly, promotion-oriented people were less likely to buy Mitsubishi automobiles than prevention-oriented people. In contrast, prevention-oriented consumers are negative toward Volkswagen which violates protection (e.g. carbon dioxide …

A Content Analysis Of Jihadist Magazines: Theoretical Perspectives, Catalina M. Udani 2018 University of Central Florida

A Content Analysis Of Jihadist Magazines: Theoretical Perspectives, Catalina M. Udani

Honors Undergraduate Theses

During its violent spread across the Middle East, the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS) amassed both a local and international following in large part due to its usage of emergent media distribution. Beginning in 2014, ISIS’s Ministry of Media published an English-language magazine, Dabiq, disseminating its issues through online platforms. Dabiq and its successor Rumiyah both serve as propagandistic recruitment material for ISIS’s international community as well as broadcasting the message of the jihadist movement to ISIS’s enemies. This study analyzed ISIS’s publications using a qualitative content analysis in order to identify jihadist recruitment strategies through the perspectives …
